Geary County announcement:
Geary County Offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in commemoration of Juneteenth.
The Emancipation Proclamation, an edict issued by President Abraham Lincoln freeing the enslaved, went into effect January 1, 1863. The information did not reach all parts of the confederate south for over two years, until June 19, 1865, now commemorated as Juneteenth.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
