Geary County Rural Firefighters have responded to 57 fires year to date, compared to 43 at this time one year ago.&nbsp;

Rural Fire Chif Garry Berges said there were 19 calls in April and 12 were grass or wildland fires.On April 14 there were three large grass fires on Konza Prairie property.

A total of 1,446 acres burned but no Konza experiments were damaged.

--New air packs for the department are due to be shipped within a week.

--Four new volunteers have been added to the firefighter staff.

Berges updated county commissioners this week.
