Discussion about the possibility of raising the Transient Guest Tax in Geary County has been receiving attention this week. As of now there are not any formal proposals and no final action.
The Transient Guest Tax is paid by people using lodging facilities. The current rate in the county totals 6%.
According to Convention & Visitors Bureau Director Donna Price, a one cent increase was initially discussed at the county commission meeting with the funds to be used to support upgrades to facilities hosting sporting events. Possible examples could include soccer fields or tennis courts. Price suggested splitting that one percent in half to fund both facility upgrades and the CVB.
The matter was then taken to the CVB Advisory Committee, who suggested an overall two percent increase. Half of the money, or one percent, would be used to improve the sports facilities and half for the CVB.
The issue will now go back to the county commission for discussion.
