The Junction City Police Department is investigating multiple reports of tire slashing that have occurred over the past several days in the 200 to 400 blocks of West 5th and West 6th Streets, with additional reports received from other nearby areas. These incidents are believed to have taken place between Sunday, September 7, and the morning of Saturday, September 13.

Officers have responded to numerous calls regarding damaged vehicles and continue to gather evidence related to these cases. At this time, the investigation remains ongoing.

The Junction City Police Department encourages residents in the affected areas to:

• Inspect their vehicles for any signs of damage.

• Review any home or business security camera footage from the past week that may capture suspicious activity.

• Report any information related to these incidents to the Junction City Police Department at (785) 762-5912.

Series of tire slashings are under investigation

After a high-scoring game in 2024, this year's game, featuring the Junction City Blue Jays and Lawrence High Chesty Lions, was a defensive slugfest. Junction City scored late and won 14-7 in Lawrence on Friday night.

The Chesty Lions got the ball first and went three-and-out on the first possession of the game. Lawrence punted the ball away, and the Blue Jays took over. JC was moving the ball before fumbling near midfield. Despite the turnover, the Blue Jay defense forced another three-and-out. That was a common theme on Friday night. At the end of the first quarter, the game was still scoreless.

To begin the second quarter, the Blue Jays faced a fourth and goal from the eight-yard line. Senior quarterback Conrad Gomez dropped back to pass and floated the ball into the back of the endzone, and it was secured by senior Jamarcus Tyson for a touchdown. The ball was deflected by Lawrence, but great concentration and a great catch by Tyson gave the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead.

Following the Junction City scoring drive, Lawrence responded with their own touchdown drive and tied the game at 7-7. The Blue Jays were driving at the end of the half and ran out of time, and the game was tied at halftime.

The second half is when the defenses really cranked up their intensity. Junction City moved the ball offensively, but was denied on fourth down twice and also missed a 30-yard field goal from the right hash. Lawrence, on the other hand, struggled moving the ball, with the Blue Jay defensive line causing major trouble for the Chesty Lions.

With 3:53 to go in the game, the Blue Jays got the ball back after a nice punt return by senior Lovell Autry. Junction City had the ball in plus territory at the Lions' 45-yard line with the score still tied at 7-7. The Blue Jays received a big run by junior running back Aaron Woods down to the 32-yard line with under three minutes to go. Then, on a big third down, Gomez found junior wide receiver Brody Boeckman on the sideline, who caught the ball at the 20-yard line with 1:35 to go in the game. The very next play, Gomez hit Boeckman in the middle of the field, and Boeckman scored the go-ahead and game-winning touchdown with 1:25 to go in the game. The Blue Jays held on to win 14-7 and improve to 2-0 on the season.

Junction City High School head football coach Randall Zimmerman was pleased with his team pulling out the win in a tough road environment. “I am very, very proud of our guys,” Zimmerman said. “Our defense tonight was so good, and our offense moved the ball well; we just need to be better at finishing drives.“ Zimmerman also complimented his team for their toughness and battling through some adversity throughout the game.

Junction City is back at home next Friday night, hosting Wichita Northwest High School. As always, you can hear all Blue Jay games on 107.9 FM / 1420 AM KJCK Radio.

Blue Jays score late, Beat Lawrence in a defensive battle

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – &nbsp;Earlier this week the Junction City High School Blue Jay Band made its annual trek to perform at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. One problem, the weather didn’t cooperate.“It was quite an experience as it rained all morning in Hutchinson and shortly after the band arrived, they cancelled the rest of the performing bands that morning,” said Samantha Boxberger, JCHS music teacher.

After hearing the unfortunate news that they wouldn’t be able to perform, the Blue Jays adjusted and were hopeful that they would be able to perform with other bands later in the day once the weather passed. It never cleared up though, so Boxberger, Jared Morris and others allowed their musicians to make the most of an unfortunate situation by letting them attend the fair so that they could not only see all the fun exhibits and animals but also taste some of the amazing food.“Even though it rained the entire afternoon, our musicians had a great time bonding and exploring all that the fair had to offer,” said Boxberger.

With the rain coming down harder throughout the day, the Blue Jays decided to head back to Junction City early but were met with a surprise as all of the rain had made the grass parking lot at the fairgrounds an absolute mess.“All three of our charter busses got stuck so deep in the mud that we could not leave. Each bus tried to pull out a different direction, but no method worked. There were numerous phone calls for tow trucks, possible replacement busses and even tractors from the fairgrounds who tried to help get us free, but nothing worked. It honestly felt like watching a sitcom take place outside the bus window,” said Boxberger. After almost 2 hours, a second tractor was brought in and was finally able to pull all three of the busses out. Cheers from all three busses erupted as the Blue Jays were finally able to break lose and head back home after a long, but memorable day at the Kansas State Fair.

“Our musicians were great sports though, often cheering when they saw another bus trying to move and make any progress. Although they were disappointed to miss their first festival performance, they were able to bond with their fellow musicians and make some unforgettable memories,” said Boxberger.Finally, it’s only appropriate that the Blue Jays rock and pop halftime show this year is called, Storm Surge, as they definitely brought the Storm Surge with them on their adventure to Hutch.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The second report on the <a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-nursing/about/kansas-nursing-workforce-center.html">state of nursing in Kansas</a> was released by the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center, which is based at the University of Kansas School of Nursing.

The center formed in 2023 to address the shortage of nurses across the state. 

Compiled from 25 sources that include state and national databases and surveys, the report provides information on the supply and characteristics of nurses in Kansas.

“We look at the data through different vantage points. We look at the demographics of nurses: Who are they? How were they educated? How old are they? Where (in what setting) do they practice? We look at the data geographically: Where are they located?” said Barbara MacArthur, M.N., FAAN, director of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center and clinical associate professor at KU School of Nursing. “And we look at it in terms of access to care, because our mission is that wherever and whenever Kansans need care, they have access to it.”

The report helps hospitals, health care systems, long-term care facilities, nursing schools, government agencies and other stakeholders make informed decisions that increase and support the workforce in the state and ultimately improve the health of Kansans.

The first report, issued in September of 2024, provided a snapshot of the state of nursing in Kansas with one year of data from 2022. This second report is based on data covering 10 years, from 2015 to 2025.

The new report shows that the number of nurses in Kansas has declined since 2019, and the nursing workforce is aging — 22.1% of registered nurses (RNs) and 20.5% of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are 60 or older — with not enough younger nurses replacing them. And 25.9% of RNs and 23.4% of LPNs are planning to retire or leave the profession in the next five years. The report also notes that the population in Kansas is aging as well, and aging populations require more care.

Meanwhile, 85% of Kansas nurses are actively employed, which is lower than the national average. “If you look at nurses holding a license in Kansas, it doesn’t appear we have a crisis,” said Terry Siek, MSN, director of clinical services at the Kansas Hospital Association. “We need to be better at helping people see beyond that statistic to understand that we have quite a few nurses with a license that do not practice in Kansas, or do not practice at all.”

• The ratio of nurses to Kansans has not grown in the last 10 years, and the ratio of LPNs available to care for Kansans (currently, one LPN for every 322 Kansans) has decreased sharply. • Kansas has nursing care deserts, particularly in the western and southeast parts of the state. Five counties have fewer than 20 RNs and 41 counties have 20 or fewer LPNs. Five counties have no advanced practice nurses (APRNs), and 50 have fewer than 10 APRNs. • Kansas nurses work more jobs and longer hours. The percentage of Kansas RNs who hold two or more jobs rose from 15.7% in 2015 to 21.9% in 2024; during that period, the percentage who work more than 40 hours a week rose from 23.8% to 30.8%. • Wage gaps — between nurses who practice and those who teach — contribute to shortages of nursing faculty. These faculty are needed to train future nurses. • Multiple pathways are available to become a nurse. The report provides data on the different education levels that can lead to a career in nursing. Nearly 54% of RNs in Kansas began their career with a baccalaureate degree, 31% started with an associate degree and just 8% started their career as an LPN.

Making different pathways to a nursing career known to potential future nurses is part of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center’s work, MacArthur said. Earlier this year, the center received a $1 million grant from the Kansas Board of Regents to increase nursing school applications. In addition to creating a unified application for all schools that provide nursing education in the state, staff of the center plan to build a web-based tool for people interested in nursing education to show potential nursing students what the options are for a career in nursing.

“Nurses make a difference,” MacArthur said, noting that health outcomes are improved when there is a higher ratio of nurses for a population. “Kansans, wherever they are, need to have access to good nursing care.”

Report: 26% of Kansas nurses plan to leave profession in next 5 years

One of the most tragic days in American history, Sept. 11, 2001, was remembered during a memorial ceremony Thursday in Junction City. Geary County Sheriff Nate Boeckman told an audience gathered in front of the Municipal Building that the world had shifted. The World Trade Center Twin Towers and the Pentagon were the site of plane attacks and another plane was taken down in a Pennsylvania field. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives and thousands more were injured. "We saw the strength of our nation. We came together," said Boeckman. "We were above all else Americans."

First reponders were recognized for their service.

To local residents Boeckman also said, "We are Geary County. We stand for each other, we care for one another and when challenges come whether from afar or from close to home we meet them head on together."

The ceremony included the laying of a wreath, taps and a 21-gun salute.

The program printed for the event also included information about Geary County native William Otto "Bill" Caspar, who was killed at the World Trade Center. Caspar was a graduate of Saint Francis Xavier High School and Kansas State University.

Geary County Historical Society clarifies role of Endowment Fund

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State Athletics and Athletics Director Gene Taylor have announced a new annual fundraising effort, Fighting Ever Fighting, to position K-State Athletics in this new era of college athletics and enhance the world-class student-athlete experience through philanthropic giving via the Ahearn Fund, K-State's National Fund for Student-Athlete Excellence.&nbsp;

The recent court settlement in the House vs. NCAA&nbsp;class action lawsuit, which allows athletics departments to share revenues with student-athletes for use of their name, image, and likeness, signals a transformative era in college athletics. Beyond&nbsp;revenue sharing, the settlement will also provide new scholarship opportunities, as well as changes to roster limits.

This historic settlement will have a monumental impact on college athletics, leveling the NIL playing field by creating a new structure with a uniform spending cap across all Power 4 institutions.

“At K-State, we are committed to fully funding our opportunity to share revenues with our student-athletes across all of our sports,” Taylor said. “We will never take for granted what we have at K-State: a&nbsp;loyal fanbase, world-class facilities, and unwavering donor support that is the envy of other schools. Dr. Robert (Bob) Smith, former Fort Riley Museums Director, will join in person as the featured speaker. His presentation will spotlight veterans' connection with history. The memories of veterans and their descriptions of their service—through letters, oral histories and photos —provide historians with a vital window into the past. For a military historian, veterans’ recollections of history’s most significant, and often harrowing, events offer perspectives not found in the official military reports. Historians who write about such events find these stories and memories offer a “human face” to the dispassionate military reports and official documents used.

Smith was born in Nebraska and majored in history at the University of Nebraska. Growing up in a military family, he has always had a passion for military history. His father was a World War II veteran and career Air Force senior NCO. He returned to academia in 1998, earning his MA and Ph.D. at Kansas State University in 2004 and 2008, respectively. In 2011, Smith became Director of the Fort Riley Museum Complex, Fort Riley. He directed the complete remodel of both the U.S. Cavalry Museum and the 1st Infantry Division Museum before retiring in 2024. He teaches military history for the UFM Community Learning Center in partnership with the Kansas State University and the University of Kansas’ Osher Lifelong Learning Program. He has coauthored a book on the history of Fort Riley and is the author of numerous articles on military history.

Veterans' Connection with History

Fort Riley’s Education Services and Transition Assistance Program will host an Education and Job Fair Sept. 18 at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Avenue, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is free to attend and open to all active-duty Soldiers, family members, veterans, retirees, Department of Defense civilians, and community members.&nbsp;

The event will feature schools from around the United States, regional and local employers, KANSASWORKS, education counselors, financial aid advisors, Transition Assistance Program counselors and many other organizations. More than 75 exhibitors will be on site.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Education and Job Fair at Fort Riley 

Courtney Eichhorn was the guest speaker at the JC Breakfast Optimist Club meeting at the Hampton Inn in Junction City on Wednesday. Courtney is the new Associate Superintendent in USD 475 following the retirement of long-time educator and Associate Superintendent, Dr. Deb Gustafson.

Eichhorn came to this area after she and her husband, who was in the Army, requested Fort Riley. Courtney was originally from northeast Wisconsin, graduated from Northern Michigan University and received her master’s degree in special education/special education administration from Michigan State University. “School was my favorite place to be. I volunteer at Summer Camp for youth with Downs Syndrome and had an interest in school law. So, special education and law went well together”, she said.

Eichhorn also told the Optimist Club members that once she was hired in USD 475, she worked at Junction City Middle School and Junction High School for three years. She later worked as an Instructional Coach, Assistant Special Education Director and Director of School Improvement. During the 2024-25 school year Courtney was the Director of Special Education for Geary County Schools.

Courtney shared information about the challenges facing those who work in schools ranging from an increase in students with learning and behavior, concerns to recruiting and maintaining staff and the uncertainty about funding from the government. She said “the main thing is the main thing – we keep serving students that is what we do.”

USD 475 Associate Superintendent Spoke At The Optimist’s Meeting

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for an alleged violent assault in Manhattan.

Just after 5:30p.m. Tuesday, officers arrested&nbsp;83-year-old Allen Frazier of Manhattan in connection with the alleged crime. A 61-year-old woman, two 34-year-old men, a 53-year-old woman, a 30-year-old woman, a 36-year-old man and a 3-month-old boy were listed as victims. 

Frazier is being held on a $30,000 bond on requested charges of&nbsp; five counts of aggravated assault, one count of interference with a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated endangering of a child.

Manhattan man jailed for alleged violence against 5 adults, baby

CLAY COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 1p.m. Tuesday in Clay County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Freightliner semi driven by Dillon Ray&nbsp;Williams, 18, Clay Center, was&nbsp;westbound on Kansas 9 two miles east of Clifton. The vehicle drifted into the north ditch. The driver overcorrected and the semi entered the south ditch and struck an embankment.

EMS transported Williams and a passenger James Dean&nbsp;Jensen, 55, Morganville, to the Clay County Medical Center. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

There will be a 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony on Fort Riley&nbsp;Thursday.

The Army said that the ceremony will be on Sheridan Avenue at the Global War on Terrorism Memorial – a small replica of the World Trade Center Towers on a Pentagon-shaped base. It bears the names of 1s&nbsp; Infantry Division and Fort Riley Soldiers who gave their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq. The ceremonybegins at 10 a.m.

&nbsp;Col. Jerry Nunziato, Fort Riley Garrison Commander, will provide remarks. The 1st Infantry Division and first responders from area police and fire departments will be&nbsp;&nbsp;represented.

Those who perished on Sept. 11, 2001 will be remembered as well as the military men and women who gave their lives to the nation during the Global War on Terrorism. This event will also honor those who serve today in the military and as first responders in our communities.

August was slightly cooler than normal, in fact it was the coolest August since 2019, and it’s doubtful that anyone minded. Rainfall was slightly below normal, but not by very much.

The average daily high for August was 85.2, 2.8 degrees below normal. The average overnight low was 66.4 which was one tenth of a degree above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 75.8, 1.4 degrees below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 101 degrees on the 8th. This was the first occurrence this summer of a reading of 100 or higher, and with any luck, it’ll be the last as well! The last time the area saw a temperature of 100 or above was 348 days prior when it reached 103 on August 25, 2024. The lowest temperature for the month was 55 degrees on the 26th. That was the first low temperature below 60 that we had seen since the 54 degree reading the morning of June 11th. The daily high temperatures during August were uncommonly mild. The area only experienced highs of 90 or above on 6 days during the month. Over the past 30 years the average has been 14 days with 90 or above. Conversely, we had 8 days with highs below 80 degrees. The 30 year average is only 4 days (3.7 to be precise) with daily August highs below 80. There were no temperature records set or tied during August. The hottest August on record was in 2000 when we had a sweltering mean temperature of 85 degrees. The coldest August on record was in 1981 with a monthly mean temperature of 71.5. 1981 was the year of the earliest frost on record, September 17th. 

August rainfall was scattered throughout the month with appreciable rainfall occurring about every ten days. Long term average August rainfall is 4.55 inches. August 2025 came in just under that at 4.20 inches. Year to date we are running right at the long term average. Normal year to date precipitation through August is 25.65 inches and in 2025 we have had 25.88 inches. The wettest August on record was 2013 with 10.33 inches of rain. The driest August was in 1971 when no precipitation was recorded.

September brings the official start of autumn in the early afternoon of September 22nd. It also signals the cooler weather to come. Average daily high on September 1st is 85 and by the 30th we have dropped to 75. Overnight lows start the month around 64 and by the end of the month have dropped to 51. September also signals the move out of our “wet” season as we transition towards our much drier winter months. Long term average September rainfall is 2.85 inches and yes, that is all rainfall. Winter lovers have to wait until mid to late October for the first chance of snowflakes, slim as that chance may be. Long term average October snowfall is a mere one tenth of an inch!

The Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program Class of 2025-2026 recently&nbsp; spent a day learning about public safety in Geary County.
