Margaret (Coe) Figge, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025, at the age of 93.&nbsp; Born on July 27, 1932, in Greenock, Scotland, Margaret lived a life marked by grace, resilience, and unwavering love for her family.

Raised with strong Catholic values, Margaret dedicated herself to nurturing those around her.&nbsp; Her kindness was instinctive, her wisdom hard-earned, and her laughter a gift to all who knew her.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Clarmont Figge; parents, Alfred and Mary (Gordon) Coe; brothers, Alfred Coe, Charlie Coe, Edward Coe, Fredrick Coe, Frank Coe; sisters, Bridget Irby and Cathrine Darakjian.&nbsp; She is survived by her children: Kevin (Kelly) Figge, Colleen (Wayne) Walls, Eric (Stacey) Figge, and Chrissy (David) Parker; grandchildren: Nicholas (Danielle) Figge, Jessica (Luis) Palos, Timothy (Kassandra) Vaughan, Johnna (Christian) Cox, Joseph (Markio) Burger, Emily Quick, Ashley Cope, Tanner (Annie) Harding; eight great-grandchildren; brother Gordon Coe; sister Mary Bassler; and many nieces and nephews who will carry forward her legacy of compassion, love, and generosity.

Margaret comes from a traditional Scottish catholic family being the middle child of ten.&nbsp; As the middle child, her older siblings were off working or serving in the Royal Military, leaving her to tend over her younger siblings.&nbsp; Margaret had the uncanny ability to rattle off all of the siblings' names in order, forwards or backwards, in a melodic rhythm in less than 15 seconds to the amazement to those she cantered it off to.&nbsp; Most of her siblings were strewn across the globe.&nbsp; The moments she cherished most were when she and her sisters reunited after long stents apart, especially the five years she spent living in Florida with Bridget and Mary.

Margaret moved to the United States under the sponsorship of Dr. &amp; Mrs. Donio to be a live-in nanny for them making the trip to the states on the Queen Mary.&nbsp; After her service was complete with the Donio’s, she moved to Allentown PA., where she met her husband at the local USO where her and friends often went to dance.&nbsp; They returned to her husband's home state of Kansas to be wed and eventually landed in the Kansas City area where they raised their family.

Once Margaret's kids started school, she began working as cafeteria staff in the Turner School District. She spent over 30 years there, serving meals to students, including her own children and eventually her grandchildren.&nbsp; Margaret was a life member of the Moose Lodge #1999 where she and her husband spent their leisure time supporting the lodges many charities, dancing on Saturday nights (where they were known as Fred &amp; Ginger), playing bingo on Friday nights and Sunday socials.&nbsp; She attended St. John the Evangalist &amp; Sacred Heart Catholic churches faithfully.

Margaret enjoyed playing the slot machines, not only in Las Vegas, but also at the local casinos in Kansas City and taking senior bus day trips to various surrounding casinos.&nbsp; She enjoyed watching game shows, classic movies and TV shoes, and any show with John Wayne or Tom Selleck in them.&nbsp; She would watch TV and work her word search puzzles in her later years.&nbsp; Her stories about her life growing up in Scotland were enjoyed by all she met. Growing up in Scotland during World War II was quite daunting during her childhood years and provided interesting stories.

A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon (October 2, 2025) at 2:00 at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.&nbsp; Burial will follow at St. Luke Lutheran South Cemetery in Wheaton, KS.

Visitation will be Thursday afternoon (October 2, 2025) from 1:00 until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Margaret ( Coe ) Figge

Daniel Keith Hughes, 43, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on Thursday (September 18, 2025) at his home in Manhattan.

Born June 27, 1982 in Manhattan, Daniel was the son of Guy and Patsy (Koerner) Hughes. He was previously married to Amanda Mead. On October 14, 2021, Daniel married Betsy Oleson in Sioux Falls, SD. She survives.

An avid reader, Daniel also enjoyed watching documentaries on T.V. and spending time with his family.

Daniel was currently employed as a manager for Serve Pro in Manhattan.

Survivors include his wife, Betsy; his parents, Guy &amp; Patsy Hughes; three children, Robert Hughes, Thomas Hughes and Nicole Hughes; his father in law and mother in law, Ken &amp; Bonnie Oleson; and three sisters in law, Amber Melius (Levi), Elizabeth Oleson (John Town) and Dynasty Carnahan (Brandon).

Daniel was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dwight &amp; June Hughes and Chuck &amp; Betty Koerner.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning (September 25, 2025) at 10:30 at Trinity Baptist Church in Wamego with the Rev. Dr. Tony Mattia officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening (September 24, 2025) from 5:00 to 7:00 at Trinity Baptist Church in Wamego.

Graveside services will be held Friday afternoon (September 26, 2025) at 1:00 at the Severy Southlawn Cemetery in Severy, KS

Daniel Keith Hughes

Judy Erika Fielder, 62, of Chapman, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on September 16, 2025.

 Born on November 30, 1962, in Huntington, New York, Judy was the daughter of German immigrants Helmut and Waltraud “Wally” Cordier (Holle). Following her father’s passing in 1964, Wally moved Judy and her sisters, Isabel and Elizabeth (Liz), to Dwight, Kansas, to be near family. Wally later married Emory Strauss, and together they welcomed a son, Michael. Growing up on the family’s farm in rural Junction City, Judy developed a lifelong love of animals, especially dogs, and devoted herself to caring for them through 4-H and farm work.

 Judy graduated from Junction City High School in 1981, where she formed many friendships that she treasured throughout her life. She remained actively involved in organizing and attending class reunions, always cherishing the bonds she built during those years.

 On August 1, 1981, Judy married her soulmate, Gradon “Grady” Fielder. They met while she worked at Food 4 Less and he delivered for PepsiCo. Their early years together were filled with trips to the lake, racing events, and gatherings with friends and family. They later welcomed two sons, Brent Lee in 1985 and Kasey Ryan in 1988. The Fielder family made their home in Chapman, spending countless weekends boating at Milford Lake, attending the boys’ sporting events, and cheering on races at local dirt tracks. Family vacations to NASCAR races and Table Rock Lake were among Judy’s favorite traditions.

 The heart of their home was always “The Shop.” More than a place to work on race cars and go-carts, it became the hub for gatherings filled with laughter, good food, and Judy’s signature hospitality. She was known for making everyone feel welcome, always ready with cold drinks and homemade treats. From birthdays and graduations to holidays and her beloved annual Labor Day parties—celebrated for over 30 years—Judy’s shop events became cherished community traditions.

 A gifted gardener, Judy found joy in her flowers, vegetables, and landscaping projects. Every spring, pallets of mulch and potting soil would happily consume her free time. Watering plants in the heat of the summer was her favorite pastime. Her gardens provided the ingredients for her famous salsa and zucchini bread, and she poured love into every detail of her yard.

 Judy retired in April 2025 after a remarkable 37-year career with the Department of Defense at Fort Riley. She deeply valued the friendships she built with her colleagues and took pride in her work. Alongside her career, Judy dedicated over two decades to fitness instruction, beginning in 1996 as an aerobics teacher at Geary Rehab and Fitness and continuing at gyms from Fort Riley to Chapman. Her seemingly endless amount of energy and her passion for health and wellness inspired many. In recent years, she was a familiar sight speed-walking through Chapman—always with a smile, always ready to pause for a neighborly chat or deliver some fresh baked goods and salsa.

 Family was Judy’s greatest joy. She adored her daughters-in-law, Lisa and Lacey, and took immense pride in her four grandchildren: Grason, Lillian, Landyn, and Wyatt. Sleepovers, shopping trips, cheering them on from the sidelines of their sporting events and enjoying pool days were the highlights of her life recently. She poured her love into every moment with them. Judy always made sure their favorite snacks were close at hand, and she could never keep a secret from them—her excitement to see her family loved and spoiled was simply too great to contain.

 Judy is survived by her husband of 44 years, Grady; sons Brent (Lisa) of Liberty, Missouri, and Kasey (Lacey) of Chapman; grandchildren Grason, Lillian, Landyn, and Wyatt; siblings Isabel Schmedemann of Herington, Liz Schoenberner of Georgetown, Texas, and Mike Strauss of Junction City; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Waltraud and Helmut, and her in-laws, Bill and Shirley Fielder.

 Judy’s legacy of love, kindness, hard work, and community spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

 A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 26, at 11:00 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ, with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at “The Shop” in Chapman to honor Judy’s memory in the place she loved most. Food will be served starting at 1:30 and guests are welcome through the evening.

This fall, Judy had looked forward to beginning volunteer work at the Geary County Food Pantry. The family suggests memorial donations be directed to the food pantries serving Chapman and Junction City.

Contributions to the Chapman food pantry may be made payable to Clover Cabinet, while donations for Junction City may be made to the Geary County Food Pantry.

Judy Erika Fielder

Ruth Ann Lackey, age 77, of Huntsville, Alabama and formerly of Manhattan, passed away September 13, 2025, at the Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville.

She was born on August 25, 1948, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Ross) Henderson. After graduating from high school in the class of 1966, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, and she later earned her master’s degree in Elementary Education.

On August 14, 1971, in Atchison, she was united in marriage to Dale Lackey. He preceded her in death September 14, 2012.

She taught grade school for 32 years, mostly teaching 4th grade. Ruth enjoyed teaching children and watching them learn. She was employed with USD 383 in Manhattan for 27 years. Following her retirement, she was a member of and volunteered with the KARSP (Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel) and the MAREA (Manhattan Area Retired Educators Association)

Ruth was a member of the First Christian Church in Manhattan for many years. She was involved with many church groups and volunteered to help as often as she could with church events.

Ruth later moved to Alabama in 2014. There she enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. She became a member of the First Christian Church in Huntsville and was highly active in many church organizations and events. She loved going to local musicals and plays in Alabama. Some of favorite hobbies were gardening and having quiet time reading.

In addition to her husband Dale, she was preceded in death by her son John Lackey, on February 10, 2020.

She is survived by her daughter Christi Sexton and her husband David, of Huntsville, and her grandchildren, Cara Sexton and Evan Sexton, and her brother Jim Henderson.

Graveside services for Ruth will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday September 20, 2025, at the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan, with Pastor Laurie Lewis officiating.

Ruth Ann Lackey

Richard Thomas Ross and Leticia (“Letty”) Acosta Asuncion Ross, a devoted couple married for 50 years, entered eternal rest in 2025—Richard on March 15 and Leticia on September 3.

Richard was born on December 29, 1948, in Manhattan, Kansas, to Harold Ross and Alice Duncan. He graduated from Manhattan High School in 1967, continued his education at Manhattan Area Technical College, and proudly served four years in the United States Navy. Following his service, he worked for the Manhattan Post Office, where he later retired.

Leticia was born on June 3, 1943, in Olongapo, Philippines, to Pedro and Teodora Acosta Asuncion. She graduated from Olongapo High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of the Philippines. After moving to Kansas, she first worked at McCall’s Pattern Company before devoting herself to raising her two daughters. She later worked as a food supervisor at Marlatt Elementary School and eventually found her calling with Sodexo at Kansas State University, where she loved catering events and serving the student athletes. Letty cherished her work, her coworkers, and the community she built there. She was also an active member of the FILSA (Filipino Student Association) community, where she helped many Filipino students adjust to life at Kansas State and in Kansas.

Richard and Letty met in the Philippines while Richard was stationed there with the Navy in the early 1970s. Their love story began in Manila and continued when they married on January 20, 1975, in Manhattan, Kansas. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and love.

Richard enjoyed fishing, cheering on Kansas State football, following the Atlanta Braves, and sharing his love of Rock ’n’ Roll music. He was a collector at heart, with a special fondness for hats, coins, and stamps. Letty loved to cook, serve others, and share her warmth with family and friends. Both cherished family gatherings, trips to California, Las Vegas, Branson, and frequent visits to Prairie Band Casino.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Ross and Alice Duncan. He is survived by his brother, David Ross; and sisters, Marcia Woolsey and Susan (David) Burton.

Leticia was preceded in death by her parents, Pedro and Teodora Acosta Asuncion and her sister Lourdes Asuncion Blurete. She is survived by her twin sister, Tess (Vic) Niegas.

Together, Richard and Letty are survived by two daughters, Christina Davin and Michelle (Robbie) Collins; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service honoring Leticia will be announced at a later time and will be held at the Welcome Cemetery, near Alta Vista, Kansas.

Richard Thomas Ross and Leticia (“Letty”) Acosta Asuncion Ross, a devoted couple married for 50 years, entered eternal rest in 2025—Richard on March 15 and Leticia on September 3.Richard was born on December 29, 1948, in Manhattan, Kansas, to Harold Ross and Alice Duncan. He graduated from Manhattan High School in 1967, continued his education at Manhattan Area Technical College, and proudly served four years in the United States Navy. Following his service, he worked for the Manhattan Post Office, where he later retired.Leticia was born on June 3, 1943, in Olongapo, Philippines, to Pedro and Teodora Acosta Asuncion. She graduated from Olongapo High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of the Philippines. John J. Brychta,76, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on September 10, 2025.

He was born on March 21, 1949, in Marysville, Kansas. He attended Hanover High School where he graduated in 1967.

John served in the US Army from 1968-1970 where he served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of National Dusters, Quad &amp; Searchlights Associations, and attended annual meetings.

He spent close to 50 years in the floor covering business and worked at KSU doing furniture upholstery and repair.

He spent the last 43 years living at Lake Elbo enjoying lake life. He had several different boats while living at the lake and could be found with a rod and reel casting off the dock he built in his back yard.

John spent lots of time working on and around his home. There was always a plentiful garden and a manicured lawn. As well as several rock walls he built around the property.

His pride and joy was restoring his 1969 Camaro. He bought it after he returned from Vietnam and sold it after 5 years only to find the old car 30 years later. He spent several years bringing his car back to life and into showroom condition.

He had a passion for classic rock music, especially Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles, and Tom Petty. He enjoyed attending their concerts.&nbsp; He liked to travel in their RV spending winters going south to Texas, Arizona, Florida, and Mexico.

John also enjoyed spending time with his loved ones.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife, Rita, his children, Josh Brychta and Ali Ross and son-in-law Bryan Ross; his grandchildren, Dakota and Easton Ross; his stepchildren, Chad Cecil, Ty Cecil, and daughter-in-law Paige Hayes; siblings David Brychta and Annette Kelch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Anne Brychta, and his sister, Judy Dollins.

Graveside inurnment will be held at 11:00a.m. Friday October 17, 2025, at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00p.m. Friday October 17, 2025, at the Lake Elbo Clubhouse in Manhattan.

Lee Ann (Rousey) Silva, age 64, passed away peacefully in her home in Manhattan, KS on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Lee Ann was born July 9, 1961. She was the youngest child of Robert “Bob” and Mary Lou (Harwood) Rousey. Lee Ann was a life-long resident of Manhattan, apart from one year in Ojai, California. Lee Ann graduated from Manhattan High School in 1979 and attended Kansas State University.

She married Christopher “Chris” Silva in Branson, MO on September 12, 1987. Their love story was admired by all who knew them. They were a fun-loving couple who enjoyed gardening, jeep rides on the prairie, attending concerts, and caring for their many pets.

Over her career, Lee Ann worked at Kansas State Bank, as the Food Program Director at the Center for Child Development at Kansas State University, for Horticulture Services, and her own business LA Cakes &amp; Cookie Bouquets. Her recent years were spent caring for her husband during his battle with cancer and her mother. She found joy in her many arts and crafts projects, walks to the creek, and baking creations.

Lee Ann was proceeded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, and her brother Nicholas Rousey. She is survived by her brother Bob Rousey (Carol) of San Juan Capistrano, CA, niece Kristin Umscheid of Ojai, CA, and grand-nieces Jasmine Umscheid and Maple Umscheid. Lee Ann will be deeply missed by all her friends and family and her five feline companions.

Sigrid Elma Louise Holstein Straub, 90, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on September 13, 2025, (the 55th anniversary of her father’s passing) at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Wamego, Kansas. Sigrid was born on April 10, 1935, in East Prussia, later becoming Germany, to parents Karl and Hertha (Neumann) Holstein. She lost a baby sister, Urte Regina and her mother during WWII. She and her brother, Ulrich Karl, spent time in an orphanage in Poland until they were able to reunite with their father and extended family. 

Sigrid began correspondence with Norbert Straub with Christine Setzer acting as their interpreter. She made the decision to emigrate to the U.S. in 1958, sponsored by her future brother-in-law, Walter Straub. She married Norbert on February 3, 1959, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Flush, Kansas. She learned English with help from Norbert’s family and Father Biehler, priest of St. Joseph Church. From their marriage, two children were born, Silke and Bernard. Norbert preceded her in death in 1996. Throughout her life in the United States, she stayed in touch with her extended family in Germany. 

Sigrid was a gentle soul. She had a passion for knitting and crocheting. She found joy in gardening, both vegetables and flowers. Her home became a gathering place for her new family and friends. She and Norbert later opened their hearts and arms by babysitting all their grandchildren. Sigrid is survived by her children, Silke Arand and Bernard (Brenda) Straub; her beloved grandchildren, Christopher Arand, Scott Arand, Robert (Sherry) Arand, Eric Straub, John Straub, and Nichole (Phil) Dreiling; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, J.D., Piper, Axle, Margo, Greta, Sybil, Zayne, Savannah, and Austin. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family in the United States and Germany. Sigrid was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sister, spouse, grandson, Russell Arand, and son-in-law, Ron Arand. 

Sigrid's family will greet friends during a visitation on September 22, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego, Kansas. Janice Leah Konrade was born December 9, 1945, to Emery and Marian (Hoesing) Heine in Yankton, South Dakota. She attended grade school in St. Helena, Nebraska, and graduated from Mount Marty Catholic High School in Yankton. Jan went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Creighton University and her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Nebraska in 1968.

She began her career at Methodist Youthville in Newton, Kansas, and from 1970 to 1975 worked for the Dodge City Diocese Migrant program. On August 1, 1970, Jan married the love of her life, Reginald Konrade, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Helena, Nebraska.

Jan and Reg made their first home in Ulysses, Kansas, before moving to Abilene in 1976. There, Jan dedicated her life to raising six children—five sons and one daughter—while also serving her community. She worked for more than 30 years as a licensed social worker, both at Abilene Memorial Hospital and through the Central Kansas Cooperative in Education, supporting countless families and students.

A faithful member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene, Jan was an RCIA leader and active in choir, a lector, and Ladies of St. Andrew’s.

Jan had a deep passion for marriage and family, a mission she and Reg shared throughout their lives. They first served as facilitators for Marriage Encounter weekends and later became Family Life Directors at St. Andrew’s and for the Diocese of Salina. Together, they hosted weekly family nights in their home, led marriage seminars, orchestrated a diocesan bus pilgrimage to Washington, D.C., for the March for Life, and started the Salina Diocese Men’s Conference to strengthen faith, marriage, and family life.

Jan faced her health challenges with courage and grace, having been diagnosed with leukemia in 2016 and Parkinson’s disease in 2019. She passed away on September 15, 2025, at Village Manor in Abilene with her husband by her side.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Reg; her children Jason (Monica) of Lebo, KS; Jenell (Brad) Hartman of Abilene, KS; Fr. Jarett of Beloit, KS; Jon (Laura) of Beloit, KS; and Jamie (Amy) of Gardner, KS, and daughter-in-Law Tamara Lindholm of McPherson, KS. Jan is also survived by four sisters and four brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son Jory of Inman, KS, and her sisters Loretta and Debbie of Nebraska.

Jan was the proud grandmother of 23 grandchildren—17 boys and 6 girls—and leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service.

Shirley A. Deters, 89, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on September 12, 2025, in Abilene, Ks.

Shirley Ann Deters was born on April 2, 1936, in Pawnee, NE to Bernard and Anna (Schafer) Runnebaum. She graduated from High School in Seneca, Ks. She then went on to St. Francis School of Nursing in Topeka, Ks. where she graduated in September of 1956.

On April 23, 1957, Shirley married Clarence A. Deters at Sacred Heart Parish, Baileyville, Ks. After a few years of farming and Shirley working in a rural hospital, they moved to the city of Topeka where Clarence would join the fire department, and Shirley would continue in the nursing field for 47 years in various capacities with the last several years as a hospice nurse. She had a special way of ministering to those getting ready to pass on. She brought God’s love to them, prayed with them and tended to their needs.

In 1964 they were blessed with their son, Steven. In 1967, their family was complete with the addition of their daughter, Michele.

The family spent a lot of time together at the lake enjoying camping, boating, fishing and water skiing. Shirley taught so many people how to water ski over the course of at least 30 years!

Shirley was a woman of very deep faith. She not only possessed that gift, but she poured herself into studying her Catholic faith and the Bible so she could know Jesus more and she loved sharing her knowledge with others. Shirley was always hosting a Bible study in her home, no matter what place she called home over the years of her life. She could be found in her rocking chair every morning, reading her scripture and praying for family, friends, strangers or whatever the Lord put on her heart. She was a friend and defender of Jesus!

Family was important to Shirley. She LOVED her grandchildren and always made an effort to spend time with them. She made it her cause to make each one feel special and loved. She and Clarence had about 65 nieces and nephews between them, and she loved them all very much.

Shirley loved staying active and after her retirement she enjoyed playing golf, making rosaries to give away, spending time with friends and family and travelling.

She was a long-time member of Saint Aloysius Parish in Meriden, Ks. where she was active in many ministries in which she graciously served when called upon. Later, she was a member at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka, Ks.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Clarence. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Bernard and Anna; brothers, Bernard, Ralph, Vincent and Galen Runnebaum; and sisters, Evelyn Lackey, Meletta (Peggy) Marconett and Edna (Pat) Jensen.

Survivors include a son, Steven Deters and wife Cynthia, and their children, Trevor, Justin and Ashley, of Abilene, Ks.; Daughter, Michele Cromer and husband Greg, and their daughter Claire, of Overland Park, Ks.

On Thursday, September 18, 2025, a rosary will be held at 6:30pm at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Abilene, Ks. with visitation to follow at 7:00pm.

On Saturday, September 20, 2025, a rosary starting at 1:30pm, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville, Ks. Shirley will be laid to rest at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Baileyville.

She had a special way of ministering to those getting ready to pass on. She brought God’s love to them, prayed with them and tended to their needs.In 1964 they were blessed with their son, Steven. In 1967, their family was complete with the addition of their daughter, Michele.The family spent a lot of time together at the lake enjoying camping, boating, fishing and water skiing. Shirley taught so many people how to water ski over the course of at least 30 years!Shirley was a woman of very deep faith. She not only possessed that gift, but she poured herself into studying her Catholic faith and the Bible so she could know Jesus more and she loved sharing her knowledge with others. Shirley was always hosting a Bible study in her home, no matter what place she called home over the years of her life. She could be found in her rocking chair every morning, reading her scripture and praying for family, friends, strangers or whatever the Lord put on her heart. She was a friend and defender of Jesus!Family was important to Shirley. She LOVED her grandchildren and always made an effort to spend time with them. She made it her cause to make each one feel special and loved. She and Clarence had about 65 nieces and nephews between them, and she loved them all very much.Shirley loved staying active and after her retirement she enjoyed playing golf, making rosaries to give away, spending time with friends and family and travelling.She was a long-time member of Saint Aloysius Parish in Meriden, Ks. where she was active in many ministries in which she graciously served when called upon. Later, she was a member at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka, Ks.She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Clarence. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Bernard and Anna; brothers, Bernard, Ralph, Vincent and Galen Runnebaum; and sisters, Evelyn Lackey, Meletta (Peggy) Marconett and Edna (Pat) Jensen.Survivors include a son, Steven Deters and wife Cynthia, and their children, Trevor, Justin and Ashley, of Abilene, Ks.; Daughter, Michele Cromer and husband Greg, and their daughter Claire, of Overland Park, Ks.On Thursday, September 18, 2025, a rosary will be held at 6:30pm at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Abilene, Ks. with visitation to follow at 7:00pm.On Saturday, September 20, 2025, a rosary starting at 1:30pm, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville, Ks. Carol Colleen Howard, 83, died at Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman, Kansas on September 15, 2025.

She was born December 26th, 1941 in Alta Vista, KS and graduated from Alta Vista High School. After high school, she worked at various retail stores and a thrift store with her family. She met and married Martin Miles Howard in 1959 and they started a family soon after.

Carol spent most of her life caring for others and being involved in various groups and activities such as the Rebekahs, 4-H, the Boy Scouts and all of the various sports her children were in. She loved music, reading, cooking, playing Bingo and watching the Kansas City Royals. We will always remember her for being welcoming of others, even when it came to her children’s friends. She was almost like a second mom to some of them. She was selfless and devoted to her family. Their well-being was most important to her.

She is survived by her sons, Daniel Howard (Carol) of Abilene, KS; son Benjamin Howard of Junction City, KS; Shawn Howard (Nicole); of Chapman, KS; Jacob Howard (Angela) of Burlingame, KS; grandchildren, Clint Howard (Haley) of Abilene, KS; Zach Howard of San Diego, CA; Rachel Howard of Longmont, CO; Paige Howard of Pittsburgh, KS; Addison Howard of Burlingame, KS and a great grandchild, Kemper Howard of Abilene, KS, and her brother Roger Matthews of Kansas City. Francis Joseph “Joe” Brockish, 82, of St. George, Kansas, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2025, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

Joe was born July 14, 1943, in Leavenworth, Kansas, the oldest son of Gayland and Ruth (Lindenberg) Brockish. He attended grade school and graduated in 1961 from Wamego High School. Once Joe graduated from high school, he was excited to join the United States Air Force.

Joe served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict and worked as a radio tech on the jet fighters. His experience with communications lead Joe to work at the phone company where he worked as an engineer with the Contel Telephone. While working for Contel, he lived in St. Marys with his loving wife and three sons. In 1989, given promotions thru Contel he was moved to Trumann, Arkansas and then to Pocahontas, Arkansas. In this time, he developed a strong network of friends and loved ones that he remained connected to thru out the course of his life. In 1998, after the passing of his son, Adam, he returned to his home state of Kansas and retired from the phone company. Once retired, Joe had to stay busy so he worked for Rock Creek High School and then at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University as general Maintenance during this time.

Joe’s life was highlighted by the simple concept of service to others. One of the most important parts of Joe’s life was his commitment to the fraternal order of the Knights of Columbus (KofC). After moving to Kansas, Joe devoted himself to Flush Council #902 at St. Josephs Church, w

ere he held several leadership positions including Grand Knight and then Financial Secretary which he held until just before his passing. Joe was also part of the Thomas A. McNeive 4th Degree Assembly, where he served as the Faithful Navigator for a time. In addition, he took on the role of District Deputy for Kansas District #24.Through his work with the Knights of Columbus, Joe showed his deep commitment to helping others, following God’s will, and living by the values of the Catholic Church. This desire of service was seen thru all aspects of Joe’s life. He was always known to open his door to anyone in need and would be the first to volunteer to mow the St. Joseph’s Cemetery. His strong faith and close friendships gave him a life full of love and meaningful experiences. Joe will be missed by many!

Joe married Theresa “Teri” Ebert on June 8, 1979, at Flush. They shared 45 years together side by side until Teri’s death on November 5, 2024.

Joe is survived by his children; Todd Brockish and his wife Stephenie, of Gainesville, Florida, Andrew Brockish and his wife, Jucinta, of St. George, and Margo Fries of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Nicholle, Christopher, Ericka, Drake, Paige, Anthony , Amira, and Adam; as well as his siblings, Richard Brockish (Linda), Wamego, Deborah Ernsbarger (Mark), Glasco, and Betty Oliver ( Mike), Kearney, Nebraska. Dawn Michelle Trotter-Meadows, born on February 26, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois, entered eternal rest on September 6, 2025, in Junction City, Kansas. She was a remarkable woman, cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Dawn was a shining star possessing a beautiful sense of humor and a loving heart that made others feel happy and cared for. Her door was always open to anyone who sought comfort and support, a true testament to her generous spirit. Dawn accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior as a young child, and her faith was a guiding light throughout her life.

Dawn's life was one of dedication and service. Her commitment to her country was marked by her 14 years of service in the U.S. Army, where she was stationed at notable locations such as Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort Lee, Virginia, Kaiserslautern, Germany, Kuwait, Hawaii, and Fort Riley, Kansas. Dawn also held a special assignment as a culinary specialist at the Pentagon, showcasing her diverse talents. After her medical retirement, she went on to achieve her associate's degree and worked as a civil servant for over 20 years, eventually transitioning to the position of Management and Program Assistant on Fort Riley, Kansas, for the Installation Maintenance Division/Army Field Support Battalion-Riley.

Throughout her life, Dawn brought joy to her family by celebrating special holidays and creating unforgettable memories. She took great pride in her role as a loving wife, devoted mother, and doting "Noni" to her grandchildren. She had the immense joy of marrying the love of her life, Leo Meadows, on March 7, 2001, which beautifully blended their families. Dawn is lovingly remembered by her husband, Leo Meadows; daughters Margarita Caraway (married to James Caraway) and A'jia Hamlin; sons Jamaal Trotter and Alex Meadows; and her cherished grandchildren Malaya, Maya, Nataliyah, Aslan, Nile, and Affinity. She is also survived by her siblings, Vivian Proff of North Carolina and Ronald Trotter of Texas, and her "sister-cousins" Shelia Gothard, of North Carolina, Sheray Manuel and Sheletha Manuel, both of Michigan; along with a host of family and friends who will miss her dearly.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Vera Mae Trotter and Al Ford, as well as her beloved aunt and uncle, Sadie Manuel and Henry Manuel, who lovingly raised her in Paw Paw, Michigan.

Colleen Marie Budenbender of St. George, Kansas, passed away on her 98th birthday, September 3, 2025, at Via Christi Village in Manhattan surrounded by the love of her family. Colleen was born on September 3, 1927, in Joplin, Missouri, to parents Jesse and Twila (Stribling) Dodson. She married Franklyn Cline Burrow in 1944 in Galena, Kansas; he preceded her in death in 1973. 

Two children came from this union: Haddie and Frank. Colleen married Everett Budenbender in 1975 in Wamego; he preceded her in death in 2007. Colleen was known for her unwavering dedication to her family and community. She served as a general worker at the Aggieville Grocery in Manhattan, which was operated by her late husband's father, until its closure. However, her most cherished role was that of a lifelong homemaker. With a nurturing spirit, she provided delicious meals and a warm home, where she lovingly cared for her children and pets. 

Colleen held various interests that enriched the lives of those around her. She was a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Pottawatomie County Blackjack 4-H Youth Club, and the St. George Family, Community, and Education organization. Her creativity flourished through quilting, ceramics, and painting. Colleen had a special bond with her daughter, whom she taught to quilt. She had a green thumb and loved planting flowers, involving her children in gardening activities, and making plum jelly from the fruits of their plum trees. Even after turning 98, she continued to embroider until an unfortunate accident left her with a broken arm. 

Colleen's affection for animals was evident in her care for the family's pets, both cats and dogs, as well as her endearing practice of feeding local deer and watching hummingbirds. Colleen is survived by her children, Haddie Kiernan and Frank Burrow (Rita); and her grandchildren, Sean, Jarrod, Megan, Aaron, and Matthew. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Joyce Ramona Glasson passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, in Parker, Colorado. She was 95 years old and a lifelong resident of Wamego, Kansas, spending her final years at Morning Star Memory Center.

Born Joyce Lintz on December 23, 1929, to Delta Esther Cordts and Julius John Lintz of Wamego, she was later adopted by Alfred Emol Heiger of Manhattan, Kansas, after he married Delta in 1934. Joyce married Dennis Glasson Jr. on September 9, 1952, and was preceded in death by him on August 14, 1988.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Jo D. Clepper (Frank); two granddaughters, Eire Colleen of North Carolina and Sophie Josette at home; and her sister, Jeanette Ann Cantwell of Overland Park. She was preceded in death by her sister, Yvonne Esther Winchester.

Joyce graduated from Wamego High School in 1947. She began working at age 17 with W.C. Holtman Truck and Tractor, later joining Ford Motor Company and then Morton Motor Company, where she worked for 30 years before retiring at age 72.

She was active in Eastern Star, Tin Lizzies of Manhattan, served as a Girl Scout Leader, and was a member of the Business &amp; Professional Women’s Club. Joyce loved her home and caring for pets, a passion that remained strong even through her journey with dementia. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling, cruises, and attending hot air balloon festivals with her sisters and friends. Despite the challenges of dementia, she remained a favorite resident, known for her positive attitude, radiant smile, and warm hugs and kisses.

Her heavenly journey now begins, restored to youth, regaining her voice and mobility. “Mom, hug all your pets on the rainbow bridge, and never forget how much I love you.”

A celebration of life social hour will be held on Sunday (September 21, 2025) from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

A graveside service for family and close friends will be Monday (September 22, 2025) at 10:30 am in the Wamego City Cemetery.

Gisela Sigrid (Lemke) Tidd was born to Kurt and Hedwig Lemke in 1942 in the Sudetenland in what is now the Czech Republic, then grew up in Stuttgart, Germany.&nbsp;

Gisela married Charles Tidd, who was stationed in Stuttgart with the US Army. They had been legally separated for many years. After moving back and forth between Germany and the US, she ultimately settled down in Kansas in 1978.&nbsp;

Gisela had three children Michael (Tamara) Tidd Hutchinson, KS, Martin (Janice) Tidd Herington, KS and Steven (Danielle) Oklahoma City, OK. Gisela also had five grandchildren and was especially proud of her grandson Steven (Erica) Jennett of Gallatin, TN.&nbsp;

Gisela was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1971 and remained faithful unto the end. Gisela was convinced that she would be resurrected into eternal life so did not fear death.&nbsp;

Gisela was employed at the North Central Foundry until it closed, then worked doing custodial work at many businesses and county offices. Ultimately Gisela worked in the Register of Deeds office under three different Registers of Deeds. She retired from that position after 29 years of service.&nbsp;

Gisela was preceded in death by her parents Kurt and Hedwig Lemke, older brother Folker Lemke, younger brother Juergen Lemke, and older sister Helfride (Lemke) Manning, and granddaughter Jennifer Milhon-Tidd. Gisela spent the last month of her life at home with son Martin and Daughter-in-law Janice surrounded by many friends and family. Gisela chose direct cremation so there will be no ceremony or internment.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Friends of Animals Rescue of Junction City, Kansas.

Brian G. Gaston, 61, passed away due to chronic health conditions on August 3, 2025 at Meadowbrook South in Gardner, KS with loved ones by his side. A private celebration of life for family and close friends will be held in Ottawa, KS, at a later date.

Brian was born April 8, 1964, in Junction City, KS to Russell Gaston, Jr. and Carol Gaston (Gardner). Brian had two siblings from this marriage who currently reside in Oregon, his sister Lori Robertson and brother, Kevin Gaston (wife Dee). Russell and Carol later divorced. Russell remarried later to Carolyn Gaston (Mann). This joining of families brought the addition of two additional brothers Robert Witt (wife Mary Jane), of Junction City, KS and Bradley Witt, of Nebraska. All nine of his nieces and nephews referred to him as “Uncle B”, a name he took pride in. After moving around some in his younger days while living with his mom, Brian returned to Junction City with his father and graduated from Junction City High School.

Brian liked to try new things and changed career paths several times. He worked many years in grocery management, mechanical work, and warehouse management, just to name a few. Brian was a great cook who loved entertaining others. He enjoyed working with his hands on both big and small projects, but he found his greatest joy in the outdoors. He loved to golf, fish, hunt, camp, boat, and ride dirt bikes and ATVs. He was happiest when he got to share these adventures with his son.

In 1996, Brian married Shannon Gaston (Gillespie) and they welcomed their son Hunter Russell Gaston in 2003. He was so very proud of his son and all his accomplishments. Hunter also graduated from Junction City High School in 2021 and currently works as an EMT/Firefighter in Junction City. Brian and Shannon divorced in 2005.

Brian later met Donna Guilfoyle, his partner of 17 years. With open arms he welcomed Donna’s two sons, Richard Guilfoyle (wife Stephanie) and Joshua Guilfoyle (wife Amanda). Brian enjoyed spending time with their children as well; Colson (wife Grace), Cylar, Toni, Jamie, and Evelyn. This extended family all reside in Ottawa, KS, where a celebration of life gathering will be taking place.

Brian was proceeded in death by his mother, Carol Gaston, and his father, Russell Gaston, Jr.

Gwen Harshbarger, age 87, passed away at Wellsprings of Westmoreland on September 1st, 2025.

Born Gwendolyn Blanche Ashcraft to Chloe Ashcraft Hitz and Martin H. Ashcraft on January 8, 1938, in Englewood, Kansas, Gwen lived most of her young life in Englewood and graduated from high school in 1955.

From there, she ventured to Alva, Oklahoma, and Northwestern Oklahoma State University, where she quickly met the love of her life, John “Spike” Harshbarger. Born to them were three children, Alan, Scott, and Lynda. Spike and Gwen were blessed with six grandchildren: Bret, Maci, Ryan, Jory, Layne, and Landon.

Gwen worked several jobs throughout her life, but she favored and loved her 23 years spent at Balderson, Inc. in Wamego.

She loved everything about the sport of bowling and cherished her time with her “bowling buds.” She loved to read, cook, play cards, and spend time with her family. She carried and demonstrated a kind heart and loving disposition throughout her wonderful life.

Gwen was preceded in death by her mother, father, two sisters, Nancy and Norma, and one brother, Melvin. She lost Spike in 2011.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Alan and Janell, Scott and Kathy, and Lynda and Dave, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two sisters-in-law, Alfreda Harshbarger Dougherty and Wilma Harshbarger Moore.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Gwen will lie in state beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Robert Fredrick (Bob) Daily, 93, was born July 6, 1932, near Logan, Oklahoma to Archie and Nellie Anderson Daily, during the height of the Dust Bowl years. He went to be with the Lord on July 23, 2025, in Abilene, Kansas, surrounded by his family. The loss of our family patriarch has been a profound experience. He was our pillar of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love. We write this to honor his memory.

Bob spent his childhood in the panhandle of Texas, the oldest of five siblings. The Daily family worked hard during the Dust Bowl years. Bob’s entertainment was watching the steam engine trains pass by, leading to a lifelong passion with trains. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, earning a Purple Heart. Bob graduated from Kansas State University in 1957 and spent his career as a teacher and football coach. He impacted the lives of countless students, many who considered him a mentor and kept in touch throughout his life. He married Ruth Pierce in Kansas in 1953 and they had two children, James Bennett (Ben) and Marcia Colleen. He later married Carmen Raval Breeler in California in 1967 and from this union came four daughters- Barbara Sue, Brenda Lynn, Cynthia Lee, and Teresa Ann. His children and their families were his number one priority and he attended every special event in their lives.

Bob spent his retirement years traveling the country to visit his beloved family, earning him the nickname “Okie Rover”. Many remember the camera permanently hanging from his neck, capturing memories to share with his many friends and family on Facebook. Bob was a sports enthusiast, realizing its unique power to teach positive values. The California Angels and Kansas City Royals were his baseball teams and many a Father’s Day was spent at a Royals game. His final years were spent on his son Ben’s farm in Kansas, with frequent visits from his daughters and many relatives. Bob, Ben, and Francis were lovingly known as “The Three Daily Bachelors,” living the dream on the family farm.

Bob was preceded in death by his daughters Barbara Daily Evans, Brenda Daily Wentling, and Teresa Daily Allen. He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter Tawnee Bubak, great-grandson Creeden Bubak; sister, Beverly Dutcher, and brothers Darvin Jack Dailey and William (Bill) Dailey. Bob is survived by his sister Darlene Folks; sister-in-law Donna Dailey; his children Ben Daily, Solomon, Kansas; Marcia (Frank) Bubak, Olathe, Kansas, Cynthia (Michael) Alexander, Ludowici, Georgia; 15 grandchildren: Angela, Samantha, Alexandra, Sarah, Trevor, Mary, Austin, Derrick, Megan, Margaret, Francis, Katherine, Jacqueline, Maelyn, Macyn; 11 great-grandchildren: Ashley, Avree, Alexis, Jaynee, Jayana, Caliber, Madelyn, Thea, Levi, Alice, Lily; 5 great-great grandchildren: Kaison, Grace, Oakley, Jaelyn, Jordyn. To those many grandchildren he is “Gpa” (thanks Sami for the special nickname). He said his grandchildren are his best friends.

Although Bob’s physical presence may no longer grace our lives, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us.
