Conversations have begun with the USD 475 Board of Education on the possibility of relocating the Alternative School out of the H.D. Karns Building. Superintendent Dr. Reginald Eggleston noted that is due to the age and amount of work  that needs to be done to it.

"We're looking at the Larry Dixon Center as an ouption for that. The T and L Department has gone through, done a walk-through to make sure the facility can handle the number of students that we're looking at housing in that building." No final decisions have been made.

Eggleston confirmed if the move were made the initial plan would be to put the H.D. Karns Building up for sale for 90 days but if there were no takers it would be demolished. "Of course any time that you get ready to put a facility on the market you have to follow the state statute." That means it would have to go the State Board of Education, go through the approval process there and be returned to the District for action.

The facility at one time served as the Junction City High School and later as the Junction City Middle School. Eggleston said he was not aware of any pushback at this time and that was the reason for taking it to the Board now to see if there would be any concerns about making that move.
