John Stanford "Stan" Lips

Stan was born in Wichita, KS on August 11, 1938 to John Henry Lips, Jr. and Iris Christina (Olson) Lips Crawford. He was 82 years old. He passed away April 11, 2021, at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan, KS, at the age of 82.

He moved with his family to Coffeyville, KS where he attended Coffeyville Grade School, graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1956. During this time, he was awarded the FFA State Farmer Degree. Stan studied Animal Husbandry at Kansas State University where he met Martha Jane “Marty” Diepenbrock. They were married on September 20, 1959 in Topeka, KS. Together they farmed and raised their family near Bartlett, KS. The couple moved to Manhattan, KS in the spring of 2019. They were married 61 years.

Stan loved farming from the time he was a small child. He and Marty owned his family’s century farm, farming and raising cattle for most of Stan’s life. Stan served on several community boards. Most importantly, he served on the USD #506 School Board, helped organize Rural Water District No. 8, served as president of Labette County Farm Bureau and was on the Bartlett Co-op board. Stan was a member of the Bartlett Christian Church.

Stan was a mentor and friend to Brent Mathes of Bartlett, KS. He appreciated and loved Brent as his son. They farmed and worked together for many years. He loved knowing that Brent continues his farming legacy.

Woodworking was a hobby Stan enjoyed. He made many pieces of furniture for family and friends. He loved to read and never passed up a good museum. He took great pleasure attending his daughters’ and grandchildren’s activities. Stan loved spending time with his family in his quiet and kind way.

Stan is survived by his wife, Marty, his three daughters, Lori (Mark) Schramm of The Colony, TX, Jan (Marshall) Streeter of Cheyenne, WY and Amy (Mack) Terrapin of Alma, KS, his brother, Fred Lips of Riley, KS, his step-sister, Sharon (Crawford) Brown of Prairie Village, KS, six grandchildren, Brooke (Phill) Wilson, Layne (Alex) Miles, Nick Terrapin, Alli Terrapin, Claire Streeter and Lauren Streeter and four great-grandchildren, Reid and Blaire Wilson, and Henry and Kate Miles.

Cremation is planned with a Celebration of his Life to be held at a later date. Private family inurnment will be in the Lake Creek Cemetery.
