UPDATE:

JC Post has learned from county and CVB officials that even though a two percent transient guest tax increase proposal has been discussed at the CVB Advisory Committee level there has not been a motion or vote taken on a recommendation. The matter is scheduled to go to the Geary County Commission on Monday. County commissioners had been informed by staff that the CVB Advisory Committee had made a recommendation supporting the two percent hike. But no final action has been taken.

The Geary County Convention & Visitor's Bureau Advisory Committee recently recommended a two-percent increase in the county's transient guest tax to a total of eight percent. It is currently six percent with the proposal to put one percent of the new money, if approved, toward facilities and one percent toward the CVB.

Donna Price, CVB Director, told the county commission on Tuesday that the sports market has been good for the CVB but without an additional increase they won't be able to go after sports marketing like they have been.

Price indicated that the county commission will study the matter further and look at the topic next week.

Price recently noted that a one cent increase was initially discussed at an earlier county commission meeting with the funds to be used to support upgrades to facilities hosting sporting events. Price suggested splitting that one percent in half to fund both facility upgrades and the CVB.  The matter was then taken to the CVB Advisory Committee, who suggested an overall two percent increase. No final action has been taken at this point.
