Courage Awards are being given to five local authors

Coretta Scott-King Courage Awards were announced at the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in Junction City Monday. They were presented to five local authors.

Daphne Maxwell, who coordinated the event, said they are being presented to Unique Hiram, LaFarris Risby, Crystal Davis, Viranda Slappy and the late Karen Scroggins.

Hiram is a number one Amazon bestselling author and book coach. Notable works include: Finally, Persistence and Queen of Wilmette. Risby is an award-winning business strategist, author, childcare and parenting expert, while Davis, who has authored three books, is characterized by friends and colleagues as one of the most insightful Servant Leaders in business today.

Slappy has authored books ranging from "Generation Impact to Til Death Do Us Part and has received a myriad of awards and recognition for both personal and professional service. Scroggins published three books including one on her family history, one on Black Academy in Kansas and another on the Kansas Underground Railroad. She was an advocate for battered women and was passionate in community service, her sorority and her church.

Martin Luther King Jr. created books and literature where people can learn about the life, struggle and triumphs in King's life.
