The U.S. Department of Agriculture is ramping up efforts to reach farmers ahead of its upcoming acreage report, following concerns that low survey participation could impact the accuracy of widely watched crop estimates.

USDA officials say they plan to contact more producers and expand survey outreach this season in an effort to improve response rates. The move comes after recent declines in farmer participation raised questions about how well the data reflects actual planting decisions across the country.

The acreage and production reports play a critical role in agricultural markets, helping shape expectations for supplies of major commodities such as corn, soybeans, and wheat. Traders closely monitor the reports, and futures markets often react immediately when new figures are released.

Industry groups and market analysts have increasingly emphasized the importance of farmer participation, noting that stronger response rates lead to more reliable estimates. Accurate data is essential not only for producers making marketing decisions, but also for grain buyers, processors, and exporters planning purchases.

The annual June acreage report is considered one of USDA’s most influential publications. It provides one of the first comprehensive snapshots of final planting decisions following spring seeding, offering a clearer picture of crop supply heading into the growing season.

USDA officials say they hope the expanded outreach effort will encourage more producers to take part, strengthening confidence in the data that underpins key decisions across the agricultural economy.
