She was born on a farm north of Wamego, Kansas on March 6, 1926, daughter of Martin A; and Mary “Mamie” Lauer Steinmetz.  She attended Greenwood Country School and graduated from Wamego High School. Marge was working during the war at the Sunflower Ammunition plant when she was encouraged to become a nurse. She was a participant in the United States Cadet Nursing Corp and attended St. Marys nursing program in Leavenworth and at St. Frances Hospital in Topeka where she graduated as a Registered Nurse.  She worked at a hospital in Denver during the Polio outbreak and then at the hospital in Wamego. Later she was the Wabaunsee County Health Nurse in Alma, Kansas for 25 years until she retired in 1990.

Marge enjoyed gardening. She spent many hours quilting and crocheting and made many blankets that she donated to the Wichita Children’s Home.  She especially loved little children and spending time with her family. Marge was an avid and loyal Royals, Chiefs, and anything K-State fan.

Marge married Melvin A. Hansen on April 22, 1954, in Flush, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on August 30, 1996.

Marge is survived by five children; Sharon (David) Goodwin of Wichita, Jerry (Jeri) Hansen of Topeka, Patti (Mike Vernese) Hansen of Perry, Florida, Teresa Hansen of Wichita, and Tom (Marilyn) Hansen of Kansas City; along with 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Marge was also preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Lorestine Schmelzle; and one grandchild.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 12, 2020, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma, Kansas.  Father Mike Peterson will be the Celebrant.  Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in McFarland.  The family will greet friends prior to the service, in the church hall, beginning at 10:00 AM.  They suggest memorial contributions to the Wichita Children’s Home or the Holy Family Catholic Church, and those may be sent in care of Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home in Alma.
