Citizens concerned about a proposed slaughterhouse project on the southwest side of Junction City have scheduled a public meeting on Saturday, Feb. 26th at 10:45 a.m. at the C.L. Hoover Opera House.
Those in attendance will be able to hear about the social and physical infrastructure impact of a beef harvesting plant / slaughterhouse. According to a flyer released by opponents the facility would create 300 jobs but would result in increased crime, a strain on hospitals, schools and social services, increased traffic and accidents, in certain diseases and COVID, worker injuries, high turnover, PTSD and domestic violence.
One member of the group, Deanna Munson, said the group feels the main thing is to have open communication. Munson also added that they want everyone at the meeting, not just in favor or those opposed to the project. "It's an informative meeting is what the goal is."
In their comments city and county leaders have made it clear that they need to undertake due diligence on the project, and they have not made any final decisions.
