Karen Mae Bauernfeind, age 77, of Manhattan, KS, passed away at home on May 16, 2024.

Karen was born May 12, 1947, in Plymouth, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Mietje (Van Sluys) Becker and David C. Becker. Karen graduated from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee in January, 1964. Karen attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and then the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point from where she graduated as an Art Major in 1967.

Karen and Robert J. Bauernfeind were joined in marriage October 10, 1970. They resided in Madison, Wisconsin, from 1970 through April 1978. They moved to Hutchinson Kansas, KS in May 1978 and later to Manhattan, KS in April 1993.

Karen is survived by her husband, Bob, of 57 years (at home); daughter Erin Lin/son-in-law Xiao-Min/grandson Jaylen (14) and granddaughter Rowyn (11) of Naperville, IL; daughter Deven/son-in-law Andrew Miller/granddaughter Kaia (13) of Kansas City, MO.

Karen was the “glue” that kept us up and running. She had many joys during her lifetime. Karen was employed in various positions supporting her husband through his extended college years/studies. Karen guided Erin and Deven through their formative/school years. She dearly loved her “sons” and grandchildren.

Karen enjoyed her travels: Overseas ---- China, Europe, and Hawaii. And numerous ventures to states/sites with Bob and daughters’ families. There were many special Holiday gatherings at home, in Naperville and Kansas City, as well as “hang-out times” with back-and-forth general visits.

Karen had an avid passion for needlework projects ----- crocheting being one of her favorites. Her many uniquely designed quilts grace many individuals in their homes as do other needlework projects. Karen was an avid reader of novels and other written media. She had her favorite TV programs as well as other shows on different streaming services.

She loved others, and others loved and will miss Karen.

Karen’s wishes were to be cremated. No services will be held.

The Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
