Beginning Monday, July 10, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin the first of three phases for a pavement replacement project on I-70 at Junction City in Geary County. The project includes replacing pavement for about four miles of I-70 between Washington Street at exit 296 and K-57 at exit 300.
During the first part of phase one, traffic on eastbound I-70 will be reduced to one lane at a reduced speed as the roadway receives a temporary overlay.
During the second part of phase one, about a mile of eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane as median crossovers will carry westbound traffic through construction in a head-to-head configuration via the eastbound lanes.
Ramps will be closed at times to allow for reconstruction of the ramp pavement. Local traffic will be directed to use alternate routes.
Wildcat Construction Co. Inc. and Subsidiaries, of Wichita, is the prime contractor and has scheduled phase one of this $30 million project to be completed by December 2023. All three phases of the project to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting.
