Geary County Issues Statement Regarding Incorrect Tax Statements

Geary County is issuing an update regarding tax statements that were mailed to residents for the 2024 tax year. According to a release from the county commission it has come to their attention that a miscalculation occurred during the preparation of the statements. That resulted in incorrect figures being reflected on tax bills only in Tax Unit 1, City of Junction City.

"The error was due to a miscalculation in the tax assessment process. Specifically, certain tax rates were not correctly applied to a portion of the tax statements. As a result, the affected residents may see incorrect tax amounts listed on their bills along with the correct amount. We commend the County Clerk and Treasurer’s Office for taking immediate steps to identify the cause of the miscalculation and their work toward correcting the issue. The accountability shown throughout this process is greatly appreciated, as is the commitment to ensuring that residents receive accurate and fair tax statement.

The incorrect tax statements may not reflect the accurate amount owed, and residents are advised not to make payments based on the erroneous figures. We understand that receiving an incorrect statement can be confusing, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. The County Clerk’s Office, in coordination with the Treasurer’s Office, is working diligently to correct the issue. Revised, accurate tax statements will be mailed to affected residents as soon as possible. We anticipate that the updated bills will be sent out no later than May 1st, 2025."
