Brian S. Johnston, 59, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on October 4, 2024, at Good Shepherd Hospice House. Cremation has taken place and a family led celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Brian was born on October 16, 1964. He grew up on his grandparent's farm raising both cattle and crops. He spent his life with his soul-mate, Barbara Van Erstvelde and lived in Geary County for over 20 years.

Brian had many careers over the years, the most recent was working on plumbing out of Junction City. He was a handyman throughout most of his life and helped many people because of his skills.

Brian is survived by his loving mother, Sheryl Bennett; one brother Dennis Allen; his aunt and uncle, Kenneth and Roxie Johnston; two cousins, Melisa Burgess and Shelli Cammisa and a his two best friends, Ed Lazear and Dianna. Bruce Hauser, the founder and frontman of Bruce Hauser and the Sawmill Creek Band, passed away peacefully at his home on October 12, 2023, at the age of 74 with his daughter by his side.&nbsp;

Born and raised at Ft. Riley, Junction City and Manhattan, Kansas, Bruce graduated high school in Junction City and attended K-State in Manhattan, Kansas and Sheridan College in Wyoming. Bruce’s love for music was evident from an early age, first learning to play the accordion as a kid and later becoming a master guitar and banjo player. He began singing and playing guitar in Manhattan – including a duet with friend Max Pfrang; in a band called The Stepping Stones in 1967 with Mike Lacer, Luis Acevedo, Ron, Mike Russ, and Bill Glenn; in a band that drove to gigs in a hearse; and playing a solo called “The Poor Boy” - but he longed to move to the mountain west. He started that journey in Colorado Springs in 1973 forming a band called Ironstone and then in early 1974, he formed Sawmill Creek in Wyoming. Bruce remained the constant in the band, including a brief stint as “Bruce and The Flamingos,” but the roster of members and studio musicians evolved over the decades – please see sawmillcreekband.com for all the amazing musicians Bruce has worked with.

Although based out of Jackson, Wyoming for nearly 3 decades and playing many gigs throughout the mountain west, Bruce Hauser and The Sawmill Creek Band also headlined all over the US, as well as tours throughout Europe. Sawmill Creek, which quickly became a cornerstone of the country music scene in the western states in the early 70’s, was renowned for Bruce's evocative storytelling, and good old ‘boot scootin’ fun.

The band garnered a devoted fanbase throughout the years, and many a night – in Jackson Hole at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, The Wort Hotel’s Silver Dollar Bar; in Cody at the Bronze Boot; in Casper at The Beacon; just to name a few - was packed to the gills in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s with Sawmill fans listening and dancing to their favorite band. Bruce’s mom (who was a house mother for the Acacia Fraternity in Manhattan), dad (who was in the army for 22 years and was stationed at Ft. Riley and later worked at Johnson Brother’s furniture in Junction City and owned a store called F.A.S.T. in Coffeyville), brother Mark (who graduated from Manhattan, attended K-State and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 39 years) and family often drove to see him play; daughter Shannan often spent weeks in the summer on the road with him and the band.

During his music career, Bruce wrote hundreds of original songs and published at least 8 albums. His songwriting, characterized by its lyrical depth and authenticity, touched on themes of love, loss, the beauty of Wyoming and the mountains and wilderness he loved so much. Bruce called it Rocky Mountain Music.

Under Bruce's leadership, the Sawmill Creek Band released a series of acclaimed albums and singles, including fan favorites like Wild Western Windblown Band, Barely Gettin' By, Cold Wyoming Snow and Grandma Shoes, a song about his maternal grandmother (born Eva Graham in Kansas in 1879) who wore the old-time lace up boots that fascinated him.

In 1981, "BARELY GETTIN' BY," broke into the top 100 on Billboard Magazine's Hot Country Singles Chart. In 1983, "SWINDLER OF FEELINGS" became a nationally charted single. CROSS COUNTRY was named one of the Top 10 Country Albums of the Year by Critic's Choice - Billboard Magazine in 1985. "I JUST CAME BACK" made it into the Billboard Top 100 charts and stayed there for six weeks, reaching No. 70 on the list. In 1986, "SOMETHIN' OLD FASHIONED" was named #6 Critic's Choice in Billboard Magazine with a review that stated: "The lyrics are exquisitely wrought and impeccably sung." Also in 1986, "BIDDING AMERICA GOODBYE" became a critically acclaimed, nationally charted Billboard Top 100 single.

Bruce's first songs were rock and roll and if not for Shannan’s maternal grandfather, he might not have gone country! At the start of his career, Bruce’s father-in-law was Gerald Roberts – a Twice All-Around World Champion Rodeo Cowboy. Each time Bruce would play a song, Gerald would say with a grin, “Don’t you know any good cowboy songs?” Bruce said of Gerald, “he was one of the finest men I’ve ever known” and he promptly started expanding his playlist to include country. In the late 60s in Strong City, Kansas, at the Flint Hills Rodeo, Gerald’s sister-in-law, Jo Roberts (who was married to 3-time bull riding champion Ken Roberts), taught Bruce one of his first country songs – The Long Black Veil. Later in his career, Bruce wrote a song called “Echo of an Old Man’s Last Ride” that was in part about his rodeo cowboy father-in-law, and in part about his friend and backcountry guide, Rod Doty.

During his long career, Bruce saw the evolution of music formats from vinyl to 8-track tapes to cassettes to CDs and now streaming, and he has released music on every version! He was thrilled to have his music on streaming platforms and in 2020, released a streaming-only album called “Songs Along The Way.”

After being on the road for the better part of 3 decades, Bruce longed for a stationary home life. He began working in the RV industry in Oregon and The Coachella Valley and once again, made lasting friendships. In the last 20 years, Bruce played occasional gigs in Wyoming and Montana. Daughter Shannan would often accompany him, staying in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks between shows. The last time Bruce performed on stage was 9/11/22 at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole with many of his musician friends for a Celebration of Life for his late wife, Linda "Bubbles" Willis Hauser.

Beyond his musical achievements, Bruce was a very sentimental, spiritual, kind and funny soul. He had an inherently quick-witted sense of humor and a knack for "thinking outside the box,” which lent itself well to becoming a singer/songwriter. A treasured guitar was always at his fingertips, and he often wrote lyrics down for later creative writing sessions. Not surprisingly, he was a Scrabble-loving, crossword puzzle guru.

He had a taste for the finer things in life and was a meticulous "doer" who was always working on upgrading, cleaning, or creating something. He kept his house in tip-top shape and would spend an entire day washing every window inside and out after one smudge on a window got him going. He was a truck guy through and through. His first truck was a ‘30 Model A. He got a loan at age 13 for $75 and had to put it together. He recently had a '67 Chevy that he restored and a 2020 model that he "souped" up to the hilt.

Bruce was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed back-country camping, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, and scuba diving. He was a gentle soul and an animal lover who always had a cherished dog by his side.

Born "Walter Bruce Hauser" July 7, 1949, at Fort Riley, Kansas, to Wilma Maxine (Walter) Hauser and William “Bill” Edward Hauser, Bruce was a beloved son, father, brother, husband and friend. He married Kasey Dawn Roberts in 1968 and had a daughter Shannan. He married Linda “Bubbles” Willis in Jackson, Wyoming in 1981. “Bubbles” traveled with Bruce and the band and became a fixture in the band’s history. Bruce spent the last two decades taking excellent care of his ailing Bubbles after she had cancer in 1998 and then several strokes.

Later in life, Bruce discovered that his biological father was Martin McGuire, and this unlocked a treasure-trove of new Irish relatives and the discovery that Martin and many others in the family were also musically and artistically inclined.

&nbsp; Richard (Dick) Alvin Millner passed away at the age of 82 on September 28, 2024 in Abilene, KS. He was born to Alvin and Dorothy Millner on March 4, 1942 in San Antonio, TX. Richard graduated from W.B. Ray High School in 1960. He worked on the oil rigs in South Texas and had various retail jobs in his younger years before moving to Abilene, KS in 1975 to work for Duckwall, Alco as an electronics buyer. He retired in 2000 to pursue his hobbies of golﬁng, riding his motorcycle, and working in his woodshop. Richard was also an avid reader, enjoying westerns and many other genres.

Richard married Lynda Millican in 1961 and to that union three children, Adam, Jill and David were born. On October 6, 1990 Richard married Marita Horan McAsey and he gained three more daughters, Camille, Tamara and Jennifer.

Richard had many hobbies and interests, but he enjoyed family most of all. He was proud of all of his children and grandchildren, their spouses and his great grandchildren. He loved family traditions and instilled that love in his family who will continue to honor those traditions in their own lives. His stories of growing up in South Texas were enjoyed by his children and grandchildren, and those stories are sure to be re-told for generations to come.

&nbsp;Carolyn (Carol) E. Wright was born March 26, 1948 in Junction City, Kansas the daughter of Luther H. and Theora E. (Adolph) Brumbalow. She passed away Thursday, September 19, 2024 at the Enterprise Estates Nursing Home in Enterprise, Kansas. Carol enjoyed crafts, quilting, crocheting, playing bingo, gardening, making jewelry, painting, and raising pigs.

On January 22, 1968 she was united in marriage to Kenneth C. Wright. He passed away May 26, 2018.Carolyn is survived by her daughter Lisa Gasswint and her husband Roy of Abilene, son Kevin Wright of Abilene, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Besides her husband, Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Wayne.

Graveside services for Carolyn will be 2:00 pm Friday, October 25, 2024 at the Mt. Hope Cemetery near Enterprise with Pastor Stan Norman officiating. &nbsp;Carolyn (Carol) E. Wright was born March 26, 1948 in Junction City, Kansas the daughter of Luther H. and Theora E. (Adolph) Brumbalow. She passed away Thursday, September 19, 2024 at the Enterprise Estates Nursing Home in Enterprise, Kansas. Carol enjoyed crafts, quilting, crocheting, playing bingo, gardening, making jewelry, painting, and raising pigs.On January 22, 1968 she was united in marriage to Kenneth C. Wright. He passed away May 26, 2018.Carolyn is survived by her daughter Lisa Gasswint and her husband Roy of Abilene, son Kevin Wright of Abilene, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Besides her husband, Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Wayne.Graveside services for Carolyn will be 2:00 pm Friday, October 25, 2024 at the Mt. Hope Cemetery near Enterprise with Pastor Stan Norman officiating. Shirley Mae (Miller) Williams, age 94, of Manhattan, KS, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving children on September 26th, 2024, at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan. Beloved Mother to her four children: Debi (John) Hensley of Overland Park, KS; Scott Williams of Topeka, KS; Shari (Jim) Hoy of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Steve (Ann) Williams of Manhattan, KS. Passing on her kind and loving spirit to her 8 grandchildren known to them as Gram/Grammy: Michael Williams, Adam (Helen) Hensley, Lauren (Greg) Jarrell, Whitney Rashid, Bryce Williams, Ryan Williams, Evan Williams, and Lily (Jason) Hoy-Cohen. Her warm hugs will be missed and always remembered by her 8 great grandchildren: Jack and Emma Hensley, Olivia and Miller Jarrell, Mia and Elliot Rashid, and Kai and Cade Cohen. They will carry on the legacy of love for their sweet GiGi. Together we all rejoice in her 94 years of loving and caring. She was a “Bloom where you were planted” kind of woman and she leaves a legacy of love, strength, and kindness.

Shirley was born May 5th, 1930, in Winside, Nebraska. Her parents moved to Norfolk, Nebraska when she was around 2 yrs old. She was a lifelong Lutheran who began her education at Christ Lutheran School. Her German Grandmother and Mother taught her the fine art of baking which became a passion of Shirley’s. Her four children have yummy memories of all of the cookies, pastries, and donuts she made year-round for family and friends, but especially the assortment at Christmas time.

Faith and food were our Mother’s LOVE Language which her family and friends were so grateful to be the recipients of. Her children credit her for teaching them the power of prayer. Our mother always began and ended every meal with prayer, and you did not go to bed without saying your prayers. As we grew into adults and left home, whenever you talked to her on the phone, her last words were, do not forget your prayers.

One of Shirleys passions was playing the Piano and singing and we were all entertained by her at the piano playing Clair de Lune up until even just a few years ago. Shirley graduated from Norfolk High School and then attended Norfolk Junior College where she graduated in 1950 with an Associate degree in Education. She enjoyed singing with a “Madrigal group” that toured in a number of cities in Nebraska and taught for 6 months in Cambridge, NE before moving back to Norfolk and marrying her sweetheart, Jim Williams. She then taught at the same school she attended as a child, Christ Lutheran School. Shirley and Jim started their family growing to four and eventually moving to Dodge City, Kansas until 3 of the four left for College (Kansas State University). When the last of three left KSU, Mom, Dad and Steve moved to Manhattan in 1977. They were very involved in the community, St. Lukes Lutheran Church, and Children’s Christian Concern Society. July 1999 Mom was awarded a certificate in recognition of her service in the government as she did civil service testing for government jobs. She became a Certified Volunteer Long-Term Care Ombudsman by the Kansas Department on Aging 8.27.97 at the age of 67.

Despite the challenges of raising 4 children, Mom always made time for bridge. Dad was her favorite bridge partner, and they played in many clubs. We think this passion was a close one right behind baking.

There are simply no words to describe the happiness and love our mom exuded. As diﬃcult as it is to watch your dear Mother with dementia, she never lost her happy spirit. As one family member put it, she would light up when we walked in the room and her laugh and loving smile made you feel her love and joy instantly. Even when she struggled with words, she never lost the ability to pray.

The last 5 years of her life were at The Honstead House at Meadowlark where our father also spent the last part of his life. Our Mother and her family were so blessed by the tender love and care everyone gave our mom.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents Elsie Frieda (Riggert) Miller, and Winfred Augustav Miller, brother Wallace “Wally” Miller and loving husband and bridge partner, James Hollingsworth “Jim” Williams of 66 years.

Kristine Fletcher, known to most as Kris, was born in Mississauga, Ontario on February 15, 1965 to her loving parents Jack Fletcher and Patricia O’Donoghue. Kris was the youngest of her four sisters Sharon, Lynda, and Jacquie, who she loved dearly.

After graduating from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, Kris pursued a career in optometry, which moved her to Houston, Texas. There she met her life partner, husband, and the love of her life Rick Schroeder.

Kris and Rick were married in Brantford, Ontario, the town where she was raised on March 27, 1993. They moved to Manhattan, Kansas, where they began their careers as optometrists and started their family.

Kris was an accomplished optometrist who cared deeply for her patients, and whose patients cared (if possible, even more) deeply for her. She spent her career working part time so she could spend her time with what she cared most about–her family.

Kris was a devoted mother who put her family above all. She was the mother of three children, Alaina, Jackson, and Cooper, who she loved immensely. Kris also loved creating a home. She made her home warm and inviting to all, especially to her family. She was a talented baker, avid reader, Kansas sports fan, and had an incredible eye for fashion and interior design.

In the spring of 2023, Kris was given the unforeseen diagnosis of lung cancer. She bravely fought this impossible new reality alongside her family with extreme strength, grace, and dignity. On September 26, 2024, Kris passed away with her family by her side. She left behind a room without pain, filled only with love. She will be so profoundly missed.

Memorial services will be held in her honor on October 11, 2024 at 2:00p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue. Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Kristine Fletcher

Rex Roland Boatman, 89, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 25th in his home.

Rex was born in Norton, Kansas on October 14th, 1934, the youngest child of nine of the late George Finn, Sr. and Flora (Armstrong) Finn. He and his older sister, the late June Maaske, were then adopted by the late Dewey and Wilma (Wills) Boatman. Growing up on the family farm in Logan County, Kansas, Rex reported that he dutifully did his chores before breakfast each morning before “walking to school uphill both ways,” which is how he developed his lifelong love and respect for farming, the great outdoors, and wildlife conservation.

After graduating from high school, Rex enrolled at Kansas State University to study education, but often went back home to help out on the farm. On one of those occasions, he met his eventual wife of 69 years, Coralie (Castle) Boatman. As described by their close friends, they were immediately the “it” couple of the town, and after a year of dating, married on August 28th, 1955.

Rex graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Education, and began teaching at Lee Elementary School in Manhattan, Kansas while finishing his Masters of Science in Education a few years later. As a teacher and principal for USD 383 for almost 40 years, Rex touched the lives of thousands of students, working at every elementary school in Manhattan with the exception of Northview and Marlatt. His career was made a full circle when he retired in 1993 where he began, at Lee Elementary School.

But Rex’s influence on kids didn’t stop with the school bell — he and Coralie had two of their own, Rene and Rick. As a father, Rex loved spending time passing on his outdoorsman skills and hard work ethic to the two, taking them fishing and hunting, teaching them gun safety, and showing them which tool was right for the job — and, those tools better be cleaned properly and put back in their rightful home. :)

After retirement, Rex dedicated himself to charity work, ramping up his time volunteering for Masonic Lafayette Lodge 16, the Scottish Rite, and the Shriners. He was also a member of the Riley County Fish and Game Association, the Kansas Wildlife Federation, and was a Staff Sergeant Medic E6 in the Kansas National Guard.

Those closest to him, who called him Rexy, will always remember him saying “I think it's tea-time”, his insatiable love of fruit jelly on both things that should and should not have jelly on them, and as a tenacious reader with an encyclopedic brain who would become obsessed with random subjects like native prairie grasses or Smith &amp; Wesson revolvers, read absolutely every book about it he could get his hands on from the public library, then ask you to coffee to tell you all about it.

His grandchildren, who called him Pop, will always remember him slipping them mini snickers from the secret can downstairs, overseeing them as they “picked the pinkies” from the backyard, his Rex-isms while playing Pitch after Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, his terrible luck with spyware on laptops, and ringing the doorbell like clockwork during the middle of nap time to check on something random like where the cast iron skillet was for his annual Fourth of July Chuckwagon Breakfast.

Rex is survived by his wife, Coralie of the home and children Rene Boatman (Ziad Dalaimi) of Lawrenceville, New Jersey and Rick Boatman (Theresa Boatman) of Manhattan, Kansas. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Erica Boatman of Florence, Italy; Maggie Reed of Watertown, New York; Sara Boatman of Manhattan, Kansas; and Emily Boatman of Kansas City, Missouri; as well as three great grandchildren: Liam Reed, Aiden Reed, and Emilia Reed. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Wilma Boatman, and his sister, June Maaske.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 4th at 10:30 am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Margaret McGhee, followed by a reception with refreshments in the church basement hall.

Jimmie (Jim) Dean Cranford, 90, Manhattan, Kansas, died peacefully September 25, 2024, at Via Christi Village in Manhattan, Kansas.

Born in Pleasant Hills, Oklahoma, February 15, 1934, to Early and Gertrude (Elliot) Cranford, Jim was the youngest of twelve children. Later, due to hardships in the family, he lived with a few of his older siblings and graduated from Roff High School, Roff, Oklahoma in 1951 where he excelled in sports, especially basketball and baseball. After graduation, he attended the Santa Fe Railroad School in Pueblo, Colorado. His first railroad job was as an agent at the depot in Holly, Colorado.

On February 15, 1954, he married Altha Rae Davis and was drafted one month later by the United States Army to serve as a radio operator in Germany for two years (1954-1956). After Jim's return, he worked again as a depot agent for the Santa Fe Railroad in small towns across southeast Colorado and southwest Kansas until he retired in 1986.

Jim and Altha were blessed with three boys, Curt (1957), David (1958) and Greg (1960). Jim enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball, Babe Ruth Baseball, and American Legion Baseball as the boys grew up. He also spent his time renovating old homes, going to auctions, fishing, square dancing, and watching his sons participate in a variety of sports.

In 2006, Jim and Altha moved to Manhattan, Kansas, to be closer to some of the family. They attended Westview Community Church and volunteered in the nursery. He loved spending time with his seven grandkids and ten great grandkids. Later, in 2013, Jim suffered a debilitating stroke. Although tragic, he gave his life fully to the Lord at that time and shared before his death, "I'm going home to heaven, and I'll see you there!"

Jim is survived by his wife, Altha; son Curt (Amy), Tomball, Texas; son David (Alva), Carrollton, Texas; and son Greg (Donna), Manhattan, Kansas; grandchildren Ed (Katie) Cranford, Jesse Cranford, Bryan (Tori) Cranford, Meg (Forest Amos) Cranford, Kirsten (Kris) Morrison, Kelsey (Zach) Anderson, and Courtney (Ki) Shield; great grandchildren Elizabeth and Faith Cranford, Rilynn, Declan, and Rosalyn Cranford, Ryleigh, Quinn, and Eliza Morrison, and Calum and Ellis Anderson.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday October 7, 2024 at the Westview Community Church, 615 Gillespie in Manhattan.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday October 8, 2024 at the Westview Community Church.

Michael “Mike-Mike” Smith, of Junction City and Manhattan Kansas passed away unexpectedly on September 2nd, 2024 at the age of 50.  Born on November 3rd, 1973 to Brenda Smith in Junction City, KS, Michael was known for being quiet and strong willed. He attended Junction City High School and enjoyed listening to music, and break dancing. Michael is survived by his children Preston Goodman of Texas, and Xiomaria Young of Florida; two brothers Anthony Smith and Raschon Smith; and many loving uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. Michael was preceded in death&nbsp; by his mother, Brenda Smith; grandfather Silas Smith; and grandmother Willie Mae Smith.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday October 5th at the Junction City VFW Post 8773, 1215 S Washington St, Junction City, KS from 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM.

Born on November 3rd, 1973 to Brenda Smith in Junction City, KS, Michael was known for being quiet and strong willed. He attended Junction City High School and enjoyed listening to music, and break dancing. Michael is survived by his children Preston Goodman of Texas, and Xiomaria Young of Florida; two brothers Anthony Smith and Raschon Smith; and many loving uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. Debbie was born April 24, 1967, in Junction City, Kansas the daughter of Joyce Gappa. Debbie spent many years living in Amarillo, Texas. In Amarillo, she worked at a waitress for Cattleman's Restaurant. She also worked as a Certified Nurses Aide. Debbie also was the head of maintenance and housekeeping for a long term care facility in St. Joe, Texas where she lived before she moved back to Junction City, Kansas.

On July 17, 1985, she married John Hogan in Amarillo, Texas. Debra is survived by her husband John; two daughters, Amber Hogan of Maricopa, Arizona and Ashley Hogan of Junction City, Kansas; four sisters, Caren Tumlin, Linda Walker, Bonnie Moore and Pamela Clayton; six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother; one brother, Mitchell Johnson; one sister, Joyce Harley; one daughter, Amanda Hogan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; SFC (Ret.) Paul C. Wagner, 68, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on September 24, 2024, at Valley View Senior Life Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 16, 1955, to Spaniard Jr., and Betty (Cravens) Butler in Kansas City, Missouri. 

While growing up in Arkansas, he worked on his father's farm during the summers. This taught him the importance of hard work which he carried throughout his life. Paul graduated from High School in the year 1977. Immediately after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in many military conflicts throughout his enlistment. He served his country honorably up to his retirement in 1994. Full military honors will be rendered during his graveside service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery.

Into retirement, Paul enjoyed spending his time in nature. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. Paul made sure to teach the importance of nature to his family by taking them fishing and camping while they were growing up. 

Paul was a provider and a protector of his family and friends. He is survived by his three children, DaTanya Wagner of Kansas City, Missouri, Paul Wagner of Kansas City, Missouri, and Monica Wagner-Walker; twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two dogs, Nino and Doodlebug and a host of other loving family and friends. Paul was preceded in death by his loving parents; his wife, Debara; several siblings and one grandchild, Kaleel Wagner.

&nbsp; Ray Millard Kamphaus, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away peacefully at home on September 22, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on July 6, 1947, in Junction City, Kansas, Ray was the beloved son of Donald and Mary Ellen Kamphaus.

Ray was a man who lived his life with passion, integrity, and an unyielding dedication to his family and community. He attended Saint Xavier’s Catholic School, graduating in 1966, and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country as part of the Navy Seabees during the Vietnam War

Ray's career as a master electrician showcased his skill and dedication. For many years, he owned and operated his own successful business, earning respect from clients and friends. His work was marked by precision, reliability, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. On December 16, 1972, Ray married the love of his life, Susan, in a union that would span over fifty years. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared countless cherished moments. Ray is survived by his devoted wife Susan; daughters Jessica Ruble and her husband Jeff Ruble, Erica Kamphaus, and Vanessa Kamphaus. He was the proud grandfather of three grandchildren: Arianna Bowser, Gavin Ruble and Stella Ruble.

Ray was a man of many interests and talents. A passionate golfer who could often be found on the course at Rolling Meadows Golf Course, where he was a valued member of The Friends of Rolling Meadows Golf Course. Ray also loved cheering on the K-State Wildcats, hosting legendary tailgates that brought friends and family together for food, fun, and camaraderie. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and The Elks, contributing his time and energy to these organizations with his characteristic generosity.

Music, dancing, and celebrations were at the heart of Ray's spirit. He was known for his love of storytelling and jokes, bringing laughter and joy to every gathering. His vibrant personality and infectious enthusiasm left a lasting impression on everyone he met. &nbsp; Kiola Marie Ryks (née Kell), 70, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2024, in Olathe, Kansas. Born on March 2, 1954, in Fort Riley, Kansas, Kiola spent her early years moving around a bit. Some of the places she lived as a child included Aschaffenburg, Germany; Ft Polk, LA; Fort Ord, CA; Baumholder, Germany; Fort Benning, GA and back to Fort Riley, KS. She graduated from Junction City High School in 1972.

Kiola's career was diverse and community-centered, reflecting her multifaceted skills and interests. She held various positions at Kaw and Colonial theaters in Junction City, where her love for the arts was evident. Her meticulous nature shone at McCall Pattern Company in Manhattan, KS, where she worked in pattern cutting. Her technical skills were further applied at Electrowire in Junction City, assembling wiring harnesses, and at Mobile Traveler, also in Junction City, where she crafted cabinets and later managed payroll and accounting. Her career also included roles at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service in Fort Riley, Russell Stovers Chocolates in Abilene, Bell Taxi in Junction City, and finally at Farmer's Insurance in Olathe, KS, where she worked as a claims adjuster.

Kiola was a kind-hearted and gentle soul who always looked for the positive in every situation. Described as sweet and kind, she was fiercely protective of her family, embodying the spirit of a 'mama bear' when it came to their safety. An animal lover at heart, Kiola especially had a soft spot for dogs, loving every one she met. Her warm, loving nature extended beyond her immediate family to her friends and community members.

Kiola is survived by her devoted husband, Larry Ryks; sons, John (Christi) Vickers, Joey Vickers, and Kevin (Krystal) Vickers; stepchildren, David (Carina) Ryks and Mary Ryks; brothers, Dennis (Linda) Taylor and Donald (Vickie) Kell; sisters, Terry (Jeff) Hill and Tami Barnes; brothers-in-law Verlin, Dewey and Kelly Ryks; sister-in-law Janelle Ryks; uncle, Roy Glessner Jr.; 19 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. &nbsp; Phyllis Irene Kolling, age 95, of Chapman Kansas, passed away at Countryside, Abilene Kansas, September 15, 2024.

Phyllis was born on June 2, 1929, to Loren and Esther (Buhrer) Long at the family farm in rural Chapman. She attended Prairie Cottage Grade School. Phyllis then attended Dickinson County Community High School, graduating in 1947.On October 10, 1948, she married Henry Kolling. They had three children, Gary, Joleen, and Jana. They lived in the Upland and Chapman communities and farmed. Besides her work on the family farm, Phyllis worked at the Chapman State Bank and Kolling Pharmacy.

Phyllis enjoyed cooking and baking, sewing, and gardening; also playing bridge, pitch, rummy, dominoes and RACKO, with friends and family. Her skills with arts and crafts brought joy to those around her. She prepared crafts for the Bethany Church Bible School, Sunday School, and at the Chapman library. Her grandchildren always had a fun craft project to accomplish. She attended Sherman and Lakeside EHUs for most of her adult life, serving as an officer, committee member, and friend. 

Phyllis and Hank belonged to Buttons and Bows Square Dance group and Dickinson County Rural Life. They were active members of Bethany Church during their married life. Survivors include son Gary Kolling (Devra), rural Chapman; daughters Joleen Marsteller (Tom), Carmel, Indiana, and Jana McCandless (Kevin), Nesbit, Mississippi. Grandchildren are Cherilyn Hultz (Jason), Doug Marsteller (Nicole), Jackie Thompson (Scott), Anna Barth (Andy), Justin McCandless (Jan), Kai Glauber (Laura), Crystal Kolling (Maria), Kirstie Frey (David), and many loving great grandchildren. Other family survivors are sisters-in-law Edna Long, Linda Long, Dorothy Holsted, Shirley Owens, and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was preceded in death by loving husband Hank of 69 years, parents Loren and Esther Long, her two brothers, Max and Leland Long. WillieJean and her husband, Leonard, have resided in Manhattan for over 25 years. WillieJean was a clerk at the Menards Hardware store here in Manhattan.

Dr. Dean Vincent Armbrust died September 9, 2024, in Topeka, at the Stormont-Vail Health Center.

He was born May 13, 1938, in Ellsworth, KS to Arthur J. Armbrust and Olga Caroline Sophia Pflughoeft Armbrust. Dean received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Technical Agronomy from Kansas State in 1961 and a Master’s in Agronomy in 1962. He was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity while attending Kansas State. Dean received his Doctorate Degree from Kansas State University in 1973 in Agronomy with a Major in Soils and a Minor in Biochemistry. He retired in 2001 after 42 years as a Soil Scientist for the U.S.D.A.

Dean married Alice May Hunton, in June of 1961, at First Presbyterian Church in Salina, KS. They were married 63 years.

Dean is survived by his wife, Alice May Armbrust, of Manhattan, KS, his two sons:, Arthur Paul Armbrust of Kansas City, Andrew Dean Armbrust (Ginger), of Salina, KS, four grandchildren: Alexander Paul Armbrust ( Brooke) of Shawnee, KS, Andrew Peter Armbrust (Jessica) of Shawnee, KS, Paul Christopher Armbrust of Wichita, KS and Iliana Elizabeth Armbrust of Salina, KS; his sister, Carol Ann Fey (Alan) of Marietta, GA; and his many nieces and nephews.

He was a past Mason, member of First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, Sigma Xi, and Alpha Zeta. He regularly attended the Retired Agronomists Coffee and Presbyterian Men’s Bible Study.

Dean was an accomplished woodworker making many pieces of furniture for his son’s and grandchildren’s homes. He taught Sunday School for various Presbyterian churches for 54 years. He was a volunteer at Manhattan Breadbasket, where in 2014, he received the Dorothy McCutcheon Volunteer Award. He also volunteered as a counselor at Shepard’s Crossing for 20 years and the Presbyterian Food Pantry. He also served as the Cub Master for Troop 284 for many years. He loved to read, do lawn work, and attend his grandchildren’s activities.

Memorial Services for Mr. Armbrust will be at the First Presbyterian Church, 801 Leavenworth in Manhattan, on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Services will be livestreamed through the church YouTube page (YouTube/@firstpresmanhattan/streams).

Dr. Dean Vincent Armbrust died September 9, 2024, in Topeka, at the Stormont-Vail Health Center.He was born May 13, 1938, in Ellsworth, KS to Arthur J. Armbrust and Olga Caroline Sophia Pflughoeft Armbrust. Dean received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Technical Agronomy from Kansas State in 1961 and a Master’s in Agronomy in 1962. He was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity while attending Kansas State. Dean received his Doctorate Degree from Kansas State University in 1973 in Agronomy with a Major in Soils and a Minor in Biochemistry. He retired in 2001 after 42 years as a Soil Scientist for the U.S.D.A.Dean married Alice May Hunton, in June of 1961, at First Presbyterian Church in Salina, KS. &nbsp; Willie B. Patrick, 67, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 19, 2024, at New Church of the Living God with Bishop James E. Johnson officiating. A visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the Johnson and Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at Highland Cemetery.

Willie was born June 1, 1957 in Jackson, Tennessee the son of Floyd D. and Lidy Bell (Snipes) Patrick.Willie worked for Bayer Construction Company for many years operating paving equipment. Willie enjoyed fishing and working on cars. On May 23, 2003, he married Mary N. Woods.

Ruby M. Karmann, 95, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on September 15, 2024, in her home. &nbsp;&nbsp;Ruby was born on June 7, 1929, to &nbsp;Marion and Martha (Hartung) Lisle in Afton, Oklahoma. She was both a friend and family member to many in Junction City. Everyone she met was a dear friend, even if she did not know them very well. Many called her Mom or Miss Ruby. 

Ruby was often seen around town on her three-wheeled bicycle; then later on, her mobile scooter. She cared for many family members who needed care or help in their homes and until her Aunt Lilly passed away, she would go up to the retirement home and visit her each day. &nbsp;Ruby was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years where she also did much volunteer work. She helped clean the church and take care of the nursery and did many visitations with her beloved best friend, Madge Wright.

Ruby's volunteer work also extended outside of the church with her Scout programs. She was a Scout leader for many years and earned many awards for her participation helping to raise young boys into men. She would give her last dollar to someone in need, even if she did not know them. One time she was mugged and after he got the money she asked him why he was robbing her, and he told her he needed the money. That was enough for her to get the money from her shoe and give it to him cause she felt that he needed it more than her.

She was very proud of her Native American heritage and all her life wore her hair in two braids. She talked of it often to us kids so we could be proud of it too. Ruby helped raise several of her grandchildren or would take them into her home when they needed a place to go. It was not unusual in her 80's for people passing by the home to see her outside chopping wood or using a chainsaw &nbsp;for her wood burning stove or up on the roof trying to mend it. The Daily Union even printed a picture of her in the tree using her chainsaw.

loved her church and Jesus. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles on the computer or solitary until she lost her eyesight. She was always humming some tune in her head. Ruby was also a huge "chochoholic", Hershey candy bars being her favorite. She asked for her beloved candy bars all the way into Heaven. I just hope there is some Hershey bars in Heaven for her. It didn't matter if she knew you or not, she had a big hug for everyone. Anytime you would be out and about with her, there was always someone coming up and asking how Mom or Miss Ruby was doing. She loved people and she gave the love to everyone who crossed her path.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Rev. James Harold “Jim” Mayes Jr., 76, of Wamego, Kansas, was called home to the Lord Monday (September 9, 2024) at his home in Wamego.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Born May 17, 1948 in Pittsburg, Kansas, Jim was the son of James Harold and Nola (Mundt) Mayes Sr. He married Becky Jo Crane on April 14, 1973 in Pagedale (St.Louis), Missouri. She survives.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;Jim was a graduate of Shawnee Mission North High School, Mission, KS, and St. John Lutheran College in Winfield, KS. He earned his Bachelors Degree from Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, IN, and his Masters of Divinity Degree at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO. Pastor Jim was called to serve St. John Lutheran Church in Rushmore, MN, Abiding Faith Lutheran Church in Peculiar, MO and Grace Lutheran Church in Wichita, KS. In 1998, Pastor Jim was called to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Wamego where he served until his retirement in 2014.

&nbsp; Jim’s faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ and his love for the Lord was reflected in his preaching, teaching and relationships with family, friends and parishioners. Jim was an avid K. U. Basketball fan . He arranged his schedule each year to watch as many March Madness games as possible.. He enjoyed listening to music (classical and the 60’s era), reading (historical and romance novels), playing cards, growing Bonsai Trees and backyard bird watching. He was a World War II historian. He loved and was loved by his two dogs. Their companionship brought warmth and comfort especially during the last difficult year.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Becky; two sons, Aaron James Mayes (Ashley) of Wichita, KS and David Jeremy Mayes of Kenmore, WA; five grandchildren, Abbie Hall, Ayden Mayes, Emalie Hall, Deliza Mayes and Bowen Mayes; a brother, Rev. Theodore Mayes (Joeline) of Fort Wayne, IN; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Reverend James H. Mayes Jr.

&nbsp; It is with deep sadness that the family of Sandra Lynn Krest announces her passing on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at her home and in the company of loved ones, in St. George, Kansas. &nbsp;

&nbsp; Sandra was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on April 11, 1946, to Marcus and Edith (Prentice) Krest. &nbsp;She attended and graduated Coventry High School in Coventry, Connecticut, in 1964. &nbsp;Sandra received her associate's degree from Manchester Community College and her License Practical Nursing certification, which laid the groundwork for an impactful career in nursing.&nbsp;

&nbsp; In addition to nursing in a hospital setting, at Windham Memorial Hospital in Willimantic, Connecticut, Sandra spent a full career working as a nurse for and retiring from the State of Connecticut. &nbsp;She cared for institutionalized individuals with developmental special needs in her capacity as a nurse at the Mansfield Training School and later transferred to the Connecticut Department of Corrections Women’s Prison in Niantic. &nbsp;She spent many years as a union representative for Local 1199. &nbsp;Sandra (semi)-retired in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1994, where she continued to work as a nurse for more than 20 years through home healthcare agencies.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Sandra raised her three children in Coventry, Connecticut where she was very active within the community. &nbsp;Among other things, she served on the Town Council and as Den Leader for Boy Scouts Troop 65 for a number of years. &nbsp;She and her family were members of the Nathan Hale Fife &amp; Drum Corps, traveling and performing in parades and musters throughout the eastern states.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Sandra expressed her colorful personality through creativity, art and vivid story-telling. &nbsp;She enjoyed genealogy, seafood, and Neil Diamond. &nbsp;She loved to be near the water, especially spending time at the beach; often spending all day with her children and friends grilling lunch and dinner. &nbsp;Some of her favorite travels included Amsterdam, London, Paris, and the Florida Keys; making cherished friends along the way.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Sandra is survived by her children, Amy Marrotte, Leslie Marrotte Musinski (Louis), and Michael Marrotte (Suzanne Luhrs); grandchildren Anthony (Melissa), Zane, Samuel (Lauren), Alexis (Marcus), Joseph (Madison), Benjamin, Dylan, Valerie, and Juliette; great-grandchildren Phillip, Merritt, Rutherford, Marley, and Marcus; brother Craig Krest and sister Wendy Hansen (Floyd “Bud”); cousin (like a sister) Peggy Ward; and deeply cherished nieces, nephews and close friends. &nbsp;She developed a close bond with her hospice team, specifically Heather, Rosalyn “Rosie,” and Rebecca, whom she was grateful for and considered family.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Sandra was predeceased by her parents; treasured stepmother, Orissa (Lee) Krest; sister, Linda (Krest) Harper and brother-in-law, Lester Harper; sister-in-law Esther (Yoksa) Krest; first husband, Anthony Marrotte; second husband, Lawrence Ranney; and son-in-law, David Dubiel; all of whom she held a special place in her heart.&nbsp;

&nbsp; It is with deep sadness that the family of Sandra Lynn Krest announces her passing on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at her home and in the company of loved ones, in St. George, Kansas. &nbsp;&nbsp; Sandra was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on April 11, 1946, to Marcus and Edith (Prentice) Krest. &nbsp;She attended and graduated Coventry High School in Coventry, Connecticut, in 1964. &nbsp;Sandra received her associate's degree from Manchester Community College and her License Practical Nursing certification, which laid the groundwork for an impactful career in nursing.&nbsp;&nbsp; In addition to nursing in a hospital setting, at Windham Memorial Hospital in Willimantic, Connecticut, Sandra spent a full career working as a nurse for and retiring from the State of Connecticut. &nbsp;She cared for institutionalized individuals with developmental special needs in her capacity as a nurse at the Mansfield Training School and later transferred to the Connecticut Department of Corrections Women’s Prison in Niantic. &nbsp;She spent many years as a union representative for Local 1199. &nbsp;Sandra (semi)-retired in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1994, where she continued to work as a nurse for more than 20 years through home healthcare agencies.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sandra raised her three children in Coventry, Connecticut where she was very active within the community. &nbsp;Among other things, she served on the Town Council and as Den Leader for Boy Scouts Troop 65 for a number of years. &nbsp;She and her family were members of the Nathan Hale Fife &amp; Drum Corps, traveling and performing in parades and musters throughout the eastern states.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sandra expressed her colorful personality through creativity, art and vivid story-telling. &nbsp;She enjoyed genealogy, seafood, and Neil Diamond. &nbsp;She loved to be near the water, especially spending time at the beach; often spending all day with her children and friends grilling lunch and dinner. &nbsp;Some of her favorite travels included Amsterdam, London, Paris, and the Florida Keys; making cherished friends along the way.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sandra is survived by her children, Amy Marrotte, Leslie Marrotte Musinski (Louis), and Michael Marrotte (Suzanne Luhrs); grandchildren Anthony (Melissa), Zane, Samuel (Lauren), Alexis (Marcus), Joseph (Madison), Benjamin, Dylan, Valerie, and Juliette; great-grandchildren Phillip, Merritt, Rutherford, Marley, and Marcus; brother Craig Krest and sister Wendy Hansen (Floyd “Bud”); cousin (like a sister) Peggy Ward; and deeply cherished nieces, nephews and close friends. &nbsp;She developed a close bond with her hospice team, specifically Heather, Rosalyn “Rosie,” and Rebecca, whom she was grateful for and considered family.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sandra was predeceased by her parents; treasured stepmother, Orissa (Lee) Krest; sister, Linda (Krest) Harper and brother-in-law, Lester Harper; sister-in-law Esther (Yoksa) Krest; first husband, Anthony Marrotte; second husband, Lawrence Ranney; and son-in-law, David Dubiel; all of whom she held a special place in her heart.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sandra is in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego, Kansas. &nbsp;No public service is planned.&nbsp;&nbsp; Any memorial donations may be made to the St. Croix Hospice Foundation, care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. May 20, 1940, in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/local/kansas/abilene">Abilene, Kansas</a>, to Harley and Alice (Shirk) Sexton, was raised in and attended K-12 in Junction City. She worked for Fegan Telephone in Junction City from 1957-1965. On Jun 7, 1959, Marilynn was united in marriage to Donald L Bielefeld at the First Christian Church in Junction City, where she has been a member since being baptized in the early 1950's. After moving to Chapman in 1970, Marilynn enjoyed maintaining the home and raising her two sons with Don. The family created lots of memories camping and boating at Milford Lake nearly every summer weekend, as well as gardening and putting up the bounty of produce. In later years, she and Don had season tickets and enjoyed cheering for KSU Women's Basketball.

Marilynn along with Don were active members of NARFE, Old Trooper, Junction City, Chapter No 0383. Marilynn always enjoyed a friendly card game and playing Scrabble. In 2019, Don and Marilynn moved to Junction City, where they made new friends and transitioned to a slower pace. 

Survivors include husband, Don, Junction City; son, Doug (Michele) Bielefeld, Pomona, KS; son, Todd (Scott Pittman) Bielefeld, Wichita; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and four nieces. Marilynn was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Verleen Byrn.

Visitation will be at Londeen-Overlease Funeral Home in Chapman from 6-8 pm, Tuesday, September 10, and the funeral at the First Christian Church in Junction City at 11 am, Wednesday, September 11. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church of Junction City.

Carlos Chairez was born to Elda on November 11, 1991, in Emporia, Kansas. He passed away on September 1, 2024, in Manhattan, Kansas.

Known for his kind heart, Carlos had a unique ability to strike up conversations with random strangers as if he had known them for years. He had a charming smile and a way of making people feel loved. He enjoyed starting his day with breakfast at his favorite restaurant, The Chef. Carlos cherished living in the moment, as if it were his last day, frequently reminding his loved ones, especially his family, of his deep affection for them and capturing every moment through photographs.

He adopted a fearless approach to life, pursuing hobbies such as bull riding, attending rodeos and mixed martial arts, and supporting his favorite athlete, Conor McGregor. Carlos's love for Boston was evident, and he aspired to live there to be close to his beloved Red Sox. He took immense joy in watching movies and listening to music.&nbsp;

Carlos was a good son, brother, great uncle, and friend. Carlos meant more to his family than he ever understood. He gave his life to the Lord and is now in heaven with his brother Jovany. Carlos will be missed and will live forever in our hearts. We will miss him deeply.

Carlos is survived by his parents, Elda Lopez, sister April, sister Gaby, Family Julie and Christian, Yancey, Elizabeth, and countless other friends and family.

John Harold Taylor (79) was born on February 27th, 1945 in Junction City, Kansas, to Harold and Doris (Shull) Taylor. John grew up in Junction City and graduated from Junction City High School. He graduated from Kansas State University in Economics and later the University of Kansas Law School. John entered into the bar and was initially a prosecutor in Junction City before entering private practice in Junction City and later Manhattan. He finished his law career in Junction City as a Geary County Prosecutor.

John married Dr. Barbara Diane Dempsey, his wife of 45 years, at All Faiths Chapel at Kansas State University in 1979. They had two children: Dustin Taylor (Lindsay) and grandchildren Nora, Finn, and Murphy of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Dr. Matthew Taylor (Elisa) and granddaughter Hazel of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

John is survived by his wife Diane; sons Dusty and Matt; sister Janice Moyer; brother in law Tom Dempsey; grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Marilyn Taylor; brothers in law Joel Dempsey, James Moyer, and Dave Suhling.

John and Diane lived on their farm in the Zeandale area where he juggled his law practice with his love of angus cows, tractors, baling hay (maybe) and horses. His children were active in 4-H which John remained a strong supporter. John was a ham radio operator and learned morse code for his Extra-Class License; his call sign was NMØM. He enjoyed visiting national parks, bringing back fond memories of his summers in college as a Park Ranger at Yellowstone National Park. He and Diane rode mules down to the Grand Canyon Base and stayed at Phantom Ranch on two occasions.

In his retirement, John enjoyed sports, especially attending Kansas State football games, his cattle and beloved dogs Smokey, Daisy, and Roxanne. All of his grandchildren loved spending time with Grandpa and Grandma on the farm.
