RCPD: Manhattan apartment fire intentionally set

MANHATTAN— Authorities investigating the cause of a fire in an apartment in Manhattan have filed a report for aggravated arson and criminal damage to property

Just before 4:30 a.m. Thursday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 2215 College Avenue building Q for a report of a structure fire, according to Assistant Chief Sam Dameron.

Upon arrival, crews found a three-story apartment building with smoke coming from the second floor.

The fire was controlled by the sprinkler system and crews finished the extinguishment. No one was home in the apartment at the time of the fire however, one cat was found deceased due to smoke inhalation.

 According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 35-year-old man is considered a suspect after it was reported the fire started inside an apartment.

The total estimated loss has been increased to $10,000 to the structure and $1,000 to contents according to the Manhattan Fire Department (MFD).
