Fire destroyed the home belonging to Robert and Tammy Smith at the northwest corner of the K-18 - Sage Road intersection in Dickinson County early Friday morning. According to Paul Froelich Fire Chief for Dickinson County Rural Fire District One, they both the escaped the burning house. Two dogs also escaped but one dog died.
Froelich estimated the damage at approximately $250,000. Cause of the blaze which was reported about 1:30 a.m. is being listed as undetermined due to the hot nature of the fire.
Eight fire trucks from Dickinson County and four from Geary County responded to the scene along with one from Fragrant Hill and one from Sheridan Township.
Froelich noted that the occupants escaped with only the clothing they were wearing. Churches and the Red Cross are providing assistance.
