Rural firefighters are recognized during a banquet

"Thank you so much for what you do" and "you are a testament to providing good service" were comments of Geary County Commissioners Keith Ascher and Kathy Tremont to Geary County rural firefighters Sunday night. The occasion was the annual dinner for the Rural Fire Department, held at the 4-H / Senior Center.

Lt. Timothy Dokken and Firefighter Galen Hansen were named Firefighters of the Year while Wally Mitchell Was honored as the Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year.

Rural firefighters have responded to 15 more calls in 2025 than one year ago at this time. 

Accomplishments ranged from obtaining $711,000 grant which will help support Grandview Plaza and Milford to outfitting a fire truck purchased in 2024. There was also an extensive amount of firefighter training this year.

Santa Claus made an appearance during the meeting to visit with children.
