Valley View Senior Life hosts an Easter Egg Hunt and Carnival

MANHATTAN, Kan. –&nbsp;It is time to resume lawn maintenance as spring weather arrives and grass begins to grow more quickly.

Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says proper maintenance is a proactive approach to reduce weed growth and other stresses to the lawn while minimizing costs and the environmental impact.

The optimal mowing height for a home lawn depends on the type of grass, lawn use and time of year, Domenghini said.

“Mow at the high end of the recommended range for each species to improve drought resistance by encouraging deeper roots,” Domenghini said. “Only one-third of the grass leaf should be cut at a time.”

Removing more by lowering the mowing height results in physiological stress and possible heat or cold injury. If the lawn has become overgrown and needs more than one-third removed it will need to be done gradually with a few days between each mowing.

“Mowing frequency should be based on the growth rate of the lawn,” Domenghini said. She suggests not following a set schedule that may result in excessive clippings left on the grass.

“Proper timing of mowing means the grass clippings are shorter and can be returned to the&nbsp;lawn,” Domenghini said. “This contributes nitrogen back to the lawn.”

Long clippings can block sunlight to the live turf and promote disease, so they should be bagged and removed.

Maintaining a sharp blade on the mower is essential for a clean cut, Domenghini added. She said a dull mower blade tears the grass and causes the tips to turn whitish.

“Mow using a different pattern each time to prevent soil compaction and turf wear from the mower wheels. The grass blades lean the direction of the mower’s path so changing the pattern each time allows the grass to stand more upright,” Domenghini said.

Trees can be severely damaged if bumped by the mower, she warned. Even what appears to be a minor wound can result in death for the tree, so she recommends cultivating the soil surrounding trees to prevent grass and weeds from growing up close to the trunk.

Apply water in the early morning, and wait as long as possible between watering, Domenghini said. Nighttime watering promotes disease development.

“Some signs indicating that the turf needs water include darker bluish-green color, and when footprints remain in the lawn when someone walks across rather than leaf blades bouncing back in place,” Domenghini said. “Soak the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and wait for signs that more water is needed.”

Fertilize only to maintain a moderately green color during favorable weather and minimally or not at all during times of weather stress, Domenghini said.

Over-fertilizing increases the water and mowing requirements. Domenghini suggests not fertilizing when heavy rain is expected, and never dump excess fertilizer into storm drains or sewers.

Junction City Commisssioner Al ( Alovence ) Gordon was in Geary County District Court Friday for a contested immunity motion hearing. Gordon and Corrieyonna Trice, who he had been in a relationship for nearly seven years, testified. Both face a misdemeanor charge of Domestic battery.

Authorities were called to their home on Jan. 23. Trice testified about a fight with Gordon revolving around hair clips that she had laid out to do her hair. The clips wound up in a shopping bag carried by Gordon with a dispute over who had initially possessed the clips.&nbsp; Trice claimed that during the argument&nbsp; Gordon grabbed her from behind and she was thrown on the floor, her shirt was ripped off and locks of her hair were pulled out. Supporting video evidence was submitted.

Trice claimed she did not hit Gordon in the face and didn't brandish a knife at him. Law enforcement testimony confirmed that her shirt had been ripped off and a back portion of her hair had been pulled out.&nbsp;

Prosecutor Krista Blaisdell argued Gordon was angry because Trice wanted her hair clips back. She urged that a defense motion for immunity by Gordon be denied. The court took the case under advisement and plans to to issue a written decision at a future time. Gordon has maintained his innocence during the case.

A May 5 status hearing and arraignment date has been scheduled for the defendant Gordon, and a May 19 status hearing for Trice.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating an alleged assault in Manhattan.

Just before 8:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of aggravated assault in the 700 block of Colorado Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.. &nbsp;

A 31-year-old man reported that a 41-year-old man armed himself with a sledge hammer during an incident, placing the victim in fear of harm.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. The annual Earth Day clean up called "Operation Clean Sweep" will be held tomorrow, Saturday, April 12 in Junction City.

The Junction City Police Department is looking for volunteers for the cleanup.&nbsp;If you wish to volunteer, contact Cindy Sinklier at the police department. Her email is&nbsp;cindy.sinklier@jcks.com.

The Geary County Rural&nbsp; Fire Department assisted Fort Riley Fire at a large fire on the ranges north of Junction City Thursday afternoon.  Several of Ft. Riley's fire units were busy at a fire on the east side of Post.

Geary County responded with three brush units,  two heavy brush units, one water tanker, and two supervisor units and worked alongside the Ft. Riley units.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Each month during the school year, the JC Breakfast Optimist Club honors a Junction City High School Student of the Month. Students are nominated by the high school staff, selected by the Junior Optimist Club and honored by the adult club. JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill provides a $25.00 gift certificate and the club presents the student with a framed certificate.

Rocio Casco-Martinez was honored as the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Junction City High School Student of the Month. Lyn Green, English Learners teacher at JCHS stated that “when Rocio was in the 8th grade, she and her family moved to the United States from Honduras. She devoted herself to reading, writing, speaking and listening in the English language, while continuing to grow in her first language of Spanish. In only a few short years Rocio scored proficient on the Kansas English Language Proficiency Assessment (KELPA) and exited the EL program at the high school.

During this school year, Rocio was sked to join the Student to Student (S2S) Advisory at JCHS. She helps welcome all 10-12 new students who enroll in and attend the school. She gives school tours, meets with teachers, eats lunch with new students, answers questions, and is an ambassador for the school.

Rocio is a Teacher’s Assistant and helps students who need Spanish to English translation every day. She also assists students with pronunciation and vocabulary development in both English and Spanish, encourages confidence in other students. She is also a manager for the Girl’s Soccer Team, a member of the Nation Honor Society and HOSA, a group for future health professionals.

After graduation, Rocio hopes to attend college, followed by medical school to become a surgeon.”

&nbsp; The 151st Kentucky Derby is rapidly approaching, with the Fort Riley Mounted Color Guard making its first appearance May 3rd.

According to a Fort Riley release Soldiers and military working equines of Fort Riley’s 1st Infantry Divisision will have the distinct honor of presenting the nation’s colors at both the 151st Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. The former race is run on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby. The Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard has been training rigorously to prepare for these events.

The unit’s horses are conditioned to remain calm in high-energy environments through a unique training regimen. Their fellow warriors at Fort Riley play a role in this process, conducting desensitization drills that include physical training sessions on Custer Hill, where units work together to acclimate the horses to loud crowds and movement. Additionally, the unit collaborates with Big Red One aviation units, coordinating flyovers to ensure the horses remain steady under the roar of passing aircraft.&nbsp;These horses serve as living symbols of the division’s history, pride, and unwavering commitment to duty.

&nbsp;Officers from the Junction City Police Department and Geary County Sheriff’s Office executed search warrants at residences located on the 1100 block of Haven Drive and the 2200 block of Thompson Drive at approximately 5:30 PM Wednesday.&nbsp; The JCPD said these warrants were the culmination of a several-month-long narcotics investigation.

During the execution of the search warrants, officers seized approximately 1.25 pounds of methamphetamine, as well as quantities of cocaine, marijuana, fentanyl, approximately $17,000 in U.S. currency, and three firearms. One of the firearms recovered had been reported stolen.

Mashaun J. Baker, a 39-year-old man from Junction City, was arrested as a direct result of this investigation. Baker faces charges including distribution of certain stimulants, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, taxation; drugs (no drug tax stamp for marijuana or controlled substances), unlawful acquisition of proceeds from drug transactions, and possession of stolen property

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

On April 3, police arrested Victor Fuentes Jr, 20, of California was arrested for his Riley County warrant for two counts of attempted murder in the 1st degree, Aggravated Robbery, aggravated endangering a child, contributing to child misconduct, three counts of criminal damage to property, and criminal discharge of a firearm in connection with the crime. He remains jailed on a $750,000.00 bond.

Also on April 3, Delron Tyree, 17, of Topeka, was arrested for his Riley County warrant for 2 counts of attempted murder in the 1st degree, three counts of criminal damage to property, criminal use of a weapon, and criminal discharge of a firearm in connection with the crime. Tyree is being held without bond.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library Foundation’s Trivia Night has been rescheduled from April 12 to June 21.&nbsp;&nbsp;It will still be held at Spin City, 915 South Washington, and begin at 6:00 p.m.&nbsp;

Library Foundation Trivia Night Rescheduled

MANHATTAN — On Kansas State University's inaugural Day of Giving, Wildcats across the world shared their pride for academic programs, student success and innovative research. More than 1,600 donors invested $3.4 million in areas across the institution, supporting students, faculty research and college initiatives.

K-State Day of Giving, a 24-hour giving challenge,&nbsp; invited the Wildcat nation to unite and share their love for the university, displaying that when Wildcats come together, we can do good for Kansas and the world.

"The tremendous outpouring of generosity we witnessed during our K-State Day of Giving reaffirms what I've always known about our university community — when called upon, our alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students respond with extraordinary heart and commitment," said President Richard Linton. "Every gift represents a personal investment in our shared future and a profound belief in our mission."

Throughout the day, K-Staters supported areas they were most passionate about. Student groups, including the Concrete Canoe team, the K-State Rodeo team and the Wildcat Rocketry team, received donations empowering student engagement and learning beyond the classroom. The Global Impact in Sorghum initiative, which conducts research to improve sorghum production techniques and introduce improved seed, saw support for its mission and used social media to share its impact with audiences. The College of Business Administration rallied funds for applied learning experiences that prepare students for careers. Other significant gifts went to All Faiths Chapel and Cats' Cupboard, a vital resource for enhancing food security at K-State.

Departments across campus competed for bonus funds through various leaderboards and challenges. The College of Business Administration led the way in total dollars raised, bringing in more than $1 million, while the Cats' Cupboard engaged the most donors to secure the top spot in the participation leaderboard with 203 donors.

There will be 20,000 Easter Eggs on the lawn at Valley View Senior Life in Junction City on Saturday morning. 

Their annual Easter Egg Hunt &amp; Carnival is scheduled from 10 a.m. until noon.&nbsp;The morning will be filled with fun, including bounce houses, carnival games, face painting and an egg hunt featuring 20,000 eggs.&nbsp;

The event is open to the public and is free for children ages infant to 12. There will be grand prize winners in each age group. They include ages 0-3, 4-7, and 8-12.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Victory Clinic hosts Business After Hours in Manhattan

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. -&nbsp;The Kansas State Department of Education announced on Wednesday that 19 Junction City High School seniors have been named 2025 Kansas Career and Technical Education Scholars.In all, the Blue Jays had 12 seniors named CTE Scholars in Health Science, five in Comprehensive Agriculture Science and one in Engineering and Applied Mathematics, as well as&nbsp;Corrections, Security, Law and Law Enforcement Services. 

Overall, 200 Kansas high school seniors earned recognition throughout the state.&nbsp;The Kansas CTE Scholar program is an opportunity to recognize well-rounded, outstanding CTE students who are finishing their senior year of high school in 2025.&nbsp;The first Kansas CTE Scholars were named in 2017. The 2025 class was announced during the Kansas State Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 8, in Topeka. All CTE scholars will receive a commemorative pin, a special certificate, a graduation honor cord and statewide recognition.

 </figure>By Matt HooverUSD 475 Communications CoordinatorJUNCTION CITY, Kan. -&nbsp;The Kansas State Department of Education announced on Wednesday that 19 Junction City High School seniors have been named 2025 Kansas Career and Technical Education Scholars.In all, the Blue Jays had 12 seniors named CTE Scholars in Health Science, five in Comprehensive Agriculture Science and one in Engineering and Applied Mathematics, as well as&nbsp;Corrections, Security, Law and Law Enforcement Services. Overall, 200 Kansas high school seniors earned recognition throughout the state.&nbsp;The Kansas CTE Scholar program is an opportunity to recognize well-rounded, outstanding CTE students who are finishing their senior year of high school in 2025.&nbsp;The first Kansas CTE Scholars were named in 2017. The 2025 class was announced during the Kansas State Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 8, in Topeka. Junction City High School CTE Honored By KSDE

Geary County Public Works would like to remind the public that this Saturday, April 12th, is the second Saturday of the month, and the following areas will be open: 

Geary County HHW/Recycling Center: 8 AM to 2 PM. 

As a friendly reminder, HHW will take items such as paint, household cleaners, batteries &amp; small appliances to safely dispose of. This program is free of charge to Geary County residents and Geary County Property Owners. 

The Landfill accepts brush &amp; tree limbs only. No other items are accepted. Residential use of this area is free of charge for Geary County residents. Commercial businesses must weigh their load &amp; pay at the Geary County Transfer Station. 

The Geary County Transfer Station is open every Saturday from 8 AM – 2 PM.

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS — The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center has received a $1 million grant from the Kansas Board of Regents to support their efforts to address the shortage of nursing students and nurses throughout the state.

The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center, based at the University of Kansas School of Nursing, is engaged in several projects designed to increase interest in nursing and boost applications to nursing schools throughout the state. The grant also will fund a comprehensive report analyzing the relationship between the nursing shortage in the state and its educational programs, providing insight into best practices and barriers for increasing nursing school applications, enrollments and licensing pass rates.

“The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center is so grateful for the support from the Board of Regents,” said Barbara MacArthur, MN, FAAN, director of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center and a member of the faculty at KU School of Nursing. 

“By collecting data on nursing issues throughout the state, the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center has learned about the issues facing potential students as well as nurses at any stage in their career," she said. "The Kansas Nursing Pathways Project aims to increase applicants to pre-licensure nursing education programs, which is at the core of growing the nursing workforce.”

Enrollment in Kansas nursing education programs has steadily declined by 38% over the last 10 years. Additionally, a significant number of registered nurses and licensed practical nurses plan to retire in the next five years. Rural hospitals in the state are particularly vulnerable and could face closure.

“The mission of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center aligns perfectly with the regents’ strategic plan for our state’s public higher education system,” said Blake Flanders, Ph.D., Kansas Board of Regents president and chief executive officer. “It will ensure that that our system is meeting a critical need in our state by developing a robust nursing talent pipeline and helping nurses deliver the best possible care.”

“A persistent shortage of nurses means that Kansas patients are at risk of not getting the care they need,” MacArthur said. “Potential nursing students struggle to see an educational pathway that fits their needs, and they often spend time and money filling out multiple applications. Nursing education programs have unfilled seats, and employers struggle to find nurses.”

KU School of Nursing will continue to support and house the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center throughout this initiative.

The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center was established at KU School of Nursing in August 2023 and is one of 46 in the nation focused on solving the nursing shortage issue. It is focused on using data and collaboration to address the nursing workforce shortage throughout the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;
