Ada Belle Herbic

Ada Belle Herbic, 80, of Alma, Kansas, died Friday, September 25, 2020, at her home.  She was a life-long resident of the area.

Belle was born on September 19, 1940, in rural Paxico, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Ella Martens Mathies.  She attended local schools and graduated in 1959 from Paxico High School.

For twenty years, Belle owned and operated Herbic Liquor Store in Alma.  She also owned, for several years, the Alma Bakery.  In her earlier years, she had worked at Alma Cheese, Flint Hills Foods, and the Knotty Pine Cafe.

Belle was an exceptional quilter.  She also loved to cook and was known for her pies, and enjoyed making Halloween costumes.

Belle married Vernon Charles Herbic on April 26, 1963, in McFarland in a double wedding with her twin sister, Nelle.  He preceded her in death on October 23, 2014.

Belle is survived by her son, Darrin Herbic, of Alma; her sisters, Mary Ashworth, Wamego and Nyla Mathies, Manhattan; her sisters-in-law, Jean Mathies, Joyce Mathies, and brother-in-law, Bob Meseke, all of Alma; and numerous nieces and nephews and many honorary adopted family and friends.  She was also preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings, Leon Mathies, Lola Ringel, Agnes Ringel, Fred Mathies, Mavis Erikson, Donald Mathies, Doris Mathies, and Nelle Meseke.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2020, at Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland.  Reverend Chris Vossler will be officiating.  Inurnment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.  The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 9:30 a.m.  They suggest memorial contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church or St. John Lutheran School, and those may be sent in care of Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home in Alma.
