
CLAY COUNTY—The driver accused in a fatal DUI crash that occurred just after 7a.m. Thursday in Clay County has been moved from the hospital to jail.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1998 Chevy Silverado driven by Jacob Tyler Zelinski, 27, Beloit, was was eastbound on U.S. 24 one mile east of Clay Center.
The pickup crossed the westbound lane, entered the north ditch and struck a 2001 Buick Park Avenue driven by Dale Hammond, 82, Clay Center, who was northbound on a driveway just North of U.S. 24.
Hammond was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the collision Zelinski fled the scene on foot. He was located and placed under arrest a short time later and transported to the Clay County Hospital.
He is being held on requested charges that include Involuntary Manslaughter, Fail to stop at crash resulting in death, DUI, Expired registration, Fail to maintain a lane and Failure to wear seatbelt, according to the KHP.
