Black History Month is observed in Geary County

Geary County Convention & Visitors Bureau has compiled a list of Black History Month activities in the community.

In Geary County, there are going to be many events taking place throughout the month. From a 5k run to a Poetry and Spoken Word Social, there will be many things to choose from. The events are to honor Black History and bring the community together.

Black History Month Celebration Poetry & Spoken Word Social

Details: Although Valentine’s Day is around the corner, come out and share the love at the poetry slam. What better way to relax from a hard day of work and celebrate Black History Month than to vibe out while listening to music, sharing a little comedy with the host, and listening to poetry from local talents?

Although this will be an open mic event, all patrons must have a ticket in advance to enter (those with a free ticket will be added to the program in advance. Tickets will not be sold at the door. The entry fee for general admission (non-performers) will go to the cost associated with this event in conjunction with the beneficiate.

The best performer of the night will win the "Golden Trophy".

Benefit: A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to NAACPLDF organization.

D.S. Black History Month Run

Sat Feb. 12 - Sat Feb. 19

Buffalo Soldier Park

1832 N. Adams, Junction City

The first Black History Month Run, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2021. The race will start and finish at the Buffalo Soldier Park, Junction City, KS 66441. The course will be a flat and fast course. Participants running the 5k will receive a race shirt, finishers medal, post-event snacks and refreshments and more.

Paid registrants before 2/1/2022 and you will be guaranteed a race shirt, custom bib, official time, sweetheart box, and finishers medal. Free registrants will receive a custom bib, sweetheart box, and official time. Registration ends February 11th.

This run is partially supporting The Respect Runners Association scholarship fund.

Community Book Conversation February 15th, 6-7 pm Dorothy Bramlage Public Library, 230 W 7th St, Junction City

Details: Join the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library for a community conversation regarding the book Just Mercy registration is required. Summary: After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving his innocence. In the years that follow, Stevenson encounters racism and legal political maneuverings as he tirelessly fights for McMillian’s life. Registration required 785-238-4311

STEAM Saturday- Black History Monthly Celebration of African American Inventors Geary County Historical Museum February 19th, 1-4 pm Geary County Historical Museum 530 N Adams St, Junction City

Details: The first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) will take place on Saturday, February 19th from 1-4. What better way to celebrate, than honoring Black History Month and African American Inventors?
