
Oscar Werner Kunz, age 82, passed away on Tuesday, February 9,2021, at
Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas. He was born at
home on June 28, 1938, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of John and
Elizabeth Kunz. Oscar grew up in Garden City and graduated from GCHS in
1956.
In August of 1959, he met Verlene Frick. They were married June 12, 1960. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in June 2020.
Oscar worked in service stations and owned two, Phillips 66 at 5 Points
and Kunz Conoco at the corner of Main and Kansas. After the sale of the
Conoco station, he worked various jobs before he began a fifteen year
career with the USPS. His later years were spent owning various rental
properties around Garden City. Oscar also served in the National Guard.
Oscar loved hunting and fishing with friends and family, especially on
his property in Russell County, known as “The Farm.” He was an
accomplished woodworker. Drinking coffee and visiting were also favorite
pastimes. He never knew a stranger.
He is survived by his wife, Verlene, of the home; daughter Kim (John)
Brewer of Garden City, son Karl (Melanie) Kunz of Manhattan, three
grandsons, John Vanatta, Eli Kunz, and AJ Kunz, two nephews, and three
nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marilynne VenJohn,
infant brother and sister Karl and Kathy Kunz, and his nephew Mike
VenJohn.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday February 20, 2021, at
St. James Lutheran Church in Garden City, Kansas with burial to follow
at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday February 19, 2021
from noon to 8:00pm. Masks will be required, the service will be
available via Live Stream on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Page.
