Gerald Laudermilk

Dan Laverne Ward of Clay Center, KS died on Monday, March 20, 2023, 
in Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands, TX. He was 93 years old. 


He was born to Lester and Crystal Ward on July 26, 1929. He was raised 
and attended public schools in Clay Center, along with his brother Don 
and sisters Lynette and Carol. He graduated from the University of 
Kansas and served in the US Air Force as a pilot.

He married Jerrie Moore and had two children, Keith and Cathy Ward. 
He divorced and re-married Sylvia (Wooster) Burkart. He adopted her four
 children, Rosalind (Ward) Palumbo, Ronnie, Rena (Ward) Thames and 
Randy. Together, they also had two children of their own, Dan, Jr and 
Tamara (Ward) Dermody. He divorced Sylva and remarried Elizabeth 
(Englund) Ward. 

They lived in San Antonio and Clay Center, but 
eventually found their way to Blanco, Tx where they lived for 40 years. 
He worked in retail selling carpeting, draperies and furniture. He also 
owned his own lumber yard in Clay Center and later a carpet and drapery 
store in Johnson City, TX.&nbsp; His sense of humor and pranking style was 
enjoyed (or tolerated) by all that knew him. He will be greatly missed.

He has 14 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 10 AM on Friday, April 7, 2023, in Greenwood Cemetery.

Darrell Lee Clauson, 65, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at his home in Wamego.

Born June 5, 1957, in Raymondville, Texas, Darrell was the son of 
Donald and Kathrine L. (Roberts) Clauson.&nbsp; He married Charlyn White on 
September 3, 1983, in Lubbock, Texas.&nbsp; She survives.

The family will meet with friends at a memorial visitation on Sunday 
afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in 
Wamgeo.

Inurnment with Military Honors will be at a later date in the Roby Cemetery, Roby, Texas.

Rosie Wenzl Klozenbucher, gentle soul, 
good neighbor, and an endlessly patient mother and grandmother from 
Greenleaf, died Feb. 3 at the Linn Community Care Home. She was 88.&nbsp;

She was born Rosemary Frances Fiegener, in Clay Center in 1934, to 
parents scratching out life in the Depression.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were getting 
divorced, and her mother Rose was mortally ill but did not know it; Rose
 died when Rosemary was two.&nbsp;A visitor to the house had found Rose 
unconscious on the floor and Rosemary crawling happily around her.

Her father Pete was a poor, shy man who lavished love on Rosemary 
until he got drafted into the U.S. Army. He was killed during the 1944 
battle for the German city of Aachen.

Rosemary, nine years old, refused to believe he was dead; this was a 
fib, she told herself -- told in a family that nurtured grievances and 
fibs. She didn’t cry until three years later when Pete’s coffin came 
home.

After he was drafted, Rosemary would use either a stump or a wooden 
fence rail to climb barefooted and bareback onto Tony, a gentle horse 
kept at the Fiegener family ranch. She was all of five or six years old 
when she first rode Tony. She had two loves, Dad and Tony. And on Tony’s
 back she would trot through the Flint Hills of Pottawatomie County, 
Kansas, with Tony, wildflowers, birdsong and pollinating bees as 
companions. When she fell off, which was frequently, Tony would stand 
still as a gatepost, then find a stump for her climb.

But then Pete died, the family lost the ranch, and Rosemary lost 
Tony. Her three never-married aunts took on her care. They’d grown up in
 a family unfamiliar with affection. They didn’t dislike her; they fed, 
clothed and ignored her.&nbsp;“I might as well have been wallpaper,” she told
 us later. “Or a chair.”

When she reached high school age, the aunts sent her to Mount St. 
Scholastica, the Catholic girls boarding school in Atchison, where 
Rosemary knew no one. She studied mostly alone, never went out, kept a 
little unplanted seed of love close to her heart, pollinated by hope but
 not yet planted. And because it was a girls school, no boys noticed 
that shy little Rosemary Fiegener was drop-dead gorgeous -- dark hair, 
thoughtful dark eyes. And that she radiated kindness.

Her seed, her plan for sowing love, was simple in design, as she told
 us: “It was that if I was ever lucky enough to find love and kids, that
 they would get all that I never got: Hugs, attention, love, attention, 
toys, attention.”&nbsp; &nbsp;

And by and by, a handsome farmer came along, to help his sister move 
into the dorm on the first day of school. He did a double-take in the 
hall when he saw Rosemary. “Oh, WOW,” he said. &nbsp;

“Be nice,” his sister said. “She’s the nicest.”

Gene Wenzl dropped his sister Joan’s bags and patrolled the halls until he found Rosemary.&nbsp;

Gene was a talkative, bright guy who farmed and played trumpet in 
rural dance bands. He sang all the time at work, liked jokes and telling
 stories. He called her Rosie, because he liked nicknames, and she liked
 the name because it made her sound fun, and because it bothered her 
aunts, and so for the rest of her life she was Rosie to many and 
Rosemary to a few.

Rosie told her aunts she would marry Gene. Her aunts told her she 
would do no such thing because they planned to have Rosemary keep house 
for their family, as they had done, loveless and childless.

And for the first time ever, Rosie declared out loud that she would do as she darn well pleased. 

Gene’s parents showered her with love and attention, which startled 
her at first. And soon after she married him in 1954, she and Gene made 
one baby, and then another, and eventually five boys in only nine years.

He sang while he plowed fields; he played trumpet. She showered her 
boys with attention, not just love but attention in the finest of 
details.

She read to her sons every night for many years, no matter how tired,
 or how annoying the little boys. She brought plastic alphabet letters 
home when Roy, the eldest, was six, so he could read by the time he 
started school. Tom set multiple fires; she put them out. She read and 
read and read stories, while Gene told them stories from history. The 
little boys became entranced by books and so went off to make adventures
 of their own. None of them became lawyers or Hollywood celebrities but 
they all became adrenaline junkies – cops, newspaper reporters, 
paramedics, EMTs, foster parents, mountain climbers, foreign exchange student sponsors, nurses.

Rosie got this started while also doing laundry and cooking and 
gardening and burping babies and helping with homework and running them 
to church, Catechism classes and school, rubbing their backs and putting
 wet washcloths on little faces when they had fevers. She hired a 
babysitter, Pat Lewis, who became a daughter-friend. And when 
girlfriends Sheryl and Sandy and Judy and Carol and Missy showed up, 
they became daughters before they married her sons, and Rosie gave them 
attention and hugs, affection and attention, kindnesses and attention.

Rosie led the Red Cross recovery program after a 1973 tornado 
destroyed much of Greenleaf. She stayed with her church’s Altar Society 
for decades.

Gene died early (1981 at age 50), leaving her with one son still at 
home and a farm on the edge of dissolution. She kept the farm in the 
family, and the sons came to keep it going.&nbsp; 

Rosie took EMT training and spent many years crewing ambulances to 
scenes of accidents, injuries and illnesses. And at the end of her 
aunts’ lives, when they got lost in the house of mirrors of dementia, 
she showered them with attention and love and all the things they had 
not been able to give to her long before. But when in their house she 
found letters her father had written home from the war -- letters her 
aunts had hidden from her -- she cried.

She married Kimeo farmer Ed Klozenbucher in 1986; they spent 27 years
 together until his death in 2013. Gene had loved her dearly but was an 
edgy and impatient spouse; Ed treated her as a princess, as a gift, and 
she who lacked love early in life now cherished that love.

Sixteen grandchildren came, and they and their spouses showered love 
and affection and photos and attention on her. That little seed of love,
 nurtured in her early secret solitude, had grown her a garden of 
happiness. The grands gave her 22 great-grandchildren (so far), and she 
put photos of the grands and great-grands on her walls where she could 
look at them every hour of the day. 

In the nursing home she was hands-down the staff’s choice as the 
nicest and sweetest resident.&nbsp;Grandson Gene was with her when she 
passed.

Her last words were, (to Larry): “I’m so glad you’re here.”

She was preceded in death by her son, Gary.

She leaves her sons, Rich (wife Judy), Almena, Kan.; Tom (Carol), 
Canon City, Colo.; Larry (Sandy) Greenleaf; Roy (Polly), Wichita; and 
daughter-in-laws forever Sheryl Wenzl, Wichita; Missy McLain, Wichita; 
daughter-friend Pat Lewis, Inman, Ks; 16 grandchildren and 22 
great-grandchildren.

A Rosary will be said at 7 pm, Friday, March 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf.

A Memorial Mass for Rosemary will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, 
March 25th, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf with Father 
Joseph Kieffer and Father John Wolesky as co-celebrants. Carolyn Osborne
 will be the organist.&nbsp; Hymns are to include ”Ave Maria”, “How Great 
Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace” and “May The Angels Be Your Guide”.&nbsp; Bearers 
are Eugene Wenzl and Don Wenzl. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart 
Catholic Cemetery, east of Greenleaf.

The Christie-Anderes Funeral Home in Waterville is handling the arrangements.

Richard "Rick" Pineda Fernandez, age 64, of Manhattan, died March 17, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan.

He was born April 7, 1958, in San Antonio, TX, the son of Fernando and Petra (Pineda Priestley)

Rick
 worked for the Santa Fe Railroad prior to becoming a Substance Abuse 
Counselor. He ran a private clinic and a childcare business in Wichita, 
Kansas for many years. Rick also worked for Jostens later in life.

Rick
 will be remembered for his love of family, sense of humor and generous 
nature.  He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed antiquing, and cooking for 
friends. Rick learned gardening skills from his mother, and love of the 
guitar and music from his father.

Richard was preceded 
in death by Gina Bloomfield, mother to his son. Richard was later 
married to Elizabeth Hilton and had 2 daughters. They later divorced.

Rick
 is survived by a loving family including his three children: Sean 
Richards and his wife Ana of Oklahoma, Kali Malia Fernandez-Spencer and 
her husband Derek of Texas, Katie Fernandez of Colorado; and eight 
grandchildren: Camryn, Aiden, Trinity, Emerson, Leia-Rae, Preslee, 
Memphis and Jupiter; and his sister: Lydia French and her family of 
Milford, Kansas and his step-father Richard Priestley of Tecumseh, 
Kansas.

Cremation is planned with private family services.

Richard 'Rick' Pineda Fernandez

Regina  Rhyne, 74, of Junction City, passed away on March 20, 2023, at 
Ascension Via Christi Village surrounded by her loving family. 

A 
visitation will take place Monday, March 27, 2023, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at 
Johnson Funeral Home. She was born on April 19, 1948, to Frank 
and Dolores (Valentine) Rhyne in Chicago, Illinois. She attended 
Junction City Senior High in Kansas. After graduating, she went to 
Kansas State University. She then worked on Fort Riley until retirement.
 She was a loving sister, awesome mom, the best grandma and a 
wonderful friend to everyone she met. Playing cards, bingo, pinochle, 
dominoes, and attending the casino were her favorite past-times. Her 
family and friends always remembered her hosting their holiday and 
birthday celebrations. Taking care of her family was her top priority. She made sure to look after everyone, never worrying about herself. She
 is survived by her daughter, Selena Brown of Junction City; grandson, 
Gregg Henderson of Junction City; two sisters, Janis Rhyne and Amanda 
McLeod of Junction City; and a brother, Frank Rhyne Jr. of Junction City
 and a host of other loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded by her parents; three sisters: Debra Thomas, Renee Rhyne and Towana Rhyne of Chicago.&nbsp;

 She was a loving sister, awesome mom, the best grandma and a 
wonderful friend to everyone she met. Playing cards, bingo, pinochle, 
dominoes, and attending the casino were her favorite past-times. Her 
family and friends always remembered her hosting their holiday and 
birthday celebrations. Taking care of her family was her top priority. She made sure to look after everyone, never worrying about herself. She
 is survived by her daughter, Selena Brown of Junction City; grandson, 
Gregg Henderson of Junction City; two sisters, Janis Rhyne and Amanda 
McLeod of Junction City; and a brother, Frank Rhyne Jr. of Junction City
 and a host of other loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded by her parents; three sisters: Debra Thomas, Renee Rhyne and Towana Rhyne of Chicago.&nbsp;

Stephen "Steve" R. Kane, 67, of Junction City, passed away on March 21, 
2023, after a long journey with Lewy Body Dementia. 

Visitation will be 
held Thursday, March 30, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Johnson 
Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, 
March 31, 2023, at Johnson Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Doug Hamilton 
officiating. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will follow service
 at St. Mary's Cemetery. As Steve was an avid K-State Wildcat fan, 
family would like to encourage those in attendance for any of the 
services to wear their casual K-State and purple attire. Memorial

 was born on October 26, 1955, the son of Harold and Mabel (Hood) Kane. 
He was a 1973 graduate of Junction City High School and a lifelong

the love of his life, Rosie Lauri. On August 4, 1978, Steve and Rosie 
married and from that union, came their two daughters, Amy and Stefanie.
 As a Kansas State University Alumnus, Steve was the epitome of
 a true Wildcat fan and he never turned down the opportunity to cheer on
 the 'Cats; he also loved the Chiefs and Royals. Though known as a 
soft-spoken man, Steve proudly and loudly cheered during games be it in 
person or on TV. Steve devoted much of his free time to 
coaching his girls’ sports teams and volunteering at St. Xavier Catholic
 School sporting events such as the football chain gang and score 
keeping. From 1983 until his retirement, Steve worked in Internal 
Review and Audit Compliance on Ft. Riley. At the time of his retirement,
 he was serving as the Internal Review and Audit Compliance Director. Steve
 was a devoted and loyal husband and father. He loved his girls so much 
that he even danced in recitals and competed in pageants as the Tin Man.
 He was skilled at and enjoyed woodworking, creating many pieces for 
friends and family. Steve was looking forward to his retirement
 years and loved being Pop Pop to his four grandchildren. He enjoyed 
watching his grandkids’ games and recitals. His grandchildren were the 
light of life for the last fourteen years. His retirement years and time
 as Pop Pop was cut short due to his Lewy Body Dementia. As a 
man of few words, Steve had a quiet but strong presence; he had a way of
 making you feel supported without feeling judged. He used his words 
wisely and only when needed, whether for advice or to crack a joke. 
Family always came first and that was evident in the way he cared for 
both immediate and extended family. He always showed up to lend a 
helping hand or to just be present. Kids loved him for the way he 
acknowledged and interacted with them, and he could always be counted on
 to do his Donald Duck impression. Steve is survived by his 
wife, Rosemary; his two Daughters, Amy (Matt) Bailey of Topeka, Kansas, 
and Stefanie (Andrew) Darrow of Junction City, Kansas; brother, Gene

Stephen 'Steve' R. Kane

Andrea Caron Kempf passed away peacefully on March 20, 2023, after a 
long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She is survived by her husband 
of thirty years, Evan Luskin, two children, Robin Kempf (Peter Haxton) 
and Lucas Kempf (Purvee), and four grandchildren, Alison, Meerabela, 
Nick, and Hersh. A war baby, Andrea was born in San Francisco, CA, to 
Esther (Zelby) and Benjamin Caron. 

She was raised in Detroit, MI, 
attending Cass Tech, before moving with her parents and brother, Sam, to
 Albuquerque, NM, where she completed her high school education. After 
graduating from Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Arts, including a
 semester in Israel, she received a Master of Arts in Teaching from the 
Johns Hopkins University. She initially taught high school in 
Cleveland, OH, and in Manhattan, NY, but soon took her first job in a 
library at Columbia University. Later, Andrea moved to Cambridge, MA, 
with her first husband, had her two awesome kids, and got her Master of 
Library Science from Simmons College. This launched her rich career as a
 librarian. She worked at the Albuquerque Public Library, in the VISTA 
program, then at the University of Northern Colorado, and finally at the
 Johnson County Community College. Andrea was very involved in
 the Jewish community, and she loved to cook, but she will be remembered
 most as an avid reader and book reviewer. She represented the JCCC 
Billington Library in China, Hawaii, the Netherlands, and Russia and 
wrote a book about romance novels. She also wrote reviews for the 
Library Journal and the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle, among other 
publications, and won an award for Reviewer of the Year from Library 
Journal. She always had a book recommendation for everyone she met. 
Andrea met her second husband at a Jewish singles service at 
Congregation Kehillath Israel, and together they traveled around the 
world and enjoyed many opera performances. She will be dearly missed by 
many. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donating to
 the Alzheimer’s Association, MAZON, Harvesters, or the Yiddish Book 
Center.&nbsp;

Alvin Ray King, 63, of Manhattan, died, Monday, March 20th, at Ascension Via Christi Health Hospital.

Alvin
 was born in Manhattan, on July 3, 1959, the son of the late Alyce Joyce
 (Tidwell) and Loren Edward King. He was the husband of 43 years to 
Linda Sue (Nelson) King, who survives. They were married on July 21, 
1979, in Manhattan.  He was a 1977 graduate of Manhattan High School.  
Over the years, he was a truck driver for the companies like Folley 
Equipment of Manhattan, Manko Windows, Bayer Const., KDOT, Artex 
Manufacturing, and Kershaw Redi Mix.

Alvin is  survived
 by a daughter, Stacey M. (Kenneth) Scarbrough, of Topeka; a son,Michael
 A (Emily) King, of Shawnee; 3 grandchildren: Jaxon Scarbrough, Adley 
King, Aiden King; two sisters, Teri G. (Lewis) Cragg, of Wamego;  Linda 
S. King-Lake, of Manhattan.

The family will greet

Sharon Ann Cross, 75, was called home after a battle with cancer on Sunday, March 12, 2023.

Sharon
 was born March 16, 1947, in Herington, Kansas, to Charles W. and Alice 
Mae (Diepenbrock) Dittman. She grew up in the Hope, Kansas, area and 
attended Hope schools. She graduated from Hope High School in 1965 and 
continued her education at Brown Mackie School of Business in Salina. On
 April 9, 1966, she married the love of her life, Clifford Jon Cross, at
 St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek, rural Herington, Kansas. They 
have been enjoying life together for the last 56 years.

Sharon
 worked for Home Health through the State of Kansas for many years 
providing helpful and loving care for all her clients.  Sharon and CJ 
always put family first. They were at every activity and celebration for
 their children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed being a youth group 
leader, planting flowers, serving her church, and traveling the United 
States setting up book stands at conventions for Concordia Publishing 
House.

Survivors include her husband, Cliff “CJ” of the
 home; their children, Jennifer and Darren Tiers, of Clay Center, Tim 
and Jennifer Cross of Solomon, and Elesa and Justin Parsons, of El 
Dorado. Also survived by her grandchildren, Chelsea Deges (Ian), Shelby 
Turner (Trenton), Morgan Talbert, Brody Bryant, Jacob Tiers, Kylie 
Bryant, Lauren Wilson (Kevin), Shaelynn Cross (Fiancé, Dawson), Allison 
Cross, Jake Tole, Mallory Parsons, Cody Tole, Macy Parsons, and Graydon 
Parsons; great grandchildren, Ava Talbert, Taylynne Turner, Koy Byrd and
 Baby Wilson, due in May. Other survivors include her brother, Duane 
Dittman (Brenda) of Lincolnville; sister, Janice Fenske (John) of Park 
City;  sister, Charlotte Schultz (Jim) of Hope; sister-in-law, Diana 
Dittman, of Hope; uncle, Dale Diepenbrock (Marlyn) of Herington; aunt, 
Emmy Diepenbrock of Herington; along with many nieces and nephews.

Sharon Ann Cross

Vernon
 D. Holloway was born in rural McPherson County to parents, Carl S. and 
Anna F. (Stucky) Holloway in August of 1934; the youngest brother in the
 family with one younger sister.&nbsp; He grew up on the family farm, five 
miles south of McPherson; active in 4H and FFA.&nbsp; When he graduated from 
McPherson High School in 1951, at the age of 16, he continued working 
the family farm when his parents moved into town.&nbsp; He raised hogs and 
dairy cows, wheat, corn, milo and alfalfa.

He
 met Peggy Vigus through church youth group and married her in the 
McPherson Christian Church in June of 1956.&nbsp; They added three children 
to their young family:&nbsp; Heidi Ann in 1957, Carla Sharon in 1960 and Roy 
Derrin in 1964.&nbsp; Vernon continued farming and selling Watkins farm feed 
and mineral products.

The
 family moved off the farm in 1972, when Vernon went to work for the 
city Parks Department.&nbsp; They remained active in the Christian Church as 
youth leaders, elders and board members; as well as developed a lay 
ministry in bible studies and Christian counseling.&nbsp; They travelled 
throughout the Midwest participating in Lay Witness Missions targeted at
 local church renewal.

In
 summer of 1978, Vernon and Peggy were led to attend Rhema Bible College
 in Broken Arrow, OK and pursue full-time ministry.&nbsp; Following ministry 
school, they returned to McPherson and started Word of Faith Fellowship 
church, where they pastored for 25 years.&nbsp; During that tenure, they 
devoted themselves to teaching, church planting and missions, travelling
 to China, India, Thailand, Mexico, Alaska and several Native American 
reservation communities.

 Vernon’s wife of 56 years, died in 2013.&nbsp; He remarried Yvonne Daugherty
 of Bella Vista, AR (2013 – 2019), and later married Carol Friend in 
January 2020.&nbsp; Carol and Vernon made their home in McPherson until his 
death.&nbsp; He passed peacefully at McPherson Hospital on Monday, March 20, 
following complications from a stroke suffered Thursday evening.

 was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Anna (Stucky) Holloway; 
his siblings, Sherman Holloway of McPherson, KS, Herman Holloway of 
Roxbury, KS, Carl Holloway, Jr. of McPherson, KS, Bobby Lawrence 
Holloway of Chapman, KS, and Marieta Poston of Hillsboro, TX; his wife, 
Peggy; his daughter, Carla (Rowse) of Wichita KS; and grandsons, Michael
 Rowse at infancy and Adam Jantz of McPherson, KS.

He
 is survived by his wife Carol of the home; his daughter, Heidi Holloway
 Jantz (Steve) of McPherson, KS; his son, Derrin Holloway (Kayla) of 
Overland Park, KS; son-in-law, Kevin Rowse of Wichita, KS; 
grandchildren, Levi Jantz of McPherson, KS, Josh Jantz of Sterling 
Heights, MI, Melissa Rowse Alderman of Orlando, FL, Rachael Holloway of 
Loch Lloyd, MO, Jared Holloway of Kansas City, MO, Madison Holloway of 
Lawrence, KS, and Sadie Holloway of Lawrence, KS; numerous 
great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

The
 family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday, March 27, 
2023, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 
at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, March 28, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; A 
private graveside service will be held at McPherson Cemetery.

 D. Holloway was born in rural McPherson County to parents, Carl S. and 
Anna F. (Stucky) Holloway in August of 1934; the youngest brother in the
 family with one younger sister.&nbsp; He grew up on the family farm, five 
miles south of McPherson; active in 4H and FFA.&nbsp; When he graduated from 
McPherson High School in 1951, at the age of 16, he continued working 
the family farm when his parents moved into town.&nbsp; He raised hogs and 
dairy cows, wheat, corn, milo and alfalfa.He
 met Peggy Vigus through church youth group and married her in the 
McPherson Christian Church in June of 1956.&nbsp; They added three children 
to their young family:&nbsp; Heidi Ann in 1957, Carla Sharon in 1960 and Roy 
Derrin in 1964.&nbsp; Vernon continued farming and selling Watkins farm feed 
and mineral products.The
 family moved off the farm in 1972, when Vernon went to work for the 
city Parks Department.&nbsp; They remained active in the Christian Church as 
youth leaders, elders and board members; as well as developed a lay 
ministry in bible studies and Christian counseling.&nbsp; They travelled 
throughout the Midwest participating in Lay Witness Missions targeted at
 local church renewal.In
 summer of 1978, Vernon and Peggy were led to attend Rhema Bible College
 in Broken Arrow, OK and pursue full-time ministry.&nbsp; Following ministry 
school, they returned to McPherson and started Word of Faith Fellowship 
church, where they pastored for 25 years.&nbsp; During that tenure, they 
devoted themselves to teaching, church planting and missions, travelling
 to China, India, Thailand, Mexico, Alaska and several Native American 
reservation communities.Peggy,

Vernon D. Holloway

Ronald Dean Gronewaller, age 78 of Cawker City, KS, passed away on Feb 19, 2023.

He was born on January 11, 1945, in Cawker City, the son of Joseph 
Henry and Maxine Ellen (Behymer) Gronewaller. Following high school, he 
served in the US Army during the Vietnam War.

He was married for a short time to Diane Baird, and they had two daughters, Angela and Jennifer.

On March 7, 1984, Ron married Diannia (Dee) Louise Neal and these two
 shared their life experiences together for nearly 39 years. They 
resided for 20 years in McPherson where he became a life member of the 
VFW, before moving back to Cawker City in 2019.

Ron enjoyed helping people as a bus driver, truck driver, 
construction worker and in military service. He loved racing, rodeo, a 
good diner, and making people, especially children, laugh. Ron will be 
long remembered for his great storytelling and a memorable life filled 
with anecdotes and mischievous tales. He loved watching sunsets with his
 wife Dee and sent her a special sunset upon his passing.

Ron is survived by his two daughters, Angela Shellito and husband 
Wade of Beloit and Jennifer Hallack of Beloit; five grandchildren, Kylie
 Eitzmann, Jarret Eitzmann, Luke Eitzmann, Caitlyn Hallack and Bailey 
Shellito; one brother, Robert Gronewaller and wife Sheila of Omaha, NE; 
his wife Dee of Cawker City; three stepsons, Justin Bailey and wife 
Jolene of Pennsylvania, Troy Bailey and wife Kim of Manhattan, and 
Travis Bailey and wife Lori of Pennsylvania; ten wonderful 
step-grandchildren and fourteen great-step-grandchildren.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard 
Gronewaller and Roger Gronewaller; one sister, Marjorie Louise Brummer, 
and one great step-grandchild Bailey Jean Coggins.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on March 25, 2023 at 
the Cawker City United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 608 Lake Drive,
 Cawker City, Kansas.

Robert Duane Pedula, 82, of Manhattan, KS, formerly of Leavenworth 
for 30+ yrs, passed away, Sunday, March 19th, at Stormont-Vail Medical 
Center, Topeka.

Bob was born in Sheridan, WY on 
November 13, 1940, the son of the late Rose Marie (Raco) and Dominic 
Pedula. He was united in marriage to Ruth Pedula He was a retired 
Vocational Rehab Specialist for the  VA Hospital, but, prior to his work
 with the VA he was a high school shop teacher in Sheridan, WY.  Bob 
served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam era serving in Iceland.

Robert
 is  survived by his wife Ruth of the home; a daughter, Kristen Rachel 
(Kevin) Caldwell, of Manhattan;  a sister, Joan (Al) Smith, of Buffalo

Jane Frances (Zey) Veal passed away peacefully on March 20, 2023, at the
 age of 82, at her home in Abilene, Kansas, surrounded by family. Jane 
was born on November 3, 1940, to Louis and Pearl (Garten) Zey. 

Jane and 
Stan Veal were married on April 19th, 1958, and would have celebrated 
their 65th anniversary this April. 

In childhood, Jane enjoyed all 
sports, barrel racing, horse showing, and square dancing – both on and 
off-horseback. Swimming and diving competitions and cooking were fun 
pastimes she also enjoyed. She was Water Safety Instructor certified and
 taught adult swimming lessons and diving at Abilene pools. Her love of 
horses, trap shooting and hunting with Stan were interests she passed 
down to children and grandchildren. 
Jane was co-owner of Veal Construction Co., Abilene Truss Distributers, 
and Jesse Jane’s Trading Company with her husband Stan. She earned her 
Master’s in Education from Kansas State University. She completed her 
Master of Science Reading Specialist and Psychology degrees as well as 
two years post-graduate studies. She taught school in Abilene, Solomon 
and Chapman School districts for over 30 years. Jane was a member of the
 American Federation of Teachers organization and named to Who’s Who 
Among America’s Teachers. 
She was a past member of Sand Springs Saddle Club of Abilene. She loved 
the Wild Bill Hickock Rodeo and Fair and was the Abilene Parade Flag 
Bearer on horseback several times. She also enjoyed collecting, 
appraising and selling antiques. Jane was a member of Saint Andrew’s 
Altar Society at Saint Andrew’s Catholic Church. Her faith was a very 
important facet of her life. She often prayed the rosary in the car or 
while traveling, which was frequent as she loved to travel with Stan 
visiting places such as Ireland, Mexico, France, Italy, Tahiti and the 
Cook Islands. She also loved traveling to watch her children and 
grandchildren’s sporting events which included swimming, basketball, 
football, tennis, baseball, power lifting, track and horse showing. 
Anyone who spoke to Jane heard about all of her children’s and 
grandchildren’s achievements. 
In addition to horses and antiques, art was a big interest. She loved 
drawing, painting watercolors, and sculpture. She was a lifelong teacher
 and learner; researching antiques and furthering her education in 
graduate school were important pastimes to Jane. She passed along her 
love of reading, art, horses and dogs to her children and grandchildren.
 In her own words, she believed her “crowning achievements” were her 
three children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. 
She is survived by her husband Stan Ralph Veal, sisters Irene Glennon 
and Linda Zey, and children Blain Christopher Veal and wife Laurie, 
Stacia Ann (Veal) Nelson and husband Doug, Molly Michelle Irene (Veal) 
Veach and husband John, and grandchildren Taelor (Veal) Herrman and 
husband Shawn, Bridgette (Veal) Wuthnow and husband Nathan, Anna Nelson 
and husband Steve, Abigail (Nelson) Burns and husband Kevin, Addison 
Nelson and husband Collin, Sarah Veach, Benjamin Veach, her seven great 
grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and other beloved relatives. 
Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all her students. 
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 25, 2023, at

Jane F. Veal

Clifford A. “Chuck” Walker Jr., age 62 of Leonardville, passed away 
Monday, March 20, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born on April 22, 1960, in Rumford, Maine, the son of Clifford Sr. and Dorreen (Saunders) Walker.

On August 14, 2009, he married Sheryl Rippe.&nbsp; She survives of the home

Chuck worked in HVAC for construction companies.&nbsp; He loved to cook, 
hang out with his friends, play with his grandkids and go fishing in his
 younger years.&nbsp; He always had a good time with anyone and anywhere and 
was a great friend to all.

He is survived by his wife, Sheryl Walker; two children, Braden and 
Lindsey; one brother, Mike; one sister, Cheryl; three step-daughters, 
Jamie, Jessie and Jackie; nine grandchildren, and many nieces and 
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Christina.

Graveside services are pending with the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Monday, March 20, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.He was born on April 22, 1960, in Rumford, Maine, the son of Clifford Sr. and Dorreen (Saunders) Walker.On August 14, 2009, he married Sheryl Rippe.&nbsp; She survives of the homeChuck worked in HVAC for construction companies.&nbsp; He loved to cook, 
hang out with his friends, play with his grandkids and go fishing in his
 younger years.&nbsp; He always had a good time with anyone and anywhere and 
was a great friend to all.He is survived by his wife, Sheryl Walker; two children, Braden and 
Lindsey; one brother, Mike; one sister, Cheryl; three step-daughters, 
Jamie, Jessie and Jackie; nine grandchildren, and many nieces and 
nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Christina.Graveside services are pending with the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Clifford A. 'Chuck' Walker Jr.

Jean Leslie Bigbee Hill, age 76, of Manhattan, died March 19, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

She was born June 6, 1946, in Manhattan, the daughter of Howard L. and Virginia L. (Skinner) Bigbee.

Jean
 graduated from Manhattan High School in 1964, attended Kansas State 
University, and graduated from Patricia Stevens Finishing School in 
Wichita.

She and her parents operated Tuttle’s Antique 
Market in Manhattan from 1989 to 2001.  In 2001, she went to work as a 
real estate agent for ERA Real Estate and was the managing partner for 
many years prior to her retirement.

Jean was a life 
member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, was the 
co-founder of Second Helping at First Congregational in 2000, was the 
first female member of Sertoma in Kansas and also was the first female 
to serve as the District Chair for Sertoma, was a member of the 
Manhattan/Riley County Preservation Alliance, and was a huge K-State 
sports fan.

Survivors include her mother Virginia 
Bigbee of Manhattan; her sister Judy Ahrens and her husband Jim of 
Manhattan; and a large extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Friday, March 31st, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

A
 Celebration of Jean’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 
1st, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 700 Poyntz 
Avenue, Manhattan, with Reverend Caela Simmons Wood officiating.  
Private inurnment will be in Valley View Memorial Park Cemetery east of 
Manhattan.

Jean L. Bigbee Hill

Nina Marie Schoenfeld, 89, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 17, 2023. 
 Nina was born April 26, 1933, in Topeka, the daughter of Eugene and 
Meda Degarmo Stebbins. She was a graduate of Topeka High School. On May 
12, 1952, Nina and Fred R. Schoenfeld were united in marriage at St. 
Joseph Catholic Church, enjoying 64 years together prior to his death 
July 8, 2016. Nina’s first job was at Bobo’s Drive-In. She was
 employed for 23 years at Hayden High School as their baker and was 
famous for her cinnamon rolls. She retired from Washburn Rural Schools 
five years later. Nina was always up for a game of bridge and 
was a member of several bridge clubs throughout her life. But she really
 just enjoyed any card game. She and Fred were involved in the Kansas 
Hunter Safety program as instructors and in the front office for the 
clinics. She was a master at crocheting and won a championship ribbon at
 the county fair for her work. She also enjoyed fishing, sewing, bingo 
and bowling. But more than anything, Nina loved her family and spending 
time with them. Survivors include her children, Karen 
Schiffelbein (John), Topeka, Kenda Miller (Duane), Topeka, Richard 
Schoenfeld (Mary), Wamego, and Georgina Engler (Bruce), Burlingame; 
eleven grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; five 
great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Mary Kay Stratton (Jack), 
Auburn KS. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Eugene 
Stebbins Jr. her sisters, Virginia Blossom, Nancy Baird and her twin 
sister, Lila Lee Shinn. Visitation will be Thursday, March 23,
 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish
 Road, Topeka KS 66614, where the rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. 
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, March 24,
 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary

Nina Marie Schoenfeld

Mary Jo Griffith, age 94, of Manhattan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

Mary
 Jo was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Leavenworth, KS and received
 her Bachelor of Science degree in home economics and education from 
Kansas State University, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi 
Sorority. Thereafter Mary Jo received her Master of Science degree in 
education from Iowa State University and her Doctorate degree in 
education from The Ohio State University.

Mary Jo began
 her teaching career at Marymount College in Salina, Kansas before 
becoming a beloved professor at her alma mater, Kansas State 
University’s College of Education, where she taught for 35 years.

She
 enjoyed traveling the world, was an avid Kansas State athletics 
supporter and could often be found around Manhattan playing Bridge with 
friends.

Mary Jo is preceded in death by her parents Tom and Eleanor Griffith, and her sister Eleanor Stolzer (Bill).

She
 is survived by her sister Martha Dean (Dr. Richard), two nieces, Ellen 
Bolen (Dan) and Mary Kevin Giller (Tom); five nephews R. Thomas Dean 
(Dr. Gretchen), Matthew Dean (Katie), Evan Dean (Alison), Patrick Dean 
(Courtney) and Mark Dean (Kate) and many great nieces and nephews who 
will miss her dearly.

Private family funeral services 
will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, in Tonganoxie, KS, with Fr. 
Mark Goldasich officiating. Place of interment will be the Sacred Heart 
Catholic Cemetery in Tonganoxie, KS.

The family would

Wesley W.  Watson

Marilyn Jean (Brandon) Twining, daughter of Francis and Alma (Elder) Brandon, was born October 19, 1939, in rural Forty Four (now known as Hatter’s Corner), Arkansas. She grew up in various north-central Kansas farming communities. Having accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior in 1956 she was baptized at West Side Baptist Church, Topeka, Kansas. She graduated from Highland Park high School, Topeka, Kansas in 1957. On June 1, 1958, she was united in marriage with Gail L. Twining at West Side Baptist Church, Topeka, Kansas. To this marriage were born a son, Trenton, and two daughters, Denise and Leslie.

In 1961, she moved with her husband to Manhattan, Kansas, where she became private secretary to the Dean of Intramural Sports and Head Coach of the Crew Rowing Team at Kansas State University. When her husband answered the call to the Pastoral Ministry in 1970, she moved with him and their three children to Washington, Kansas, where she became Deputy Registrar of Deeds for Washington County, Kansas. When she moved again with her family to Lansing, Kansas in 1975, she became Executive Secretary to the Vice President for Development at Saint Mary’s College, Leavenworth, Kansas. At the same time, she was busily acting as proofreader, typist and chief encourager for her husband, Gail, while he was earning a college degree and a seminary degree.

After moving a fourth time with her family in 1977 to Tekamah, Nebraska, she became Bookkeeper and unofficial “Assistant Administrator” at Tekamah Nursing Home (now known as Tekamah Arbor Care Center). It was in Tekamah where all three of her children married and left home. It was also here she became a member of Tekamah Chapter Number 131, Order of the Eastern Star.

From Tekamah, she moved with her husband to Huron, South Dakota. Here, she took a course preparing her to be licensed as a Real Estate Agent, working for Ace Realty. A sixth move brought her to rural Benton, Kansas - a few miles northeast of Wichita, Kansas. It was back to school again, this time preparing to be certified as Dietary Manager for Wheat State Manor Nursing Home, Whitewater Kansas.

Upon retiring in 2001, she moved one more time with her husband, back to the place they had considered to be home for many a year, Tekamah. Here, she worked for three years as Proofreader for the Burt County Plaindealer and the Midwest Messenger.

She went on to be with the Lord March 17, 2023, after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Berkley and Glenn Brandon, a sister, Wanda Cozine and two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Brandon and Marlene Brandon. She Leaves behind to mourn her passing and to look forward to the reunion that is to come, husband, Gail; son Trenton and his wife, Barb; Daughters, Denise Hunter and her husband, Dave and Leslie Petersen and her husband, Ray; eight grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Especially to be noted among the latter are the staff at Tekamah Arbor Care Center, who cared for her so well in her illness of nine long years.
