An agricultural coalition is urging the Trump administration to exempt products covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement from new tariffs imposed on Canadian goods.
The Ag Coalition for USMCA said the new 50% duties on approximately $20 billion in Canadian products could disrupt agricultural trade as negotiations between the United States and Canada continue.
Coalition spokesperson Brian Goodman said the organization supports efforts to resolve individual trade disputes but believes products covered by the USMCA should remain protected from additional tariffs.
The coalition said predictable access to Canadian and Mexican markets is particularly important for American farmers, ranchers and food companies. It warned that new trade barriers could disrupt established supply chains and create additional uncertainty for agricultural producers.
The group is also calling for the USMCA to be renewed with targeted improvements addressing specific trade concerns without disrupting existing markets.
The Ag Coalition for USMCA represents businesses and organizations across the U.S. food and agricultural supply chains.
