Pat Dunne was born in Manhattan, KS, in March of 1925. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Eddie and Mabel Dunne, and his sister, Marjorie.
Mr. Dunne went through the Manhattan public school system, graduating high school in 1943. He was president of the senior class and, as co-captain of the MHS football team, made all-state honorable mention in the Topeka newspaper.
Volunteering for the Navy during high school, Mr. Dunne qualified for the officer training program (V12) upon graduation. He attended Washburn University for four 18-hour semesters, and then was sent to Harvard University for a five-month midshipman's school. On completion of his training, Mr. Dunne was commissioned as an ensign and sent to sea. He served in the Navy a total of 40 months, twelve in the South Pacific. He was discharged in the spring of 1946, and completed his education at Kansas State University and pharmacy school at Kansas University.
While at KU, he met his future wife, Ann Hogue, a music major and vocalist for Keg Morehead's 10-piece dance band. They married in 1950 in Ann's hometown, Russell, KS. They moved to Manhattan where Mr. Dunne worked at Palace Drug Store downtown until it was destroyed in the '51 flood.
Later that year, Mr. Dunne and his father, Eddie Dunne, founded Dunne's Drug at 112 S. 4th Street. In 1966, Mr. Dunne opened Dunne's Pharmacy at 2429 Claflin Road, where it still exists under different ownership today.
After 40 years as a pharmacist, Mr. Dunne retired and he and Ann spent winters in Arizona, enjoying golf, dancing, shows, coffee groups and books.
Pat Dunne is survived by his wife Ann, his daughter, Karen Dunne Solini of Manhattan; his son Michael Dunne and his wife Diana of Liberty, MO; his son Patrick Dunne and his wife Elia of Coppell, TX; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday November 23, 2019 at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Father Frank Coady as Celebrant. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Vigil Service will follow at 7:00 p.m.
