Plans are set for the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration

The local Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee has announced the Junction City-Geary County 41st annual Commemoration & Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be Monday, January 19,at 10:00 AM at the C.L. Hoover Opera House.

The theme, “From the Mind and Mouth of Martin!”, honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., highlighting the Motivation, the Ministry, and the Movement. With a youth-centered focus, the event will feature performances and presentations by local youth and serve as a day of learning, reflection, and historical enrichment. 

Local entrepreneur and evangelist Brewel Currie is slated to deliver the keynote address. He founded No More Chains New Life Ministry, a nonprofit devoted to spreading love, hope, and encouragement to incarcerated youth in jails, correctional facilities, and detention centers. Evangelist Currie is also the visionary behind Street Prophets, a ministry that shares its message through outreach and apparel.

The program will include special performances by the Bethel Youth Praise Dance Ensemble of NCOTLG JC; the acclaimed jazz ensemble Michael T. Brown & Friends; and powerful MLK excerpts performed by JCHS students who participate in Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG-K), along with other guests. The event will also feature the presentation of the Coretta Scott King Courage (Humanitarian) Award and additional honors. The JAG-K students will be accepting donations of hats and gloves for school-aged children as well as providing hand-warmers and hot cocoa.

The student-led Community March will conclude the program, which is open to the public free of charge.
