Preparing for the spring burning season

Posted Feb 16, 2024 4:21 PM

Farm producers and ranchers had an opportunity this week to get a refresher on outdoor burning procedures and requirements in Geary County.

Garry Berges, Geary County Rural Fire Chief, said before burning call his office at 785-238-1290 to get approval. There could have to be delays if the  winds are or are predicted to be 20 mph or more, and depending on the humidity level.

You must stay with a fire to maintain and monitor it.

Burning can be done any time of the year but the primary time for grassland burning has typically been mid-March through the month of April. Brush piles cannot be burned in April.

Berges indicated that there may be many fires this year but they won't be as severe as last year due to moisture received this winter.

Burning rules and regulations were covered during a session hosted by KSU Extension.
