Lloyd K. Verhage, age 81, of Manhattan, died January 21, 2020, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.
He was born December 16, 1938, in Jewell County, Kansas, the son of Martin J. and Marcial (Lessenden) Verhage.
Lloyd graduated from Jewell County High School, earned an associate degree in San Marcos, CA, and then a master’s from Kansas State University in Civil Engineering and Human Resources.
He served for 32 years in the United States Navy and retired in 1987 at the rank of Lt. Commander. He had received the Good Conduct Medal (4, Navy Unit Commendation (2, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal ( 5 awards with One Silver Star, Navy Achievement Medal (W/”V”, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Navy Commendation Medal (3, Sea Service Deployment Award, and was initiated into the Loyal and Trusty Order of Shellbacks.
Lloyd was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan, a Life Member of the DAV, and was very proud of his military service.
On June 17, 1959, in Hays, Kansas, he was married to Erma L. Walters. Mrs. Verhage preceded him in death on November 16, 2015. He was also preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers: Richard and Merrill.
Survivors include his three children: Lloyd Paul Verhage of Wilder, Idaho, Gabriel Michael Verhage of Perris, CA, and Mary Kathrine Riley and her husband Terrance of Orinda, CA; three grandchildren; two sisters: Lucille Webber of Hutchinson, KS, and Maryann Henderson of Talala, OK; and three brothers: Carol Verhage of Geneva, NE, Wendell Verhage of Hastings, NE, and John Verhage of Oklahoma City, OK.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 10th, at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2900 Kimball Avenue, Manhattan, with Father Frank Coady as Celebrant. Inurnment services with military honors will at 1:00 P.M. Monday, February 10th, at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley.
