Fort Riley sets aside a fall Saturday in September each year for an open house and apple day celebration. This year it will be on Sept. 24. Admission is free from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at both the Artillery and Cavalry Parade Fields.
Ron Stewart, Coordinator for the event, said this will be the 36th apple day event on Post. "Some of the events will include the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard, weapons firing, static displays and of course live entertainment."
There will be military police working dog demonstration, an opportunity for robotics, along with the Meet Your Army Campaign to try and attract individuals 18-25 to join the military. "We're going to allow them to use our simulators. That's a tank simulator and that's our aviation simulator, said Stewart. "How the catch is that will have to go through our recruiters to use that."
The Family Readiness Group will sell 14 separate food items for the public to choose from. They will have apple menus plus food items such as hot dogs and hamburgers. There wlll be traditional apple pie sales by the Historical and Archaeological Society featuring pies made using Libby Custer's recipe.
