With the assistance of a $136,365 contribution from the Cooper-Newell Foundation, patrons of the Wakefield Museum have reached their fundraising goal of $535,000 for a new addition to the museum. Groundbreaking will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at 604th Street in Wakefield.
The museum was a dream of Annetta ( Myers ) Hayes, who belonged to the Wakefield Library Club. Other founders of the museum included Evelyn Hawes, Gertrude Marshall, Dee Lumb, Betty Herman, Thelma Brougher and Marion Mason. The first wing opened in 1973, the Burner Addition in 1980 and the Rau Addition in 1990.
According to Museum Board member Trudy Zurmely, during the last 20 years the museum has received so many historical items that they are out of room to display them.
Members of the Expansion Committee include Trudy Zurmely, Michael Zurmely, Kathy Yarrow, Kathy Tremont, Marilyn Sherbert, Joy Shandy, Jolene Hammond and Sharon Babst.
