Girls in 1st grade through 8th grade had an opportunity to learn the basic skills and fundamentals of basketball during the Lady Jay Jam summer basketball camp at Junction City High School this past week. JCHS girls basketball coach Tim Testa coordinated the effort. "Obviously early in the week we were very rudimentary with what we were doing. As we got farther and farther into the camp some of the girls were two-ball dribbling, some of the girls were passing with two basketballs at a time."
Techniques including how to move offensively received attention and there were opportunities to play games and participate in other fun activities. "I think we made a ton of progress in just five days." The kids also had an opportunity to watch movies on the video board in the main gym, and Play JC provided pizza.
The camp was part of the effort to help prepare girls for basketball at the middle school and high school level. Each night there were about 35 girls who participated. High school girls also helped with the camp.
The plan is to continue this type of summer basketball activity in future years.
