The annual event where duc tape and cardboard are used to make boats for the Float Your Boat races could be moved to an earlier date next year. This year the event is scheduled on Saturday, Aug.20th at the South Boat Ramp at Milford State Park. But in many years blue green algae late in the summer can cause problems for the event.
Now Geary County Convention & Visitors Bureau Director Donna Price is thinking about the late spring - early summer June time frame for the event in order to avoid blue green algae issues. "Because it will be cooler and we won't have the issues that seem to creep up this time of year."
As far as this year is concerned the water will be tested the morning of the event to determine if there are blue green algae issues. If there are, other possibilities mentioned as back up locations for Float Your Boat include the Corp of Engineers area on the south side of the lake and after that possibly the Rock Springs 4-H Center swimming pool.
