On Friday due to the outbreak of Covid-19 at the Geary County Detention Center, testing of the staff and inmates was conducted. Emergency Management Director Garry Berges said as a result of the testing, three new cases were identified. This brings the count to five total for the Detention Center.

Two were identified as inmates and one was a Correctional Officer. The Detention Officers are isolated at their residence and the inmates are isolated away from the other inmates as they recover.

The Geary County Health Department continues to work with those who tested positive. They are doing contact tracing to track where the individuals have been and whom they were in contact with.

Arrangements are being made to retest all of the Detention personnel and inmates later on this week, as the Health Department and KDHE work together to identify and stop the spread of the virus.

Additional personal protective supplies were requested and received from the State EOC on Friday. These supplies are for the Detention Officer and the inmates.

So far since the coronavirus pandemic began there have been 29 confirmed positive cases in Geary County.

The public is encouraged to follow the recommendations of social distancing, wearing of face masks, and washing of hands as we attempt to stop the spread of Covid-19.
