The Fort Riley Tax Center opens on post Jan. 21 in Building 7034 on Custer Hill. Capt. Peter Strickland said there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony with Garrison Commander Col. Stephen Shrader at 11:30 a.m.
The Center will remain open until April 15th with the hours 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The final walk-in's are asked to arrive no later than 5 p.m.
Strickland said Soldiers can make an appointment or walk in. The service is available to active duty Soldiers, reserve component Soldiers that are on active duty orders for more than 30 days, retirees and dependents in all three of those categories.
Strickland said, "Well be able to file your federal and state income tax returns. We're a little limited by the regulations and by what the IRS does and doesn't want us to do. We can do anything up to two rental properties, and we can go back two years prior to do the tax forms if there were any years that you missed the past couple of years."
Officials at the Center can provide tax advice. "We have one cpa and two attorneys on staff at the tax center so we're able to offer a little bit of advice there. Also the software that we use helps us to be able look at options and compare different credits and different exemptions and different ways to file. That way we can maximize returns."
The cost for the service is free.
