Education was in the spotlight at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration in Junction City on Monday.
The keynote speaker Dr. Reginald Eggleston told the audience at the C.L. Hoover Opera House that very few adults are willing to volunteer to serve children. Young people need to hear their voice and adults can help them learn common sense.
Eggleston noted that education is taken lightly in this country. But in the economic development arena he believes that education is the strongest contributor that will exist. "A school system is the heartbeat of a community." Eggleston encouraged young people to take advantage of their educational opportunities. "Everyone has a right to be educated. Everyone should take advantage of it."
The superintendent stated that we are all responsible for ensuring that children receive an education. "Intelligence plus character is the goal of a true education."
In addition to Eggleston, representatives from Cloud County Community College and Kansas State University spoke during the celebration.
