27th annual Junction City Rodeo opens

Posted Jul 17, 2021 3:09 AM

There was a full house big crowd with all bleacher space full and a standing room audience for the first night of the Junction City Rodeo.

Two Rodeo Association members have passed away were honored. R. Bem Bennett, died in December of 2019. He was a longtime Association President and worked with others to start the rodeo in 1993. A sign with his photo will be mounted on the west end of the rodeo arena. During the pre-rodeo festivities the riderless horse ceremony was held in honor of Bennett. That will be repeated ahead of the rodeo Saturday night.

Ben's wife Peggy Bennett noted that he loved rodeo. "He was just a cowboy at heart and he just wanted what was best for the community so they started the rodeo."

Buddy Payne who had just joined the Association in recent months has passed away. He was remembered with a moment of silence.
