Geary County rural firefighters responded to a fire near the 3500 block of K-157 highway approximately 12 miles southwest of Junction City early Sunday afternoon. According to Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges more than 80 large hay bales were destroyed. There were no injuries.
Berged noted the blaze occurred as a couple of large bales were being loaded onto a truck. "And the hot exhaust or something on the truck caught some dry straw on fire, which caused the hay bales to then catch on fire.
The bales were owned by Phil Janke. The damage was estimated at about $4,000.
