Geary County rural firefighters spent much of the weekend responding to grass fires. It all began on Friday with one large blaze on the Government Hill area covering about 280 acres and another near McDowell Creek approximately 100-130 acres. Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges confirmed that firefighters responded about 10 p.m. Saturday to the Clarks Creek Road area to put out a fire that had rekindled from the Government Hill blaze. There were no injuries to people and no buildings were lost.
Saturday night Geary, Riley and Wabaunsee County all had personnel helping put out a rekindled blaze north of I-70 near mile post 318.
Sunday morning abou 5:30 Geary County rural firefighters went to Eagle Ridge Road in the Milford Township in the K-57 area where a detached shed was fully engulfed in fire. The structure contained chickens and other fowl that were lost. The cause of the fire was attributed to the use of heat lamps and straw. Berges noted that it was the second straight early Sunday morning where that type of case had occurred. One week earlier a similar fire had occurred in a garage near Old Milford Road where four baby chickens were lost.
Conditions are expected to remain windy this week.
