RCPD Announces Future Departure of Director Peete

MANHATTAN, KAN. – The Riley County Police Department announces Director Brian Peete has begun the process of renegotiating his contract with the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency Law Board with the intent of concluding his service to the agency by Dec. 31, 2026.

Director Peete has led RCPD for more than three years, guiding the organization through periods of significant transition, operational challenges, and evolving community needs. During his tenure, he helped strengthen relationships across the region, supported major modernization and technological efforts within the agency – including license plate readers and VR training tools – while championing a culture centered on accountability, service, and collaboration.

Peete was introduced as the sixth director of RCPD on Dec. 30, 2022. Under Peete’s direction, the department advanced key initiatives, expanded community‑focused engagement, and continued its longstanding mission of ensuring public safety with professionalism and integrity. Other key achievements included:

• Restored staffing stability, including full Corrections Division staffing in six months and department‑wide levels above 85 percent

• Achieved CALEA accreditation for RCPD Communication Center, enhancing emergency communications service quality

• Created the Community Outreach Division with 83 engagements and reaching an estimated 21,000 residents in 2025

• Established the Real-Time Intelligence Crime Center with more than 150 positive case outcomes

• Introduced strict budgeting practices, identifying more than $1.8 million in internal reallocations for FY 2025–27

• Assumed countywide Animal Control responsibilities and integrated staff into RCPD operations

•Created a Reintegration Coordinator position in the Corrections Division to help reduce recidivism

• Led successful grant efforts to fund a multi-agency communication platform in partnership with the Homeless Services Providers Task Force

• Secured multiple grants, including approximately $20,000 for de-escalation and officer-safety training, and another $10,000 for regional sex trafficking and dark web investigations training

Director Peete will work with agency leadership to support a smooth and orderly transition while maintaining the high standards expected by the Riley County community.
