The Blue Jay tennis team competed in the 6A Regional Tennis tournament this past Saturday. The tournament was hosted by Topeka High at the Kossover Tennis Center.
Leading the way for the Blue Jays was Tyson Habhab. He finished in 3rd place earning a berth in the 6A State Tennis Championships. He went 3-1 on the day. In his first round he defeated his Wichita Heights opponent 6-1, 6-2. In the second round he was able to avenge two earlier losses to his Wichita Southeast opponent, by defeating him 6-4, 5-7 and 10-8 in the third set super tiebreaker. He then lost to the top seed before winning his consolation match vs. Washburn Rural as his opponent had to retire due to an injury midway through the match.
In doubles, Cole Goodwin and Matthew Montgomery teamed up and won their first round over the #7 seed from Topeka 6-2, 6-1. They then lost to the eventual regional doubles champions from Washburn Rural. In their last opportunity to qualify for the state tournament, they dropped a close three set match to the #3 seed from Wichita Heights, 6-7, 6-4, 4-6 ending a good tournament run.
Other participants from the Blue Jay tennis team were Migyelle Ganuelas in singles and Aaron Matthews and Vincenzo Bonet in doubles.Overall, Junction City finished in 4th place. Washburn Rural won the regional title.
Tyson Habhab will represent the Blue Jay tennis team at the 6A State Tennis Tournament Friday, May 15th in Wichita. Matches will begin at 10 am and will be held at the Riverside Tennis Complex.
