Geary USD 475 will move back the starting date for school to Aug. 31 from the originally planned date of Aug. 17. As a result of that change there will be some date changes for Stuff the Bus and Adopt-A-Backpack programs where school supplies are collected for children in the district.
Nichole Mahder of United Way said the application deadline for Adopt-A-Backpack is now Aug. 7. Backpacks need to be returned by Aug. 14, families would be scheduled the week of the 17th for pick-up, and Stuff the Bus supplies will continue to be collected until Aug. 21.
The plan is to allow families more time to apply and the community more time to adopt and shop.
