The Sundown Salute celebration was cancelled some time ago for 2020 due to COVID-19, but organizers left open the possibility they still might be able to have the parade that normally occurs on July 4. But on Thursday Michelle Stimatze, Geary County Convention and Visitor's Bureau Director, confirmed she had talked with Sundown Salute board members and that the parade will not be held this year. "We decided not to pursue the parade this year. "
Because of COVID-19 Stimatze explained that it's too much of a risk for the community as far as social distancing, adding that's it's really hard to have a parade and have everyone enjoy it.
Right now the mass gathering limit is 50 people for events, and it's unknown what that limit might be by July 4. "We really need to flatten the curve. We've done so well in the community not having so many people that's been involved with the COVID. I hate to see things keep increasing."
The plan is for the parade to return for the 2021 Sundown Salute celebration.
