Geary County Sheriff's Department passes on a scam alert

Posted Feb 16, 2024 8:45 PM

The Geary County Sheriff's Office has received notice from another Kansas Law Enforcement Agency involving offenders who must register through the Kansas Offender Registration Act.

An offender in another Kansas jurisdiction reported being called by an individual about missing an appointment for a DNA swab and a warrant had been issued. The person claimed to be an officer with the agency and told the offender if he didn't pay $3,000 he would be arrested. The offender told the man he could only pay $2,000 and the man agreed. The offender became suspicious and told the man he was going to contact a local law enforcement agency.

Later the same day a second attempt was made by someone using the same phone number. Again, please take notice, a Law Enforcement Officer will never attempt to collect money from you for a warrant.
