ANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a career-best performance last week at Colorado, Kansas State punter Simon McClannan has been named to the Ray’s 8 list as one of the best eight punters of the week, the Ray Guy Award announced on Monday.
McClannan is now in the running for being named the Ray Guy Punter of the Week, which will be announced on Tuesday. It is the third time in his career and second time this season that McClannan has been named to the Ray’s 8 list. He was named to the list earlier this season after the Tulane game, while he went on to earn Ray Guy Punter of the Week honors after last season’s UCF game.
McClannan, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, set a new career high with a 53.67-yard average at Colorado, which was the third-best average in school history, the fourth-best mark nationally this season and the best in the Big 12. Of his six punts, five traveled at least 50 yards – the most by a Big 12 punter this season – while the Buffaloes began drives inside their own 20-yard line on two occasions after McClannan’s punts.
His performance at Colorado pushed McClannan into the top five nationally with a 48.40-yard average this season, which is currently the top mark in school history by over three yards per punt. He also leads the Big 12 with 16 punts of 50 or more yards and ranks second in the league with 15 punts that have landed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. Additionally, McClannan’s career average of 43.86 yards per punt ranks second in program history.
