There are plans to replace the US-40 ( East 6th viaduct ) bridge in 2022. Junction City manager Allen Dinkel said the city commission has agreed to work with KDOT on the project. "It is a city street but also a highway that KDOT has through here. They're going to be replacing the bridge next year at all their cost. " There will not be any cost for the city with the exception of some beautification work with lighting.

Dinkel expects the project to be bid out in the spring and the work to be undertaken beginning in the summer.  Detours will involve use of the exit 296 off I-70 at South Washington Street. Inside the city he anticipates motorists will use streets near the bridge site such as 8th Street and East Chestnut.  The bridge lies on a direct route between Junction City and Grandview Plaza so detours will have to be utilized.
