Emporia outscored Junction City 46-34 in the second half and pulled away to a 74-62 victory over the Blue Jays in boys basketball Tuesday night. The win was only  the third of the season for the Spartans ( 3-14 ) while Junction City fell to 11-7.

The game had been tied 28-28 at halftime but the Spartans controlled the second half, Blue Jay coach Nick Perez said the game reached the point where they were pressing a little bit. "We're jacking some stuff. Beau ( Welch ) does a good job here in Emporia. We just didn't make plays.

The Blue Jays battled foul problems during the contest and ended up with two starters fouling out of the game. "I thought our kids did a good job. They were real resilient. They had some things go against them in the first half, said Perez.

In the girls contest Emporia led start to finish and defeated the Lady Jays 63-19. There was a running clock in the fourth quarter.

Junction City teams play at Highland Park on Friday.
