Geary County Commissioners heard a monthly update from Geary County Emergency Management Director and Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges on Monday.

Berges reported to commissioners that the Rural Fire Department responded to a total of nine calls during the month of June.

Year-to-date, Geary County Rural Fire has responded to 79 calls (from January through the end of June). During this same time frame last year, Rural Fire had responded to 67 calls.

-- Commissioners learned that the Emergency Management Office and the Rural Fire Department were also busy during the Freedom Fest celebration over the Fourth of July holiday. Garry Berges noted that every morning of Freedom Fest, his office was briefed by the National Weather Service and relayed that information onto the Freedom Fest organizers.

Also over the Fourth of July weekend, Rural Fire responded to one fireworks fire call out on Spring Valley Road. Rural fire estimates that possibly 3-4 acres burned from the fire.
