For a second consecutive day, the Junction City Blue Jay and Lady Jay basketball teams were in action. Saturday’s games were in Dodge City.&nbsp;

After falling to Hays on Friday night, the Lady Jays got behind Dodge City early and never recovered losing 67-22.

It was another tough day shooting the ball for Junction City, and several turnovers once again plagued the Lady Jays. 

Despite youth and inexperience, JC had some flashes with freshman Isabel Pruit and sophomore Kiera Briley both playing hard on Saturday.  Pruit finished the game with seven points. Junior point guard Kalia Riley also had seven points for the Lady Jays. 

Next up for the Junction City girls is a game against Lawrence Free State on Tuesday night at Blue Jay Event Center. The tip-off for the varsity game will be at 6:00 p.m. It is the final game before Christmas break.&nbsp;

The Junction City Blue Jays boys basketball team picked up their third win of the season on Saturday afternoon beating Dodge City 81-49. 

The Blue Jays started scoring right from the tip and led 27-13 after the first quarter. The second quarter was much of the same for JC, who took a 49-23 lead into halftime.  The Red Demons outscored the Blue Jays 17-11 in the third quarter, but the Blue Jays exploded in the fourth quarter, and won by 32 points, with a final of 81-49. 

Several Junction City players were in double figures on Saturday. Senior guard Jackson Austin led the way with 25 points, point guard Lovell Autry scored 21, and senior Ja'Twaan Williams added 16 for the Blue Jays.

With the win, Junction City moves to 3-0 on the season. The Blue Jays will host St. Mary's on Wednesday night at Blue Jay Event Center for their final game before the Christmas break. The tip-off on Wednesday night will be at 7:30 p.m.&nbsp;

The purpose of the Allocations Panel is to provide guidance on how funding should be utilized from United Way of Junction City/Geary County. Panel volunteers will be assigned to a group, where they will review and interview 3-4 agencies, and then make their recommendations on funding. Time commitment is typically 4-5 hours, for panel volunteers. 

Each agency visit (in-person, or virtual) will include highlights, a financial/budget presentation, and a Q&amp;A session. After the panel has completed their assigned agencies, they will adjourn to the UW office to decide their funding recommendations.

Kansas State University Johnson Cancer Research Center

Thanks to awards from the&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/">Johnson Cancer Research Center</a>, 21 Kansas State University students will conduct hands-on cancer research in the spring 2025 semester.

The center's Cancer Research Awards will provide the selected students with hands-on laboratory research experience that emphasizes the importance of ethical research practices and effectively communicating science to the public.

"The Cancer Research Awards allow students to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, preparing them for success in their future careers," said Sherry Fleming, director of the Johnson Cancer Research Center. "These awardees represent some of the brightest minds at K-State and in Kansas, and we are confident they will excel in their chosen fields."

Each awardee receives $2,000 to support their research endeavors, enabling them to focus on laboratory work instead of non-academic employment. Additionally, $1,000 is allocated to each student for research supplies, enhancing their capacity to conduct impactful studies.

"The Cancer Research Award will help me explore my growing interest in research and veterinary medicine," said Ashley Najar, sophomore in animal sciences and industry,&nbsp;Shawnee. "I'm grateful to be working with Dr. Chieko Azuma and researching canine nasal tumors and the potential ways to reduce them. Through this research, I'll reach a better understanding of the disease and how it affects both canines and humans."

KSU announces Johnson Cancer Research Center awards

The Junction City Blue Jay and Lady Jays were in action on Friday night in Hays.&nbsp;

In the first game of the year for the Junction City girls' basketball team, Hays High jumped out to a quick lead over Junction City and the Lady Jays never recovered, losing 79-20 on Friday night.&nbsp;

Junction City was led in scoring by freshman Isabel Pruit, who had six points.&nbsp;

Senior Maiyaunss Harley scored all five points off free throws, and junior Morgan Nabus added five.&nbsp;

Out of the 20 points JC scored, 11 of the 20 came off free throws.&nbsp;

The Blue Jays opened the game on a three-pointer by senior Jackson Austin and never looked back. Junction City beat Hays 50-32.&nbsp;

After jumping out to a 10-point lead, Hays stormed back and cut the deficit to 22-19 at halftime.&nbsp;

The second half was a different story, as Junction City exploded out of halftime and went on a 15-0 run to start the second half. The Blue Jays outscored Hays 17-2 in the quarter and led 39-21 at the end of the third quarter. Junction City cruised to a 50-32 victory and improved to 2-0 on the season.&nbsp;

The Blue Jays were led in scoring by senior Jackson Austin with 15 points, and guard Lovell Autry with 13 points.&nbsp;

Next up for the boys and girls teams are games on Saturday afternoon in Dodge City. The girls play at 1:00 p.m., and the boys follow at 2:30.&nbsp;

United Way will accept funding application requests

The holiday season is full of cheer, but it can also bring hidden dangers for our beloved pets. From festive foods to holiday decorations, there's plenty to watch out for.

Susan Nelson, clinical professor at Kansas State University's Veterinary Health Center in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has some tips to keep pets safe.

"Many animal-related emergency room visits during the holidays are due to pets eating something inappropriate, whether intentionally given or by accident," Nelson said. "Some foods cause upset stomachs, some are poisonous and some can cause life-threatening obstructions."

Fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis. Ham, gravy, butter-laden potatoes and buttered veggies should be kept out of reach from pets. Skin and dark meat from turkey and fat trimmings from meat can be harmful to animals.

"Meat bones can cause life-threatening perforation of the GI tract," Nelson said. "Especially poultry bones, which tend to splinter when chewed. Several small pieces can also lead to GI obstruction. Tooth breakage from chewing on them is possible as well."

Pet owners should exercise caution when it comes to certain foods and beverages that can be harmful to animals. Items to avoid include chocolate, coffee and caffeinated drinks, as well as raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, salty snacks and foods seasoned with garlic or onion powder. Additionally, citrus plant stems, leaves, peels, fruits and seeds, along with dairy products, desserts or candies sweetened with xylitol, and alcoholic beverages, can pose serious health risks.

"Securing all food items behind a pet-proof door and making sure trash cans are secured can help keep pets safe," Nelson said. "Strings, foil wrappers, stainless steel scrub pads, skewers and other items smell like the food they were used on and are tempting for pets to ingest. These can lead to GI obstruction and/or perforations."

Food is not the only thing that could be harmful to pets this holiday season.

"Ingestion of holiday plants can cause anywhere from minor GI irritation to life-threatening toxicity," Nelson said. "Plants to keep out of reach include mistletoe, holly, amaryllis, balsam, pine and cedar. Certain water additives for Christmas trees can also be toxic to our pets. The ASPCA contains lists of more plants that are toxic, or not, to dogs and cats."

While certain holiday plants can cause varying levels of toxicity, the decorations and wrapping materials that fill our homes can also pose significant dangers if pets try to eat them.

"Homes are often decked for the holidays, with many decorations and wrapping items having the potential to cause harm if ingested," Nelson said. "These include items such as ribbons, tinsel, hooks, electrical cords, candles, oil lamps, potpourri, ornaments and wreaths."

Holiday festivities might be fun for us but can be stressful for pets.

"Pets that are anxious around strangers or crowds should be kept in a comfortable, quiet place away from the commotion with a favorite treat or toy," Nelson said. "Even if your pet likes company, they should still have access to a room or crate located in a quiet place where your guests won't bother them. For pets that become particularly stressed by company, speak to your veterinarian about prescribing them anxiolytics to decrease their anxiety until your company has left."

It is important to make sure pets have identification, like a collar with tags or a microchip, in case they should slip through the door and run away as guests enter and leave. Make sure microchips have the most up-to-date contact information.

If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, immediately call your veterinarian, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 for advice.

K-State vet offers holiday pet safety tips

Scammers love a good disguise. One day they show up texting you about a&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/sites/www.consumer.ftc.gov/files/fedex_phishing_text_social_media_graphic_01142021.png">delivery you missed</a>, the next they say you need to sort an&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/netflixscreenshot.jpg">issue with your Netflix account</a>. Here’s how to avoid these phishing scams.

<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams">Phishing emails and text messages</a>&nbsp;often tell a story to trick you into clicking on a link or opening an attachment. Maybe it’s an unexpected email or text message pretending to be from a company you know or trust, like a utility company asking you to make a payment. Or maybe it’s an unexpected party invitation that looks like it’s from a friend or family member.

Don’t click on links or download attachments in these messages. It might lead to a request for personal information, like your Social Security, credit card, or bank account number — and&nbsp;<a href="https://ftc.gov/idtheft">identity theft</a>. Or, the link or attachment could download harmful&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-remove-and-avoid-malware">malware</a>&nbsp;onto your device.

How can you spot these scams? If you get an email or text message that asks you to click on a link or open an attachment, ask yourself:&nbsp;Do I have an account with the company or know the person who contacted me?

If the answer is “No,”&nbsp;it’s likely a phishing scam. While real companies might communicate with you by email, legitimate companies won’t unexpectedly email or text with a link to update your payment or account information. Geary County Emergency Management said that there will be one more day of mostly sunny and cool weather before a system moves in bringing rain Friday and Saturday.  There could be a few hours late Friday morning and Friday afternoon when freezing drizzle develops. It may not last long but could still impact travel with icy spots on untreated roads, especially on bridges. Gusty winds will add a bit more chill as well on Friday

Geary County Emergency Management passes along information from the National Weather Service that said the best chance for rain comes on Friday with light freezing drizzle possible beginning Friday morning. 

Be prepared for road conditions being possibly slick.  Plan to allow extra travel time.  Expect a 30-60 percent chance of rain from west to east across the area. Temperatures warm gradually into this weekend reaching the 50s by Sunday.

A person could donate $25 a month, and that donation has the potential to help a young girl in Girl Scouts, it can help feed a family, provide safe shelter for a victim of abuse, an abused child receive an amazing advocate, a special needs athlete participate in their favorite sport, or even a safe place for a child to study and hang out with friends. MANHATTAN — Two Kansas State University students will receive special recognition at the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/">College of Business Administration</a>'s fall 2024 commencement ceremony and Senior Sendoff event.

The college's Outstanding Senior Award will be presented to Reese Kuzniakowski, bachelor's candidate in finance,&nbsp;Lee's Summit, Missouri, and the Resilient Senior Award will be presented to Marissa Cruz, bachelor's candidate in management,&nbsp;Junction City.&nbsp;Kuzniakowski is being recognized for outstanding academic performance and career development. In addition to being a top-performing finance major, his extensive work experience includes internships with leading financial institutions. He most recently served as an investment banking summer analyst at Goldman Sachs. Kuzniakowski also gained experience through roles including financial planning associate for StoryOne Family Office, private bank summer analyst at J.P. Morgan Chase and venture capital analyst intern with the University Venture Funds Crossroads. Kuzniakowski graduated from Lee's Summit West High School, and he's the son of Craig and Shauna Kuzniakowski.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Resilient Senior Award recognizes a business student who displayed resilience in the face of challenges. As the award winner, Cruz will have the honor of speaking at the senior breakfast before the commencement ceremonies. Cruz&nbsp;has been involved with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/scholar-programs/rise-up/">Rise Up Scholars Program</a>, a leadership and career success program designed for goal-oriented and inclusion-driven future leaders,&nbsp;since she transferred to K-State in 2022. She praised the program's&nbsp;support for diversity and said that having the resources to be successful in the business world has been amazing. By Ruthie GergeniDivision of Communications and MarketingMANHATTAN — Two Kansas State University students will receive special recognition at the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/">College of Business Administration</a>'s fall 2024 commencement ceremony and Senior Sendoff event.The college's Outstanding Senior Award will be presented to Reese Kuzniakowski, bachelor's candidate in finance,&nbsp;Lee's Summit, Missouri, and the Resilient Senior Award will be presented to Marissa Cruz, bachelor's candidate in management,&nbsp;Junction City.&nbsp;Kuzniakowski is being recognized for outstanding academic performance and career development. In addition to being a top-performing finance major, his extensive work experience includes internships with leading financial institutions. He most recently served as an investment banking summer analyst at Goldman Sachs. Kuzniakowski also gained experience through roles including financial planning associate for StoryOne Family Office, private bank summer analyst at J.P. Morgan Chase and venture capital analyst intern with the University Venture Funds Crossroads. Kuzniakowski graduated from Lee's Summit West High School, and he's the son of Craig and Shauna Kuzniakowski.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>

As the award winner, Cruz will have the honor of speaking at the senior breakfast before the commencement ceremonies. Cruz&nbsp;has been involved with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/scholar-programs/rise-up/">Rise Up Scholars Program</a>, a leadership and career success program designed for goal-oriented and inclusion-driven future leaders,&nbsp;since she transferred to K-State in 2022. She praised the program's&nbsp;support for diversity and said that having the resources to be successful in the business world has been amazing. Cruz&nbsp;has also interned with K-State&nbsp;Human Resources for almost two years. The daughter of Rodney C. Vicente and Carol A. Outstanding K-State seniors in business honored with awards

After years of planning and fundraising efforts aimed at creating a senior living campus in Junction City, Aging Well, a local non-profit organization, has made the difficult decision to disband. This decision follows a careful evaluation of multiple factors, including ongoing economic challenges and shifting community needs.

Aging Well was founded with the mission of promoting healthy aging and enhancing the well-being of seniors. Over the years, the organization made significant strides toward realizing its vision, thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners.

“We are deeply grateful for the tremendous support we’ve received from our community members, donors, and partners who helped us raise these essential funds,” said LaDonna Junghans and Duane Blythe, Co-chairs of the Aging Well Board of Directors. “Although it is with heavy hearts that we announce the dissolution of Aging Well, we are hopeful that our work will continue through the generous funds we are transferring to the Greater Geary Community Foundation.”

As part of the disbanding process, all remaining funds held by Aging Well will be donated to the Greater Geary Community Foundation, a respected local organization with a shared commitment to supporting community-based initiatives and enhancing the lives of residents. These funds will be used to support future projects and programs focused on serving Junction City and Geary County.

While Aging Well will no longer operate as an independent organization, the legacy of its work will live on, and the organization is thankful for the outpouring of support throughout its years of service.

Junction City High School junior, Abigail Paskow was recognized as the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s December Student of the Month. She is the daughter of Will and Kelly Paskow.

Abby is enrolled in the Science, Engineering and Health Academy at JCHS. She is involved in the JROTC program, Cross country, and track and is a member of the National Honor Society. Outside of school Abby is involved with the First Christian Church as a volunteer to help with the Kindergarten through fifth grade Sunday School program.

LTC (R) Richard Hodgson, Senior Adult Instructor, at JCHS stated that “Abby is well rounded and is a pleasure to work with in the JROTC program. She is an outstanding student and will most likely end the school year as the first or second highest academic performer.”

Abby’s father shared with the Optimists that “Abigail is a person of character who does the right thing. He and Kelly are truly blessed to have her as their daughter.”

Abigail stated that she plans to study construction management following graduation from JCHS. Her interest in carpentry and construction grew from working with her father on projects and being a student in the carpentry class at school.

The Optimist Club’s facilitator of the Junior Optimist International (JOI) Club at Junction City High School, Ricardo Gutierrez; JCHS Staff Representative, Dana Wiegand, and JOI Club members received nominations from high school teachers and made the selection of Abigail to be the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s December Student of the Month. Abby received a $25.00 gift certificate from JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill and a certificate from the JC Breakfast Optimist Club.

Abigail Paskow Is December Student of The Month

The holidays became a bit brighter this season for families stationed at&nbsp; Fort Riley. Employees at Smithfield Foods’ in junction City hosted their own employee toy drive and collected more than 150 toys and games to benefit children at Fort Riley.

“The true spirit of the holidays lies in giving back and making the season brighter for our neighbors,” said Paul McLeod, Junction City plant manager for Smithfield Foods. “Smithfield is honored to give back to the military families who selflessly serve our country every day.”

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement investigating a series of vehicle burglaries in Manhattan have made an arrest.

Over the past two weeks, Riley County Police Department has responded to over 25 reported vehicle burglaries, according to the department activity report.

On Tuesday, police arrested 19-year-old Alexander Darnell of Manhattan in connection with some of these incidents. 

Darnell was arrested requested charges of vehicle theft ($1,500-$25,000), interference with an LEO, possession of opiate/opium/narcotic/ or certain stimulant x 2, burglary- vehicle, and use/possess with the intent to use drug paraphernalia. 

 Total bond was set at $19,000. Darnell was confined at the time of this report.

Teen accused in some of the vehicle burglaries in Manhattan

RILEY COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just before 6:30p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

A Honda Civic, driven by Aaron Crews, 48, of Junction City, struck Subdint Cruz, 27, of Manhattan, and a minor child who were crossing the street at 4th and Moro Street, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported Cruz and the child to Via Christi by EMS for treatment of their injuries. Both were later transported on to other hospitals.
