There was concern early in  the coronavirus pandemic about the impact it would have on sales tax revenue in Junction City. But City Manager Allen Dinkel said this week that beginning in June sales tax revenues have been unbelievable. "Which would have been April sales, we were worried about COVID. In June we had the second highest month ever in local sales tax and it was 21 percent higher than last year. July was up 12 percent from last year."

DInkel noted the compensating use tax from internet sales was at an all-time high. For the month of August the sales tax revenue which reflected June sales, there was a 20 percent increase and the compensating use tax was at a record all-time high. "We've had our four highest months of sales tax ( revenue ) all this year."

The tax revenue is collected by  the State and then later distributed to individual cities and counties.

Dinkel thinks one reason for the increase in Junction City is that residents are shopping at home. "Number two the internet sales are going up because maybe the internet stuff that I or anybodye else was driving to Manhattan, Topeka or Salina for, because of COVID we're now buying it online instead."
