On Thursday at approximately 7:39 p.m., officers with the Grandview Plaza Police Department initiated a vehicle pursuit near Cracker Barrel in Junction City. Officers from the Junction City Police Department and the Geary County Sheriff’s Office assisted by deploying tire deflation devices in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle.
At approximately 7:54 p.m., the driver abandoned the vehicle near Rucker Road and Fort Avenue and fled on foot into a tree line south of Rucker Road. When officers attempted to deploy a Taser, the individual produced a handgun and shot himself. Officers immediately began providing medical aid and requested Junction City Fire/EMS.
The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. Detectives and Crime Scene personnel from the Junction City/Geary County Major Case Unit responded and are conducting a joint investigation into this incident. No officers or bystanders were injured. No officers discharged their firearms during this incident.
