Public Information Officer -- Junction City
The City of Junction City has been notified that its application for the Westbound Grant Avenue Bridge Replacement project has been officially shortlisted by the Kansas Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) for potential federal funding.
The project, which focuses on the Grant Avenue Bridge providing egress from Fort Riley, has advanced beyond the competitive application phase and will now undergo further evaluation of scope, cost, and scheduling before a final funding decision is made, which is anticipated in winter 2026.
This critical infrastructure project aims to address deterioration of the bridge deck and joints, which could otherwise lead to load restrictions by 2030 and potential closure by 2033 if left unaddressed. The bridge currently serves more than 18,000 daily users and is a vital connection supporting economic activity and access to recreational areas associated with Fort Riley.
The proposed scope of work includes:
● Replacement of the existing concrete bridge deck, approach slabs, rails, abutment backwalls/wingwalls and expansion joints
-Removal and reset bearings at abutments
● Installation of a polymer overlay system to extend the bridge’s lifespan
The Federal Lands Access Program has tentatively identified $3 million in funding for the project. Current total cost estimates range between $6 million and $6.5 million, and the City is continuing efforts to secure additional funding to fully support the project scope.
If approved, the project is preliminarily scheduled for construction funding in fiscal year 2030, though timelines may shift based on federal program funding and legislative updates.
City officials emphasize the importance of this project in maintaining safe and reliable infrastructure while supporting continued access to Fort Riley and strengthening regional connectivity.
